Scarf Week Recap, Giveaway Winners, & My Epic Scarf Fail

Scarf Week 2014! 16 Scarf Tutorials in one week from 4 different bloggers...what a ride!

Well friends, here we are at the grand finale of Scarf Week!  Thanks to each of you who came along for the ride.  It has been a killer week! (yuk yuk.)  I’ve been amazed by the incredible reception we’ve received through comments on our blogs and across social media, which makes me think that Scarf Week just might have to become an annual event.  The timing is just too perfect as we prepare for the onset of fall; and well…the Shark Week pun is just too fun to retire just yet.

So, save the date, friends.  Shark Week 2015 – – it’ll be getting scarfy once again up in blogland!

Scarf Week 2014! 16 Scarf Tutorials in one week from 4 different bloggers...what a ride!

In celebration of all the fun, crafty scarf projects shared this week, I thought we could take a quick look back at them all (including one of mine that did not quite make the cut).  We also have two lucky giveaway winners to announce!  Eek!  So, let’s get to it.

Scarf Week Recap

Just as The Discovery Channel was unleashing Shark Week on televisions across America, we kicked off Scarf Week here in blogland!  Who’s we?  Let me re-introduce you to TEAM SCARFY!

Rob Lowe even took a break from his Shark Week promotions to do a little photo shoot just for us.  He sure know how to rock a scarf!

Scarf Week 2014 with Dream a Little Bigger, The Learner Observer, The Thinking Closet, Tried & True. 4 tutorials a day from 4 bloggers for 4 days = 16 inspirational scarves. "So Scarfy" indeed, Rob Lowe.
Props to Thalita for this awesome graphic!

Filming and editing 4 video tutorials in less than a week is not for the faint of heart.  Or so I learned!  I about threw in the towel scarf after my first round of video editing took 9 hours!  (Ain’t nobody got time for that!)

But thankfully, I got quicker and quicker at navigating my way around iMovie.  And I had way too much fun being a goofball in front of the camera.

Here’s a lovely little collage of snapshots from my 4 YouTube video tutorials this week.  If you missed any, click the images below to be whisked off to the corresponding post!

My Scarf WEAK Fail

Not all scarves made it to Scarf Week; some made it to Scarf WEAK, however (thanks to my SIL Jodi for that pun).

In yesterday’s video tutorial, I hinted at an epic fail of a D.I.Y. scarf with promise to dish deets.  Actually, I had no intention of ever sharing this, but Mark reminded me of my commitment at the beginning of the year to share more of “the mess.”  So, I’m laying it all out there.

Here’s the deal: my first scarf tutorial of the week was supposed to be an Ombre Dip-Dyed Scarf.  Emphasis on “supposed” to be.

I did all the steps right.  I did my research on different ombre dying techniques until I settled on one that was bound to be a sure-fire success.  I painstakingly dyed 7 different sections of my white scarf for increasing lengths of time to achieve that gradient look.  I filmed the entire process for my video tutorial, offering tips and tricks along the way.  You can imagine my dismay when I rinsed out my scarf only to find that while it no longer looked white – – but blue – – there were no visible gradients.  It was all the same baby blue color.  Pretty…but not ombre by any stretch of the imagination.

Not to be so easily defeated, I did more research.  It turned out that although the Amazon listing for my scarf identified it as viscose, a type of rayon that should accept dye no problem, the tiny tag on my scarf read, “100% polyester.”  And of course, my bottle of RIT dye declared polyester as one of the fabrics not to attempt to dye.  Dope!

RIT Fabric Dye

But where there’s a will…right?

So, I did more research on how to successfully dye polyester, and while the forums weren’t too positive, I did read up on the importance of really heating up your dye bath and having extremely concentrated dye.  (Hence the crock pot method you saw me use in my Tie-Dye Infinity Scarf tutorial on Monday.)

This time, it really looked like it was working.  I could see such a clear transition from very light to very dark.  (Mind you, I was using two bottles of dye this time instead of just the one.)  And then came the moment of truth: the rinse-out in the sink.

Right before my very eyes, I watched all of that beautiful ombre dye just simply wash right off the scarf.  Like water off of a duck’s back.  And just like that, we were back to baby blue.  Pretty, but solid baby blue.  {Sigh.}

While I’ll never get back those hours and hours of failed ombre dying…I did learn a few lessons.  Namely, that when they recommend doing a test dye on a swatch of fabric, you should do a test dye.  Also, don’t think you can outsmart the warnings on the bottle.

Thankfully, I had great success with the same dye the next day with my Tie-Dye Infinity Scarf…and the scarves that followed didn’t give me any trouble!

Still, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to do one of those “Nailed It” memes.  Have you seen these before?  They’re pretty hilarious.  You’ll see a photo of the Pinterest pin (usually well styled and well lit), followed by the failed attempt with the caption, “Nailed It.”  Mark and I laughed to tears over these the other night.  I even made sure to snap my “after” photo inside, with flash, without any editing…because I think that’s part of the charm of these memes.  So, here you have it.  My Ombre Dip-Dyed Scarf in all of her baby blue glory:

Ombre Fabric Dying: Nailed It! | The story behind my failed attempts at gradient dying...and what I learned from the debacle. {Plus 16 Creative Scarf Tutorials that are anything but fails!}

You gotta laugh at these things! {Note that I also nailed “cuff rolling” in that last pic. Sheesh.}

    1. Dude, you are too funny. And for the record, I think your scarf was a success! I can definitely see the gradient. Also…excited about the possibility of you joining in on Scarf Week 2015! Woot woot!

  1. Will truly miss your introductions, tutorials, and the shark/scarf theme on every video in the series! Thanks for sharing your fail, too. So real!

    Congrats to the TWO winners and I’m impressed with your THREE other blogger-friends in the series and your FOUR sponsors: Etsy, I lovetocreate.com, Consumer Crafts, and the Fabric Fairy! Will check them out. I know they are glad they teamed-up with y’all!

  2. Scarf Week looks like it was a lot of fun. I’m sad I missed it! As a knitter and crocheter (I’ve always wondered if “crocheter” is an actual word), I’ve made a LOT of scarves. After making so many, I still have a real soft spot for them. You’d think I would get tired of them after awhile, but NOPE!

    I really love that tie dye infinity scarf, but that might just be because it’s blue and blue is kinda my thing. 🙂 Also, looks nice and light. I live in Mississippi and big thick scarves are only wearable for about three months of the year. It just gets too dang hot and humid around here. Oh, I love the Rob Lowe graphic, too!

  3. What a week it’s been! I’ve loved every nail-biting moment of Scarf Week, and I’m already looking forward to 2015! I’m sorry your ombre didn’t turn out the way you were hoping, but I do love that you share the fails and mess-ups with us as well 😉

  4. Yaaay! Thanks so much for featuring my “scarf on the wall” project! 🙂 This is a super fun series, fun to read, fun all around. I hope you do it again next year!

  5. So glad you can laugh at your fails – it’s either laugh or cry, right?! We all have ’em, though, for sure. Just last week I had to completely scrap a project b/c it worked out so much better in my head than in real life. Oh well…

    Your Scarf Week was a RAGING success, though! I give you two thumbs way, way up for all of your awesome videos and crafty mad skillz. 😉 Congrats to the winners!
