Expected and Unexpected Guests
What a whirlwind week it has been!
We’ve been busy hosting company…and not just the human kind. A group of possums have taken up residency in the crawl space above our bedroom. That’s right: possums. (We have visual confirmation thanks to Mark’s headlamp.) Their partying gets extra rowdy from 2 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., and between the air vent and thin walls, it almost sounds like they’re in the room with us. Suffice it to say, we haven’t been getting a ton of sleep lately…at least not until we tried using earplugs last night. They made a world of difference!
Despite the mayhem, I managed to snap a few photos of our happenings these past few days…
We’ve been…
sitting by the Christmas tree as much as possible
feeding the hungry, including wanderer cats
giving gifts to those we love
boating at sunset in the warm December breeze
welcoming family to our home for dinner & s’mores
swinging on our new porch swing down at the dock
enjoying our wood pallet sign, which we finally hung up
soaking up the songs and stories at an Andrew Peterson concert
loving on our nieces and nephews at every chance we get

So, possums aside, I’d say it has been a pretty great past few days! Hope you’re finding joy and peace amidst the “possums” of life.
I am amazed at your bravery sis. I honestly don’t think I could sleep underneath those lumbering possums…I’m seeing growth in courage in you! I’m also thankful you’ve got a fearless hubby who is not afraid to protect his home! 🙂 I loved hearing your stories at Christmas! Especially of A. Peterson, the visiting kitties (esp. the snobby one), your swinging bench, and visiting family members.
The earplugs have helped a ton; if I don’t hear their every lumbering move, I’m less disturbed by the {irrational} thought of them falling through the ceiling onto our bed. Yikes – – just typing that makes me freaked out!
Gah! That makes 2 of us! Though I’m thankful for the humor and joy they continually give me as I think of, “Don’t let dem possums get near the breakah box!!!” That hypothetical scenario is the gift that keeps on giving!
Looks like you’re enjoying the holiday season…despite the possums!;)
We’ve been dealing with our own animal invasion but of the deceased variety. Somehow, something met it’s end in a wall in our house. We did our best to locate it but couldn’t pin point the exact location without knocking a ton of drywall down. I’ve been burning A LOT of apple cinnamon candles and opening the windows when the weather permits all the while googling decomposition rates hoping that the lingering smell will dissipate by Christmas morning! Life is never dull!
Oh, Cindy, I’m so sorry. That sounds much worse than what we’ve got going on! We had something similar happen when I was growing up; a squirrel had plummeted to his untimely death in our fireplace (I think while we were on vacation). The smell was quite horrendous. But we were obviously able to locate the problem and fix it much quicker than y’all. Hope it clears out sooner than later. Keep those candles burning!
Great, that you are enjoying life’s simple pleasures – opossums included.
Funny story, we had a very similar ordeal Thanksgiving at my parents’ house when I was still in high school. A squirrel found its way into the kitchen cabinet space via the attic. It was very much “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, only on Thanksgiving. The bummer…, my father bludgeoned the squirrel to death in my room! (I know, cruel. But, I was scared that it’s ghost was going to come back to haunt me!)
Your stories never fail to crack me up! I keep picturing the ceiling caving in and possums at large in our house. We might need your father to come save the day!
The funniest part (or maybe it is the saddest part), my stories are all true. “It’s true! It’s true!”
Yes, but you see, I think we all have these stories! It just takes some brilliance to see the humor in them. (And you, my dear, are quite brilliant in that regard.)
Agreed, as to the first part. But you see, my dear, if we don’t laugh, we’d cry. 🙂
Well said.
