VIDEO: A Manifesto for the “Never Enough-ians”

One second everyday.

I’ve been recording one second of video every single day for the past four years of our lives.

Watching back a montage of that footage, I can watch Juniper grow up before my eyes in a matter of minutes…going from a breech baby in my belly to a three-and-a-half year old in a princess dress singing show-tunes and doting on her baby sister Pepper.

It’s wild. It’s wonderful. It’s my video diary of these days that go by in the blink of an eye.

How Do I Do It?

I use an app fittingly called 1 Second Everyday, and it honestly makes the process so easy and super fun. I even wrote a blog post once upon a time all about my process of using the app, which you can read HERE if you’re curious.

Spicing Up My Seconds!

Well, after four years of seconds, I decided to spice up my seconds for the month of January by trying something new. I would use my 31 seconds to spell out a message 31 words long. One word per day!

This is an idea I’ve been itching to tackle ever since I saw THIS inspiring video by @headsquirrels last year. It was featured on @1SecondEveryday’s Instagram page, and I marveled at how a few words scribbled onto index cards could be so impactful. Poetic even!

The first month of this new year seemed like the perfect month for me to take on this new challenge.

And my message?

Well, on January 1st, while sitting on a bench at sunset at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, I discovered my “one word” for 2020: E N O U G H. (You can read the whole story HERE.)

So, I determined that my index cards would spell out a message of love and grace to those who–like me–struggle to believe we are enough as we are. Who fear there will never be enough time or energy for the hopes and dreams in our hearts. Who fall prey to the lie that our worth hinges on our successes. On how many goals that we crush or gold stars that we earn.

I call us “The Never Enough-ians.”

January can be such an exciting time for us. It’s a shiny new year without any failed goals or unrealized aspirations to tarnish it. Oh the possibility! We think, “This is the year things will be different. This is the year I will finally…..”

And then, February rolls around with her cigarette dangling from her lips and jaded condemnations: “Look at you. Look at those goals you barely touched. Why did you even try? You’re pathetic.”

Okay, so maybe your month of February isn’t a chain-smoker like mine is. But maybe she’s just as cutting with her remarks. And maybe you need to call her out as a liar and saboteur like I do.

If so, here it is: A Manifesto to the “Never Enough-ians.” May this be the truth we remember and declare to silence the lies. And cling to the truth that we are loved as we are. Goals met or unmet.

And in case those seconds flew by a little too fast, here’s the manifesto written out:

As we start a new year, let’s remember that we are human beings, not human doings. Whether we achieve our goals or not, God loves us…and that’s a game-changer.

May it be an encouragement to those who struggle to feel like they are ENOUGH as they are.

The Journey Ahead

I want to grow into the sort of person who doesn’t find her worth in her achievements, but in who I am: God’s beloved child.

I want to experience His love simply by being with Him, believing I cannot do anything to earn that love.

Believe me when I say that this is not my bent. This is not going to be easy. There’s no clear road map for this journey ahead.

But thankfully I don’t need one. I just need to trust the One leading me there, out of the place of “Never Enough” into the land of “I Am Enough Already.”

This is Lauren, signing off.
