Flip-Through Video Tour of My Journaling Bible

Flip-Through Video Tour of My Journaling Bible | Join me on this fun lil' video tour of the first 10 entries of my E.S.V. Journaling Bible in which I share tips, tricks, favorite supplies, techniques I've been exploring, and why this has been such a meaningful way for me to study the Bible these past 3 months. I hope it's an encouragement to you wherever you find yourself in your journey.

It has been a little over three months since I first started pouring my heART into the margins of my *Crossway E.S.V. Journaling Bible…and to say it has revolutionized my Bible study experience is an understatement.

My introductory blog posts this spring were met with such enthusiasm and some great questions, so I thought it might be worthwhile to do a lil’ flip through video tour of my first 10 entries.  My hope is that this might serve as inspiration for some of you who are also at the beginning of your journey into this form of art worship.  Or if this is a new concept for you, perhaps it will open you up new possibilities for engaging with scripture.

This post is essentially a transcript of the video, so feel free to reference it for resources and supplies I mention.  I also include video times for each entry below, so you can easily hop around!

I’ll say with these first ten entries, this has been a highly experimental phase for me of trying out different mediums and exploring different techniques, which of course means embracing mistakes–lots of them.

And actually, that’s a great segue to dive into my first entry, my Permission Pages.

1.  Permission Pages

1:373:39

Permission Pages: A Perfectionist's Approach to the Journaling Bible | Determined not to let my perfectionism get the best of me, I began the first pages of my new Journaling Bible with a set of what I call "Permission Pages" where I outline what this Bible is for and what it is not for. I even provide a disclaimer about what *may happen to these pages (spoiler: they won't stay "neat"). And with this bold decree under my belt, I can now venture forth to pour out my heART in the margins with the kind of artistic freedom every creative act should possess. Here's my story and my tips for other perfectionists about to begin their Journaling Bible journey!
Permission Pages: A Perfectionist’s Approach to the Journaling Bible

I actually dedicated an entire post to sharing these pages and my reasoning behind why I created them.  (Which you can check out HERE.)  But basically, I decided that if I wanted to free myself of perfectionism and allow this experience to be one of true artistic freedom, I needed to make a bold beginning.  A declaration of what this Bible is for—what this Bible is not for–what might happen on these pages…and thus, the Permission Pages were born!

It was an extremely valuable exercise for me, and I’d recommend it to anyone who might have a Journaling Bible but is feeling too paralyzed by perfectionism to even start.  Because once you declare that this Bible is for “sloppy handwriting” and “making misteaks” {wink}, and that it’s not for “showing off my mad art skillz,” the pressure is off!  And then it can become a really sweet time of meditation on God’s Word.

Now, I’ll jump around and show you my pages in chronological order, so that means we’ll be jumping around from New Testament to Old and back again.  There’s really no method to my madness.  Sometimes, I’ll explore a favorite passage.  Other times, it’s a song lyric that leads me to the scripture.  Or a quote from a book.  Other times, I allow the art supplies to inspire me.  There’s no telling what will spark an idea for my next entry.

2.  “Consider the lilies of the field….”  Matthew 6:28-30

3:415:04

Welcome to My Journaling Bible: heART in the margins | Here's a closer look at my first pages! Check out the full post for the inside scoop Q & A style about this new movement sweeping the margins of Bibles everywhere...and how you can use art to engage with scripture in a new and exciting way!

I decided to go big or go home with my first scripture entry, and I busted out the acrylic paint.  Shana Noel, the founder of the Illustrated Faith movement, has developed a really great technique for applying paint thinly to your Bible pages using a gift card or credit card.

I used some of the pages in the back as tester pages, stuck some cardstock behind the page to protect the sheet behind it before starting, and then I just went wild.  It may be hard to tell on film, but all of the text is still visible, which was important to me.

I then used a mix of stickers, cut-outs, doodles, and handwritten text in my layout.  You’ll also see I used my Trodat Economy Self-Inking Date Stamp to mark each date, otherwise I would quickly forget.

3.  “…every bitter thing is sweet.”  Proverbs 27:7

5:046:37

Learning to celebrate mistakes and embrace them as part of the beautiful mess on my Journaling Bible pages. That's growth right there for this recovering perfectionist!

Here’s an example of a layout that was inspired by a sticker: the mason jar with the “sweet” label was just so darling.  And it worked perfectly with a Bible verse that had already been on my mind after reading Sara Hagerty’s book, Every Bitter Thing is Sweet.

You’ll also notice that I tab all of my pages with a word or phrase that can sum up the theme of the verse.  And I have them all on the top edge, so you can see them when the Bible is closed.  Some are made using washi tape, others cardstock.  I have a tab punch I use sometimes that makes the job really easy.

The hardest part can be distilling a passage down to a single word or phrase; but I like the idea that if I need a reminder about God’s grace or having trust in the Lord, the tabs can take me to a scripture passage that will speak to that.

I’ve also seen tabs with the verse reference, so I’d recommend tabbing your pages in a way that fits how you engage with scripture.

4.  “And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”  1 Kings 19:11-12

6:377:48

1 Kings 19:11-12 & Jet Hatmaker Qutoe from The Modern Girl's Guide to Bible Study | Just another stop on the Flip-Through Video Tour of My Journaling Bible!

Here’s a fun one where I incorporated all sorts of new mediums: I did a little Mister Huey’s misting spray to help highlight the text.  I worked in some enamel dew drops from Freckled Fawn, as well as a tag.

But I remember this was the piece of text where I didn’t do a rough sketch of my layout in advance like I usually try to do, and I ran out of space with the last word of this Jen Hatmaker quote.

But thankfully, I hadn’t glued down my gift tag, so I was able to tuck the grand finale behind it–a great example of how mistakes can sometimes be great opportunities to think outside the box and get creative.  Oftentimes, the outcome can end up even better than if it had gone without a hitch.

So, lesson learned: don’t freak out when you make a mistake.

5.  “It is finished.”  John 19:41

7:488:36

"It Is Finished." Another stop on the Flip-Through Video Tour of My Journaling Bible | Join me on this fun lil' video tour of the first 10 entries of my E.S.V. Journaling Bible in which I share tips, tricks, favorite supplies, techniques I've been exploring, and why this has been such a meaningful way for me to study the Bible these past 3 months. I hope it's an encouragement to you wherever you find yourself in your journey.

One of my favorite places to go for inspiration is Instagram.  It’s where I discovered this powerful Jon Acuff quote, and it’s where I found some doodle-inspiration over at Bumble and Bristle.

Sometimes, I’ll just search the #JournalingBible and #IllustratedFaith hashtags and see what jumps out at me!

This was also my first foray into watercolor in my Bible.  I kept the water to a minimum, and there was really little to no bleed-through on the other side.  You can just see a bit of darkness from the Staedtler pen.

And I’m okay with that.

6.  “He will cover you with His feathers….”  Psalm 91:4

8:369:46

Journaling Bible in which I share tips, tricks, favorite supplies, techniques I've been exploring, and why this has been such a meaningful way for me to study the Bible these past 3 months. I hope it's an encouragement to you wherever you find yourself in your journey.

Here’s one inspired by my rolling feather stamp that I found in the clearance section at Hobby Lobby.  I decided to write out the verse in the N.I.V. translation since the E.S.V. version used the word “pinions” instead of “feathers,” and I don’t know about you, but “pinions” is not a regular word in my vocabulary!

Another fun fact is that I’ve worked on the vast majority of these pages alongside a friend or in this case, family.  My M.I.L., S.I.L.s, and I enjoyed a “Girls Weekend” together this April, and we spent a few hours of our Sunday morning in art worship together.

When I work in my Journaling Bible with friends, it’s usually a very quiet time with minimal conversation–possibly with music playing–and we all work independently at the same table, sharing supplies.  It’s pretty great!

7.  “…be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”  Romans 12:2

I hope it's an encouragement to you wherever you find yourself in your journey.

So, I was clearly inspired by the chalkboard style with this layout; although I ran into a bit of trouble, first with the paint spilling over the bounds onto the text.  Then, I had trouble with the white paint pen actually sticking to the opposite page.  I ended up running a strip of clear packing tape down the edge to prevent further sticking.  Problem solved!  But if anyone knows of a non-sticky white paint pen, lemme know.

Also, I’ll point out that some of my favorite alphabet stickers to use are these label letters by Tim Holtz.  They’re tiny enough that you can tackle longer words in your margin without spilling over…plus, they’ve got a fun retro vibe goin’ on, and I feel like the match any color scheme.  I’m a big fan.

8.  “So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.”  Matthew 14:22-33

Fun with Gelatos! Just part of the Flip-Through Video Tour of My Journaling Bible | Join me on this fun lil' video tour of the first 10 entries of my E.S.V. Journaling Bible in which I share tips, tricks, favorite supplies, techniques I've been exploring, and why this has been such a meaningful way for me to study the Bible these past 3 months. I hope it's an encouragement to you wherever you find yourself in your journey.

This was my first page trying out my Faber-Castell gelatos in pastel.  And if you’ve never heard of them before, they are “acid-free pigment sticks,” and they are magical.  They glide onto the page like butta’.  You can leave them as they are like I did here or take a wet brush and they become like watercolors.  I loved working them, and I can still see the text through the gelatos, no problem.  I’m excited to experiment with them even more!

Now, I feel the need to share this little tidbit because it has happened to me several times…and chances are, it will happen to you, too.  But a part of what is so wonderful about this style of Bible Journaling is that it gives my “thinking” brain a rest.  It’s really quite therapeutic.

But that also means that I’m prone to misspellings and word mix-ups.  Prime example, with this lyric from the song “Oceans” by Hillsong United, I wrote “wherever you would lead me” rather than “call me.”  And it bothered me so much, I had to go back and fix it with a cardstock overlay.  But again, it ended up really accenting those last two words, and I think it ended up a better design in the end.

So, if you find yourself regressing in your grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills, don’t worry.  That’s totally normal!  I find it does help to pre-write your text on scrap paper and refer to it often.  But if you don’t, it’s not the end of the world.

9.  “He is like a tree planted by water….”  Jeremiah 17:7-8

13:0114:46

A double-page layout in Jeremiah 17....

This is the first entry I did where I embraced a double-page layout, and let me tell ya, it was fun.  I love how it looks with the branches splayed over both pages.  Now, this tree was 100% inspired by a tree by Kayla Makes Art on Instagram.  But it really gripped me and looked like a do-able design.  So, I sharpened up my colored pencils and just slowly but surely built my tree.

Just to give you all a sense of time investment, I tend to work slowly…each of my pages might take me 1 to 2 hours…and this one more like 3.  It’s why I have only 10 entries in 3 months.  But it’s a worthy time investment for me; coloring in this tree was the most peaceful part of my week last week.  This scripture from Jeremiah 17 has such a significance for me now.  So, there’s that.

Designs can be much simpler, too.  It’s amazing what you can do with alphabet stickers.  My mom did a really cool layout for her first Journaling Bible entry using magazine clippings and stickers…it was awesome!  And required zero drawing skillz.  So, if that’s what holding you back, let me just reaffirm that this isn’t an art contest.  It’s really an opportunity to engage with scripture in a new way.  And there are many ways to go about it.  So, come one, come all!

10.  “…in whatever situation I am to be content.”  Philippians 4:11

14:4615:41

Bloom where you are planted....

I recently went through Stephanie Ackerman’s “Born to Bloom” devotional, which inspired my entry for this week.  The kit comes with some of her hand-lettering stamps, and so I put those to use in this layout atop some red and pink acrylic paint.

Fun fact: usually my StayzOn stamp ink bleeds through, but when stamped atop a thin layer of paint, there really was minimal bleed-through.  And I really loved how smoothly my Faber-Castell big brush pen wrote atop the paint, as well…so I’ll definitely bring these supplies back together for a lil’ reunion in the future.

To Close

15:4118:50

So, that concludes the video tour of my first 10 Journaling Bible entries.  I’m really excited to continue to fill up this Bible with more art journaling and watch it grow thicker and more worn.

This really has been exactly what I needed to encounter scripture anew and express what I’m learning in my own language of doodles and paint splatters and washi tape.

There’s also an incredibly vibrant community of Bible-Journalers out there who each have their own unique style and mode of expression.  And if watching this video ignited something in you–even if you’ve never really studied the Bible before–I would encourage you to follow that spark.  See where it leads you.

You don’t even need a Journaling Bible with space in the margins.  There’s a lot you can do with adding overlays.  Heck, you don’t even need to do this in a Bible!  Just a blank notebook will do.  But setting aside even just a few minutes in your day to dive into the text, and see where your pen or paintbrush leads you can change the course of your day…or your week…or better yet, your life.  And I have a hunch it will be an adventure you don’t regret!

Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to take this Flip-Through Video Tour with me.  I had a ball!

  1. I’d love to know more about your experiences Bible journaling with a group. I’ve been thinking it would be a great way to build relationship among the ladies in our congregation. We are all separated by quite a distance and don’t see each other often. I think this might be a way to relax together and share our hearts.

    1. Hi Karen! Bible Journaling with friends is one of my favorite things, and I’ve been wanting to write a post on the subject for years now! Your comment is a helpful nudge to jump it up on the to do list. But your gut instinct is spot on: it really is such a sweet way to build relationship with other soul sisters. And Bible Journaling groups are becoming really popular, so you could surely glean insight from others on how they run. I actually had inquired about this one time in the Bible Journaling Facebook Group. If you’re already a member, you should be able to see my post HERE. If not, just request access, and then click the link. And check out some of the comments for inspiration! Best to you.

  2. Hi Lauren: I love your video!! I am a newbie with bible journaling. I need all the help I can get with being confident in using product. Also, would love to have some understanding how you pick a verse to go with and run with the theme’s. Your voice on your video’s are so calming and comforting. Thank You for what you do. I live in New Hampshire and will visit Florida from time to time not sure where you are but my husband and I are headed to Disney at the end of February and wondered if you were close by? Your Little is so sweet and I can see you being a great mum. Thank you!! Lynne Thomas

    1. Lynne! I’m so glad you found my video and that it bolstered your confidence! My biggest word of advice is to dive in, not letting fear hold you back because Bible Journaling is about your walk with God first and foremost. It’s a conversation between the two of you and isn’t an art contest. So, give yourself grace to make mistakes and experiment and explore. God’s grace is sufficient for us! In terms of how I pick a verse, I have many different in-roads, as I share in the video. Sometimes a song lyric sparks me to find a piece of scripture that connects. Other times, the scripture is where I start…and I pull out a favorite verse or idea. Sometimes, an art supply will inspire me to find scripture that connects. As long as we are in the Word, it doesn’t matter how we get there! (My two cents.) We’re not close enough to Disney to make quick trips unfortunately, but I know you and your husband will have a blast. Aw, and thanks for your sweet words about my daughter. I think I’ll keep her. {Wink.}

  3. I’ve always wrote in the margins of my Bible, so I have no problem with markings. What I loved about the cover blank pages is that you wrote all “this Bible is for” the giving yourself permission to be creative. There are bible now that have art work in them and you color the pages, How do you feel about them?
Loved the video! Thank you for sharing, lovely. I can see how favorite scripture or a scripture that speaks to you can be remembered when you pour this lovely art work into it.

    1. So delighted to meet another kindred spirit in you. Yes, those permission pages have been SO very helpful in setting me free to let it be a space free of perfection and full of creativity. Yes, I’ve seen some of those Bibles that have artwork on some of the pages…and spaces to color. I think that’s great! Whatever inspires you to study His Word and open up your Bible! Thanks for stopping by and for watching the vid. Take care, Jackie!

  4. Lauren, I am just beginning my bible journaling art book and loving it as well. I LOVED your video. Your voice is easy to listen to and easy to follow. I would appreciate lots more videos. I would love some step by step. Your writing is so nice and neat, any tips on that? So YES please and I would subscribe to uuour posts. Thanks so much.

    Deb from Oklahoma

    1. I am so happy to hear that, Deb from Oklahoma! Thanks for the warm words! I’m hopefully to make some more videos with my Journaling Bible soon…and am working on a workshop for beginners, too! Eek! If you haven’t already subscribed to my newsletter, you can do that to stay in the loop on that and future vids: https://www.thinkingcloset.com/email

As for the writing, I think it just comes with years of playing around with my handwriting and doodling in the margins of my school notebooks (instead of paying attention…ha ha). But there are tons of hand-lettering for beginners books out there. My gal Amy from One Artsy Mama recently released a book.

      Blessings on your Journaling journey!

  5. Hi Lauren, I just came across your video via a pinterest post, and loved it!! Thank you so much for sharing. All your pages are beautiful, and i just loved how you turned your few “oops moments” into learning and creative opportunities.

One question….what are you using to record the audio for your video? It’s incredibly crystal clear, so i was curious if it is a special mic or app?

    thanks and blessing,
    Miranda

    1. Aw, thanks for the kind words about the video! And I’m so glad you found the audio to be top notch.

I absolutely LOVE my mic, which I purchased for recording my eBook audio book. The quality is truly incredible! It is the one recommended by Pat Flynn, one of my favorite entrepreneur prodcasters. He used it before upgrading to a more expensive mic.
Here’s the link to the mic. I do a fair amount of audio recording for other projects, too, so I figured it was a worthy investment. It also came with a basic table-top stand. I also purchased two types of windscreens: this one and this one.

(Psst! These are affiliate links, but no pressure to use them.)

And I edit my audio in Garage Band, which is an app on my MacBook Pro.

Hope that helps, Miranda! Best of luck to you.

  6. I am of a generation a bit older that you…without revealing too much, I’ll just tell you that my three daughters are all getting married within the next 6 months!! So Bible-Journaling is my go-to stress reliever. Getting into the Word and being in touch with Jesus Christ on a daily basis has been a goal of my procrastinating self…so this is the link. Thanks for your timely and informative and inspiring video.

    Your friend in Christ,
    Beth

    1. Oh wow, Beth! Congrats to you and your daughters. What an exciting time! But yes, also a potentially stressful and busy one. I’m so glad you’re seeking the Lord out to be the source of your strength. And the fact that He could use me to encourage you along the way is such an honor and joy. Blessings, sister!

  7. Wow!! Just wanted to say thank you so very much for sharing your time, talent and heart ❤️ I am one of the perilized, overwhelmed non-artists ! So — for me your permissions pages totally eased my spirit. Thank you!! I’ve been pinning, reading and enjoying the works of others for days now ! I am so captivated ! It’s like music for my eyes ? so — today I boldly ordered my journaling Bible which should arrive in just a few days! I cannot wait to begin my Bible journey!!! Thank you again so much for sharing !

  8. Love your videos. Thank you for the inspiration. My goal this year is to read through the entire bible (which I have never done) and during my research I learned about bible journaling so started that a few months ago. I need help coming up with page layouts since I’m not an artist or doodler, that’s how I found your site. I also am experimenting with chalk paint; that video is great too.

  9. Lauren, I loved your video share! Thank you so much! I am looking into starting a group at my church so that others might invest in the Word in this way. I am looking for ways to do that. I am overwhelmed with what to include! I’m looking for how to keep it more concise and stick to important points. I’m also not sure if I’ll do this as a one-time event and see where it goes or to set it up for a monthly gathering. I’d love feedback if you know of someone who has sorted this out. I did see the free workbook on Lifeway, but it is more simple than I’d like I think. I don’t want to re-invent the wheel.

    1. These are great questions, Sherry, and just that fact that you are asking them tells me you’ll run a fantastic group (I wish I could be a part of it). I’ve only ever journaled with a friend, one at a time, but I highly recommend asking this question in the Journaling Bible Community on Facebook. It’s over 30K strong now and you’ll no doubt receive some helpful pointers from folk who have gone before us on this one. Blessings!

  10. WOW! You have encouraged me to do what I didn’t believe I could even try. I NEED to write my own “permissions page”. What a concept! I had so convinced myself that I have no artistic talent, that I thought I would need to leave the Illustrated Bible concept to those with ability. Not so! I can’t wait to get started!! Thank you! Thank you for sharing this gift for me to find.

    1. Praise God! That’s all Him giving you the confidence and courage you needed to dive in to His Word in this wonderful, new way. Certainly, those insecurities will creep up now and again (as they do for me), but keep returning to that permission page and remind yourself of the truths you know deep down. Blessings!

  11. Fabulous video!! Thank you!! I’ve been thinking of doing journalling in my Bible but afraid even though I do write and mark up and colour in my bible … This is so very helpful for getting started and I look forward to reading further down all your supplies and stuff – I’m sharing this with a girlfriend who is also interested and hopefully we can encourage one another

  12. Thank you for such a wonderful and inspiring video. I’m considering a Bible Journal as a Mother’s Day gift and I especially like your permission page. I look forward to seeing more of your designs.

  13. My comments are:- amazing, thought provoking, my art hero, my favourite people person (permission papers = utter genius!!), gives me courage to actually start placing my art on the pages of my bible. I am so excited to start, and I am sooooooo grateful for your talent and the way you did the video and how you spoke and explained things, it was just perfect. And yes please, I would love to see a video of you doing an actual page; but whatever you do I will be watching. Thank you Lord for Lauren, and all the other lovely people who have commented as they are all your beautiful children .. God bless. Xxx

  14. What a wonderful opportunity to share your faith. I really enjoyed your video. Being a newbie, I’m soaking in all the information I can. You put it out there where it’s very doable. I want to be careful not to be one who copies ideas because the Lord speaks to each of us differently. I hope you’ll continue sharing. One thing I’d love to see is you plan a page, how you “map it out” Thank you for sharing your heART with us.Be blessed as you bless us.

  15. hi Lauren — wow! i have not yet begun – haven’t purchased my journal bible yet…But I am going too! Thank you for your inspirations- I have signed up for your instagram. I would love to know more about the supplies you use, and am interested in seeing your next 5 pages or so….Thanks so much for sharing.
    Blessings
    Teresa

  16. I love your style of explaining how and why you journal. What beautiful pages! As of now I am exploring the idea of journaling. I have always loved books, but felt writing in them diminishes them. Now i am ready to try. Thank you for the inspiration.

  17. This has been such a blessing to read. I am so excited about what you shared. I started journaling last year but was missing “something” and I wasn’t sure what…you filled in the blanks for me!

  18. Thank you very much for the video. I get your email and follow you on fb, I am also a scrap booker . I have so many embellishments, never thought about using them in my Bible, but now I will. The video is so inspiring, I started journaling in my regular Bible by using words that speak to me, also I journal in some of my devotion books. When the Holy Spirit prompts me, I follow His voice. Thank you for sharing your faith and God given talent. I would like to see your next 10 enters. Alice

  19. I love this! I’ve considered doing this, but was “stuck” in where to start! I especially loved the permission pages…that was a huge breakthrough for me!

  20. The English language does not have words clear enough to express how much my heart and spirit have been overjoyed through your video. Your inspiration is palpable!
    Thank you!

  21. Hi Lauren, I stumbled upon a Pinterest Pin of your video. I am fascinated and super stoked by Bible journaling. I’ve not heard of this before, as I started studying the Bible in May of 2015. I am a baby Christian (as of 6/7/15), so I am a giant sponge, absorping everything that speaks to me. Your illustrated faith pages are spectacular and so pretty to view. I’m seriously thinking about starting this project of Bible journaling over my Christmas vacation. I started a small spiral notebook of my favorite scripture about two months ago, but nothing like what I see here — this takes it to a whole new and beautifully personal level. I’m so happy to have stumbled upon the Pin, which took me too your Blog, which will eventually take me to Michaels, Hobby Lobby and AC Moore Crafts! Thank you so much for sharing your gift with the world. In Faith, Renee

  22. Thank you Lord! for you! What a genuis idea! Permission pages. I am a therapist (one day an art therapist) but I got a journaling bible for my birthday and had really seen myself come alive with this form of meditation (actually got attacked by Satan on this one with nightmares-just doing his usual accusing). Thank you for the information, You rock!

  23. This was so amazing! I love this idea. I have done a simplified version of this with colored pencils while reading my bible, but I never thought about making it a part of my worship time quite like this. I love love love it! thank you so much for sharing!

  24. Love this never new about this before. Please could you do one to show us some tequnices. (Bad spelling). Bless you from Australind W.A.Australia

  25. Hi there, just finished watching your flip-through video of your Bible journaling. I have not yet begun to journal. Mainly because I don’t have a journaling Bible. Also, until today, I didn’t really know what to do. You’ve given me a lot of inspiration. Thank you!
As for white paint pens, this isn’t a paint pen but it’s really awesome, the uniball Signo white gel pen. It isn’t a fine tip. More of a broad tip with smooth flowing ink.
Thanks again for this video. 🙂

  26. Your blog is just the inspiration I needed to get started on this next journey discovering God in a different way. So often I find myself in the flow of daily things that even things like time with God seem to just be a chore. I’m so glad I found this post (not to mention it gives me inspiration and reason to visit Hobby Lobby) because I feel like I finally have the knowledge to try something new. I love to get creative and I am thankful that you shared this with the world so those like myself have a chance to explore a new creative path all while creating a relationship with God. Thank you!

    1. I know that old flow you speak of so well, Jordan, and this really was exactly what I needed to jumpstart my quiet time. It brings tears to my eyes to read your testimony and hear how God used this post and video to touch your heart and draw you to him. Wishing you a really vibrant time in the Word as you explore this incredible new way to approach Bible study. Hugs!

  27. Love your journal. If you add a light dusting of corn starch or baby powder over your white gel pen it will loose the stickiness that is causing your problems. I just got into my journaling bible as I got it for a birthday gift. I would love to see more of your work

    1. Wow! What a great tip, Glenda. I would have never thought of that in a million years, but it makes complete sense. Thank you. And that’s awesome that you’re digging into a Journaling Bible of your own. Happy birthday!

  28. Awesome job on your video. Each entry shown was inspirational. So glad that you shared tips, techniques, and good advice. Looking forward to your next video. May the WORD of GOD continue to grow in your heART!

  29. Thank you for inspiring me!! I have been thinking about getting a journaling bible but I’ve been hesitant because I can be a bit of a perfectionist. 🙁 I loved your pages at the beginning about what the journaling bible was and was not for you. A wonderful reminder when having quiet time. My birthday is in a few weeks and my 11yr old son decided he wants to get me a new bible. 🙂 I can’t wait to try out some of your “must haves” (Gelato and the spritz paint) I am so glad I came across your blog!!

  30. I have enjoyed seeing your first 10 pages of Bible Journaling Art. I bought a journaling bible a few weeks ago, some Prism Colored Pencils, Crayola Twistable Crayons, Twistable Colored Pencils, and water colors. But I have not started yet because I’m a bit leery of writing in a bible let alone trying to use color and art. I think I’m ready now that I’ve read your blog and watched the video. Thank you so much!!

    1. Yay! I recently discovered Twistables myself, and I’m in love. Actually they have made it to my list of 20 favorite Journaling Bible supplies, which I’ll be sharing tomorrow! Anyway, I’m glad to hear that you found a dash of courage here to dive in to use color and art on your pages, Susan. It’s really so liberating, so don’t let fear or reticence hold you back. And give yourself permission to let it be about the process and not perfection. That has been HUGE for me!

  31. I absolutely love the permission page, I was just wondering and you may have already answered this, but do you do any prep to the pages of your Bible to ensure that it doesn’t leak through to the other side?

    1. Katelyn, I don’t do any prep to my pages (with gesso), but one of these days I want to experiment with it! I just apply paint thinly and put a piece of cardstock behind the page to protect the others…and I haven’t had bad bleed through!

  32. I have been curious about this form of journaling. I have an art journal, but ran across Bible journaling the other day. I think it is such a cool idea, and your pages are lovely! Thank you for sharing them, and encouraging all of us to dive in!

    1. Why thank you, Kris! I, too, was so taken by this new form of journaling when I first discovered it…it almost felt like it was made for me, ha ha. And I’m glad to hear you received some encouragement from checking out this post! Looking forward to seeing YOUR first ten pages, Kris. Let your creativity spill!

  33. Hey Lauren! I stumbled upon a few of your Bible journaling posts on Pinterest. I had never even heard of it before, and I’m in love. These posts are definitely getting shared on my Facebook page. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m fairly new to blogging, but I started following your blog, and I’m so excited to hear more from you. 🙂
    Laura

    1. Aw, thank you so much for the kind words and social shares! You’re the best! And I’m so touched to hear you’re following along. It’s a delight to have you along for the ride, Laura. Also…welcome to blogland!

  34. I loved this post with the video! It really helped my daughter and I have more confidence in starting a bible journal. We were nervous because neither of us can draw very well. It makes me think of scrapbooking in your bible!!!

    1. Love hearing about mother-daughter collabs! I’m actually planning to do some Bible Journaling with my Mom this weekend when we visit my folks up north. No drawing skills required! And yes, scrapbooking is totally game and really liberating! Enjoy your journaling journey, Denise.

  35. I really enjoyed your video – especially your permission pages, and your invitation to ask questions. I would LOVE to see your next 10 Bible journal entries, and tips on how to create a Bible journaling community. I think the ladies at church would enjoy doing it – and usually the one who thinks of something they would like to do is the one who is responsible for getting it going, so all sorts of help would be appreciated! Bless you for sharing with us!

    1. Why thank you so very much, Janice. I’m deeeelighted to read your warm words! And I’ll be taking those suggestions for follow up posts to heart. I’d love to lead a journaling Bible workshop this fall and then share about what I learned through the process! XO

  36. Thank you for making this video! I’m so in Love with the bible art journaling I see on Pinterest , but I’m not artistic. After seeing your video, I think I might have the nerve to try it myself! God bless you!?

  37. Thank you for sharing your Bible with me this morning. I have a friend that does the wine and art evenings in her home. I have already called her to see if she would partner with me in doing a “friendship” class as we walk through a few pages of the Bible together. Thanks for the inspiration!
    Gail

    1. It was my joy, Gail! Thank you for taking the time to stop by and check it out. I’m delighted to hear about your “friendship” class idea and that you’ve already taken steps toward making it happen. Do keep me posted on how it goes! And happy journaling to you both.

  38. Oh my! I was so inspired by your video. What a WONDERFUL way to meditate on God’s Word. I LOVE it. And, yes, I would love to see another video when you get through your next 10 entries. I love the way to “showed and shared” Thank you for being so transparent.

    1. Hooray! I’m so very happy to hear that, Tassie. I’ll for sure be sharing another video after my next 10 (the feedback has been so helpful!). And it’s my show to “show and share.” It’s how I’ve been inspired by others and so it’s an honor to get to do the same for folk like you!

  39. Oh my goodness. I can’t wait to share this with my teenagers and the youth of our church. What a wonderful way to get youth excited and immersed in God’s word!

  40. Lauren, I’ve never heard of a Journaling Bible before. But, I’ve ALWAYS underlines, and written in the margins. I have one of my Mama’s old Bibles, and it’s so precious to me. She wrote the dates of sermons that were particularly meaningful, and messages in tongues, the interpretations that is. And prayer requests and their answer. I hope someday my unsaved daughters will be saved, and cherish my Bible, like I do Mama’s.
Thank you for showing me a new way to read the Bible.

  41. This video was sooooo helpful and fun. I’m so excited to try the techniques you showed. Please keep those videos coming! Really great work and wonderful theology as well. You ability to be articulate and inclusive at the same time really inviting. Thanks!

  42. Beautiful and inspiring Lauren! It was truly a pleasure and learning experience to be with you when you did the ‘feathers’ page! I love that you sum each one up with a word or two so you can easily access that particular reference. Each page is a beautiful statement of how God is speaking to you!

  43. I loved the tour! I’ve always done my journaling in a note book, so it’s great to see how it works in a bible. If love to see a post about how to journal with others and it would be great to watch you create a page too! Thanks for sharing your creativity 🙂 I’ll look forward to seeing the next ten pages!
    Laura

  44. Lauren,

Your posts are always inspiring, but I felt like I was a step ahead of you tonight. 🙂 I was so excited to watch your video flip-through while working on my own SECOND bible journal entry!! Too funny… you see, after your last post about bible journaling, I promptly TRIED to order my own ESV single-column bible from Amazon. The trouble is that there weren’t any in stock. Believe it or not, I lost track of the number of weeks it took to arrive at my doorstep, but I’ve now had the bible for a couple weeks and have completed two entries. I’ll have to email a few pictures to you.

If you were to create a follow-up video, I would love it to be about the art of lettering. Not every journaler is gifted in the way of creating letters, and it would be great to see your approach in “slow-motion” if that’s possible. I’m sure you have a few tips for lettering that others would benefit from knowing. This would give us a chance to see some of the supplies in action as well. Just a thought! Thanks again for sharing, Lauren. The Lord uses your posts all the time.

    Fondly,
    Emme

  45. Dad and I just watched this together! Well done and you are so encouraging. Embracing the mistakes and thinking outside the box if they happen is so freeing.

I am so thankful I had the chance to do my first page with you. Thanks for the shout-out!

If you do another video, I’d love to see some clips of you doing a page–start to finish…and also some tips on doing it side by side with someone. Thank you for posting this! Love reading the comments on the Journaling Bible FB page, too!

  46. Lauren, What a fantastic post! I just got a journaling bible and have been so hesitant to start. I don’t want to mess it up 🙂 This is exactly what I needed. Thanks so much! I’m interested in learning more and anything you have to share, materials, how to use them, etc.

  47. I recently learned about Bible journaling and have just been ‘looking’. Love your video tour. I need to get a journaling Bible and supplies but can’t wait to start. Thanks for your ideas. Love them!

  48. You are so amazing!! Your pages are beautiful – imperfections and all! Thank you so much for the video – great inspiration. I needed the reminder to stop fussing about what I’m going to do in my own journaling Bible and just GET IN THE WORD!

    Love you tons!

  49. Lauren, I LOVE this post! Since you and Kirsten started sharing about Bible journaling, I had to get myself one, and it took me a month to get started. (Like you I’m a recovering perfectionist!) But I love Bible journaling so much now! I shared a few of my pages and a step-by-step tutorial of a page Wednesday, and people have been very interested in learning more. I’m going to share this on my FB page. Thanks for sharing your heART! 🙂

    1. Can someone please tell me where or if I can purchase the red hardcover journaling bible by Crossway?

Your comments make my day!
