Disney Theme!

For this year’s theme, I decided to indulge our 2-year-old Juniper’s Disney obsession with Disney-themed punny Halloween costumes…more specifically, Disney-food mash-ups!

…”Prince Charming” or rather, “Prince CHARM-ing.” Get it?

I see those slow head nods and eye rolls. {Grin.}

Usually what I love about punny Halloween costumes is that they don’t require much effort at all and are perfect for last-minute. Throw some letter Ps on your shirt and makeup under your eyes, and you’re the “Black Eyed Ps.”

…they did require some time and crafting to pull off. But for me, anytime I bust out the spray paint, fabric scissors, or glue gun, I’m in my happy place. And after seeing it all come together for our family photo shoot, it was worth all that painting, cutting, and gluing.

I’ll share the details of how we pulled off each of these looks for those of you inspired to access your inner Disney prince, princess, mouse…or foodie! It’s totally do-able for the beginner crafter.

Let’s dive in, costume by costume, shall we?

Minnie M&M

Juniper has been a Minnie Mouse fan ever since my friend Fran gifted her a Minnie Mouse bathing suit. We’ve since acquired much more “Minnie” gear. When some late-night inspiration struck to put a Disney-twist on the scrumptious mini M&M candy and have her dress up as a “Minnie M&M,” I knew this costume would be right up our toddler’s alley.

I purchased *this adorable Minnie Mouse dress on Amazon in size 2T for Juniper, and it fit her 2 a T. {Wink.} I love how it bounces as she walks and fans out when she sits down. How cute! (*Note: I’ve included affiliate links throughout this post for your convenience. Thanks for supporting The Thinking Closet.)

The only downside is it doesn’t have snaps on the bottom for easy diaper changing or potty access, but we can live with that. It also came with a cute set of polka-dotted Minnie Mouse ears. And I picked up a pair of red dress shoes by Cat & Jack from Target (not available online sadly).

I have a Silhouette machine, which enabled me to cut out the “m” in the classic M&M font on white vinyl (here’s a tutorial for cutting vinyl with your Silhouette). But good old-fashioned scissors will do! Here’s the link to the free image I used for the “m,” which you could print onto white paper or white sticker paper.

I adhered my vinyl “m” on a circle I hand-cut out of red felt with adhesive backing from my local craft store similar to this product on Amazon. I wanted the M&M to be removable so we could get lots of wear out of this dress beyond our punny Halloween!

The most time-consuming element of all of our costume crafting were Junie’s mouse ears, which I covered in mini M&Ms…or so it appears.

We live in sunny Orlando, Florida where actual chocolate candy wouldn’t stand a chance in the 80 degree October heat. But I really wanted to incorporate mini M&Ms into her costume to help tie it all together.

So, I had the idea to spray paint some lentils in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and brown…hoping they could mimic the real deal.

And I gotta say, I’m really pleased with how they turned out!

So minnie of them! {Wink wink.}

Aside from missing the “m” text on ’em, they look rather appetizing to me. Good thing they’re hot-glued on so Juniper doesn’t try to take a bite! {Tee hee.}

I made sure to pick up some actual mini M & Ms to give my “mini-me” as a treat! (Or should I say,  my “Minnie-me”?)

Not sure about that whole, “Melt in your mouth, not in your hand” slogan. I don’t think it applies in our tropical climate!

Taco Belle

Now let’s tacobout my costume! {Snicker snicker.}

My punny “Taco Belle” costume was 100% inspired by the very talented Costume Designer, Olivia Mears. Story has it, she dressed up as Belle from Beauty & the Beast and happened to find herself at a Taco Bell fast food restaurant. Of course, she needed to snap a photo of “Taco Belle” ordering at the counter, and it went viral. Three years later, she created a dress to fit the pun and went viral again. Check out her “Taco Belle” costume HERE. It’s epic.

Beauty & the Beast is near and dear to my heart. I remember seeing it when it first came out in theaters, and it was the first Broadway musical I saw as a child. So, not gonna lie, I was super stoked for a chance to access my inner bookish Belle and celebrate one of my favorite foods from south of the border with this punny Halloween costume.

I found this iconic yellow Belle dress on Walmart.com, and I’ve gotta give them props for speedy shipping and easy returns (I originally ordered a large, but it was too big…so I landed on a medium). I’d say size down on this one is you’re using the measurements on their website. It also comes with a yellow headband and clear straps, neither of which I ended up using.

I ordered a few other accessories to complete the “Belle” look: these yellow gloves on Amazon, a hoop skirt on Amazon that is no longer available, but is similar to this hoop skirt (I’d say a hoop skirt is necessary for this dress!), and a pair of tiny taco earrings handmade by The Cute Food Corner on Etsy. I definitely plan on rocking these earrings in day-to-day life. Especially on Taco Tuesdays!

Note the tiny taco earrings!

Oh, and I mustn’t forget the Belle-esque wig I ordered on Amazon. It came in two pieces (the main wig and then a clip for the ponytail on top), and I feel like that completed the transformation–not to mention, it saved me from a long and frustrating battle with my own curling iron. In certain lights, the wig hair looks a little more auburn than dark brown, but I still think it suits Belle just fine!

Now, as for those tacos…I purchased some felt in light orange, light green, dark brown, red, and yellow from my local JoAnn’s Fabric store, cut ’em up into taco shells, lettuce, meat, tomatoes, and cheese with fabric scissors, and glued together my tacos using hot glue. I used the visuals from this tutorial as inspiration. And here’s a peek inside my taco before I sealed it up with glue.

I decided to create 5 big tacos to nest in the draping of the gauzy overlay of my dress, 3 medium sized tacos for my shoulders and a prop to hold, 4 smaller tacos to line my waistline, and 1 teeny tiny taco for my neckline. Most of these tacos were strategically placed to cover up the pink flowers decorating the dress.

I really debated long and hard about making these tacos permanent fixtures on the dress or not…and ultimately decided to just go to town with my hot glue gun. But if you were adept at a sewing machine, that’d be even better.

Pssst! Any interest in calling this dress your own for next Halloween? I’m planning to auction it off for charity early next month, November 2018. If you’d like to stay in the loop on auction details, just drop me a note in the comments or reach out to me at thethinkingcloset {at} gmail {dot} com, and I’ll email you when the time comes!

Is anyone else feeling a Taco Bell run coming on?

Does anyone else feel like their Disney Princess name is “Taco Belle”?

You’re not alone!

For Mark’s Halloween costume this year, I was inspired to whip up my own version of a punny “Prince Charm-ing” after coming across this idea on Instagram.

We went for the classic Prince Charming look with Mark’s costume, purchased on Amazon. The size large fit him best in the shoulders, but the pants were super long, so we just created a temporary hem using fashion tape (love that stuff!). And I deconstructed a Lucky Charms box and hot glued it to his sash to have some fun pun!

I also nabbed Mark’s crown on Amazon and went to town “bedazzling” it with Lucky Charms.

Juniper stayed curiously close during that crafting session and may have snuck a few marshmallows when I wasn’t looking. What can I say, they’re magically delicious!

It was a happy accident that all three of our costumes were Disney-food mash-ups–and happy indeed! I don’t think I’ve chowed down a bowl of Lucky Charms since early childhood. It’s been cereal-sly fun to enjoy marshmallows for breakfast once again! Nom nom nom….
