Pepper’s Puppy Pawty: Creative 2nd Birthday Party Ideas!
How to host a puppy themed birthday paw-ty for your dog-loving child with a punny invitation, pup-tastic decor, and a creative “adopt a puppy” activity fun for all ages!
Party Theme
They say that little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. But some little girls are made of puppy dog tails, too. Some little girls like our daughter, Pepper!
Truly, nothing makes Pepper pant with excitement more than puppies.
Though we don’t have a dog ourselves, she has befriended every dog in our neighborhood. And one of her Christmas gifts from us this year was a dog garden statue that she loves to kiss and sit on!
So naturally, while searching online for 2nd birthday theme ideas, “a puppy paw-ty” pounced on me as the perfect theme for our dog-loving girl! Plus, it involved a pun, which you all know I’m a sucker for.
I’m excited to share some photos and anecdotes with you all from Pepper’s 2nd Birthday Party to bring you a smile and perhaps inspire your own “Puppy Pawty!” It’s a pup-tacular theme!
*I’ve included affiliate links for your convenience. I’ve also complied an Amazon storefront with a handy collection of all the party supplies we purchased, which you can peruse HERE.
Invitation
We opted for a small family gathering at my in-laws’ home, and I whipped up an Evite, using this fun “Come, Sit, Stay” design.
Then, in the party details section, I crammed in as many dog puns as possible to bring some smiles (and a few groans). A few of them are “ruff” but I think some have pet-tential! {Wink.}
How many puns can you count?
Calling all Pawty Animals!
Pounce on over to Mom & Dad’s house for a birthday pawty in celebration of Pepper turning 2. Our little pup is growing up!
Fun-tivities for the kids begin at 9:45 a.m. and we’ll paws for brunch at 10:30 a.m. After chow time, there will be more fun-tivities. And be sure to save room for Betty Cakes!
Kindly woof your “ARF”-SVP.
Looking forward to a dog-gone good time with our beloved family!
My pun count is 9! Who can help get me to 10? Yelp at me in the comments with your ideas!
Puppy Party Dress
First things first, I needed to make sure our paw-ty girl would have a dress fitting for the occasion. While I spied a few cute dog dresses on Amazon (you can see them HERE), the winner was from a small shop called Mila & Rose that I was delighted to support!
It’s their “Dog Days Pocket Twirl Dress”, and it shipped just as fast as Amazon, but with the quality and attention to detail of a small, family-owned business!
I mean those pockets? The scoop back? The twirly-skirt? That puppy print? It was paw-fect! They also have a romper, skirt, and tutu version with the same adorable print!
You can see why I was like the pup-arazzi and snapped a million photos of Pepper rocking it in the driveway before our guests arrived. I think she looks quite fetching!
And those “walking dog balloons” were Amazon finds and are truly an act of creative genius. Pepper was mutts about them!
It’s so fun imagining what’s going through a two-year-old’s mind….
“Okay, I told you to play dead…not to take an actual snooze.”
She’s all about that pug life.
A dog is a girl’s best friend!
“Adopt a Puppy” Activity
One of the challenges of planning this party was coming up with activities that would be fun for everyone: from a just-turned-two-year-old to her oldest cousin Cora at 13!
Challenge accepted.
I give to you, the “Adopt a Puppy” Party Activity, which was a big win all around!
And I must give credit where credit is due. When I found this amazing printable package by Kasey from PaintedWhiteLines on Etsy, this activity pretty much planned itself.
The printable with the step-by-step process for “How to Adopt a Puppy” inspired the pathway of stations I created for the kids to journey through together. And Kasey included everything I needed to help make the puppy adoption process official–from table signs to certificates to exam forms–there were more printables included than I even ended up using. It was well worth the $15!
And Kasey was so quick to respond when I reached out with a question and even gave me a complimentary printable when I needed her troubleshooting help to open one of the files. I highly recommend visiting her shop to check out her “Adopt a Puppy” Printables. She also has versions in purple, teal, and blue, as well as Kitty Cat party editions, too.
I set up our first station below our festive “Let’s Pawty” balloons and birthday banner. And I insisted on a cousins photo before we kicked things off!
Step 1: Pick Your Puppy
After I gave the kids a quick run-down of the steps, they dove into the first step and perhaps the most exciting: picking out which puppy to adopt!
I had a line-up of cute stuffed animal puppies in dog carriers for the kids to choose from, and we went youngest to oldest as each one selected the puppy that was most pulling their heartstrings.
Here’s a link to my Amazon storefront where you can find the stuffed animal puppies and cardboard carriers I purchased. I just used a cup to draw a circle for an opening on the side, which I cut out using an x-acto knife.
Once everyone had their puppy in tow, we journeyed to the next station!
Step 2: Make a Collar
First, I had the kids come up with a name for their puppy, and then, they were tasked with creating a dog collar with their puppy’s name on it.
At the table, I had all the supplies they needed to create their dog collars: pipe cleaners, letter beads, perler beads, and scissors. And Fluffy’s example collar.
I thought their names were so cute and clever. Here’s what they came up with:
- Cora named her puppy Scout
- Reagan named her puppy Carmel
- Grant named his puppy Rex
- Juniper named her puppy Pretty
- Pepper named her puppy Hhhhh (the panting sound a doggy names…adorable, no?)
Now, I expected we’d need “all paws on deck” to help Pepper make her collar, but to everyone’s astonishment, we learned that she’s a beading prodigy! She put on her concentrated face and carefully strung each bead onto her pipe cleaner with the confidence of a kid twice her age. Go Pepper!
A snapshot of the completed collars. “Someone” was not feelin’ this photo. Can you guess who?
Step 3: Give Your Pet a Check-Up
Once our newly-named puppies had their collars on, they headed over to the Pet Rescue Vet Clinic for a check-up.
There, they each got an exam form to fill out with their pet’s vital signs, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.
I brought our Doc McStuffins Pet Rescue Mobile Vet Station from home along with our doctor bag toys that the kids used when giving their puppies check-ups. It was really sweet to them all taking this part very seriously.
And Grant was seriously funny when filling out his form. We all chuckled to learn that his puppy Rex had a temperature of 50,000 degrees and a heart-rate of 50,000 beats per minute and that his respirations were “awful.”
Good thing poor Rex had Grant taking care of him and prescribing all of the treatment options. Tee hee.
Step 4: Decorate a House
Next, it was time to decorate their cardboard puppy carrier and make it a proper dog-house. Or should I say, “raise the woof!”
I showed the kids an example with my puppy Fluffy’s carrier that I had decorated in advance…
…and then set them loose with a table full of supplies with which to go to town: markers, crayons, kwik stix, alpha stickers, puppy stickers, and assorted puffy stickers.
I loved seeing how each kid put their own personal spin on their design. Pepper was “mutts” about the puppy stickers…
…Reagan made sure to give Carmel a room with a view…
…and Grant posted some “beware of the dog” signs because while Rex may look soft n’ sweet, we learned he has a ferocious side. But who can blame him when he runs such a high fever all the time? Ha!
I think the puppies look quite pawsh all lined up with their collars and newly decorated houses, don’t you?
Step 5: Get Your Certificate
The last step in the Puppy Adoption process was for our new pup-parents to receive a certificate of adoption as a sign of their commitment to love their fur-babies fur-ever!
Each certificate included fun details like the dog’s favorite food and birthday, which I quizzed the kids on and filled out for them. Then, I handed over the pen for them to sign and make it official.
Brunch
After our puppy adoption activity, we were all ready to dig in to some yummy brunch that my mother-in-love Rachael prepared. She laid out a spread with egg casserole, roasted potatoes, mini muffins, and fruit. Chow time!
I saw this funny idea at other puppy parties and couldn’t resist serving “toilet water” as our brunch beverage. How apropos, no?
Despite how unappetizing it sounds, it actually tasted wonderful and was easy to whip up with just two ingredients: 1 part blue Hawaiian punch to 1 part Sprite.
And I made a little sign in PicMonkey using ClipArt.
Table Decor
I decorated our brunch table with a white tablecloth and burlap table-runner, and for the centerpiece I nabbed the paw-print dog food mat and extra large tennis balls from Dollar Tree.
But the paw-fect focal point for the centerpiece was my MIL’s Pioneer Woman Charlie Dog Cookie Jar with a paw-ty hat atop his head. Look at those puppy-dog eyes!
Mark helped me hang some paw-print balloons from the chandelier to add to the festive feel.
For paper goods, I purchased pink plates to complement these “Doggone Cute” napkins.
Here’s a snapshot of another vignette I created on the lanai using items we already had at home. I’m a big fan of using what you’ve got!
Puppy Tales Storytime
After brunch, the cousins gathered in the living room for some reading time together. I had on display all of the books about dogs in our pawsession (wink), and the older cousins enjoyed reading aloud to the younger ones.
So, the adults had some downtime to clean up brunch while the kids cuddled together on the couch. It was paws-itively precious!
Puppy-Themed Cake
My MIL Rachael offered to take care of ordering the birthday cake, and she spoiled us all with a decadent cake from Betty Cakes in Ocala, FL (the best cakes I’ve ever enjoyed). They decorated the side with little black paw prints for us.
Rachael also added some cake toppers with the “Let’s Pawty” sign and little puppy figurines that she later gifted to Pepper.
We had to snap a photo of the big girl with ma and paw.
Can’t believe our little Pepper is “twoof!” We sang happy birthday to the big girl while she grinned from ear to ear…
…then, she did her best to blow out her candles…
…and got by with a little help from her Paw-paw.
Pepper approves of this cake! So does Maggie-dog. She was on standby, at the ready to help clean up any fallen cake crumbs.
Puppy Chow Party Favors
And I couldn’t resist the opportunity to make my first ever batch of puppy chow that we packaged up in “doggy bags” for guests to take home as their party favor.
Juniper was my trusty assistant and insisted we do lots of taste-testing while we worked. Mmmm…it was such a yummy treat! And so easy to mix up.
While you can find the box on the Chex Rice Cereal box, I recommend this recipe by Show Me The Yummy because it uses the whole box, and Juniper can verify that it is scrum-diddle-umptious!
I purchased these puppy chow labels by YourPrintableShop on Etsy that I printed at home on cardstock and stapled to the top of our treat bags. I loved that they matched our blush pink color scheme and came in two different sizes!
Order of Events
For those of you planning your own “Puppy Pawty” party, I thought it might be helpful to see a breakdown of our activities by time.
I used to be a high school English & theatre teacher, and so I feel most prepared when I draft a detailed schedule in advance. We were able to stick to it, which was important since my niece Reagan had to leave early to get ready for her ballet recital.

To Close
Last year, Pepper’s 1st birthday took place during the lockdown, and while I still went to town with her “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” party theme and we hosted family virtually on Zoom, I was so thankful we could gather safely in-person with family this year.
Our little Pepper just comes to life when she has our attention and presence, and so it was just paw-some to be able to give her that gift on her 2nd birthday. She was giddy with glee–just like, well, a little puppy.
Thanks so much fur reading along today! I hope you’re feeling inspired now about all the creative paw-sibilities for a puppy-themed paw-ty. It’s guaranteed to be a dog-gone good time for every-paw-dy!
I know I’ve gone a bit rover-board with the puppy puns today, so I’ll quit hounding you and let you get back to paw-ty planning! Just give a yelp if I can be of any help.

Omg, so fun reading this with all the puns! Great job!
Tee hee. Glad you enjoyed it! I’m such a pun-nerd.
Thanks for sharing all these great ideas! Can’t wait to have a puppy adoption station at my daughter’s 3rd birthday! So fun!
You are so welcome, Missy! I’m so glad you found inspiration here. This remains one of my favorite parties I’ve ever thrown!
so happy remembering this party and all the exciting and fun parties you have been designing lately! I don’t think this is roverboard at all. I think the writing is completely appupriate.
This is me smiling so wide at that last sentence with your original, clever pun. Thanks for celebrating ME and my party-obsessed ways and being my right-hand-man at all the shin-digs we throw. You’re the Pongo to my Perdita!
What a wonderful post for a Puppy Pawty! I’ve never seen or heard about a party quite like it…from the puppy name collar to the check-ups, the little dog houses, adoption papers, puppy chow, and so much more. An amazing resource for anyone wanting to plan a similar themed party. It could so easily be adapted for a kitty pawty, too, or any animal-themed gathering for kids. The puns were over the top and kept me smiling! The photos delighted and I loved the many facial expressions of our dear Pepper! Thanks for sharing the process and the creative ideas and food, as I know it will be helpful to others. It also was such that I felt like I was there, too! Hhhhhhappy Birthday to Pepper and her little doggy named Hhhhh. 😉
