Personalized Milk Bottles & Silhouette Promotion!

Personalized Plastic Milk Bottles: such a fun throw-back to the days of the vintage milk bottle. These would make such great shower favors or hostess gifts (for the kids!). Super easy to customize, too!

Sigh….  I remember the good old days when we’d hear the clink of milk bottles arriving on the front doorstep.  The glass bottles would be icy to the touch.  For once, I actually wanted to drink my milk.

No, I didn’t grow up in the early 1900s.  When I was in middle school, my Mom signed up for a service that would deliver milk in glass bottles to our doorstep each week.  Like magic.  We’d leave the empty bottles in the same place from whence they came, and they’d be picked up by the same service to be recycled.  And so was the circle of our dairy life!

I think eventually, the cost of the service outweighed the vintage charm, and my parents decided to just go back to buying milk at the store in the plastic containers the new-fashioned way…but it was fun while it lasted.

So, of course, I couldn’t help but indulge my inner nostalgia when I saw some vintage-style plastic milk bottles for sale on *Pick Your Plum this past Christmas.  I picked that plum faster than you can say, “Bob’s your uncle!”

Pick Your Plum - Daily Deal Site! They had the cutest plastic milk bottles for sale this past Christmas; if only I had scooped up more of them!

Aside: have you heard of Pick Your Plum?  If not, let me rock your world: it’s a daily deal site with mega-sales on craft supplies, gifts, clothing, jewelry…pretty much everything swoon-worthy.  The deals usually sell out fast, so you can sign up to get an email each morning announcing the deals for that day.  Oh, and all of their packages come with a piece of Laffy Taffy inside; it’s the little things….

A few months later, I found the prefect recipients for those milk bottles three: Avery, Reagan, and Logan, the three precious offspring of my friend Gina from college and her hubby Anton.  (You may remember Gina and Logan from my “Keep Calm & Carry Me” onesie tutorial….)

Mark and I got to visit Gina and her family in Colorado this past February, and the milk bottles seemed like the perfect gifts to leave behind for the kids!

Of course, with three bottles for three kids, color-coding wasn’t enough.  By golly, they needed labels!  (I only grew up with one sibling, and I still very much understood the value of having your name plastered on something.  And not just your first name, but your middle name, too.)

And how would I accomplish such a feat?

Enter…my trusty dusty Silhouette Cameo.

My beloved Silhouette Cameo: my favorite crafting tool of all time!
“Ahhhhhh!”

My absolute favorite thing about my Silhouette Cameo is how easily I can now make personalized gifts.

In less than thirty minutes, I was able to design some labels with the free font KG Lego House, cut them on white vinyl using my Cameo, and slap them onto the plastic milk bottles using transfer paper.  It was almost embarrassingly easy!  (I need more projects like that.)

If you’d like to see a step by step photo tutorial of the process, check out my vinyl labels tutorial.

CARE TIP: If you put vinyl on drinking bottles, just be sure to hand-wash only.

From the smiles on their faces, I think the gifts were a hit!  Vintage milk bottles might be making a comeback, after all.

Oh, and get this: their outfits just happened to perfectly match the colors of their bottles.  How serendipitous is that?  #MFEO.

Where to buy plastic milk bottles like these:

Although I was unable to find these particular bottles for sale anywhere online right now, etsy does have a nice assortment of clear plastic milk bottles with the vintage look that you could customize with your own vinyl labels! I think they’d make great shower or party favors this summer. Or gifts for your hostess’ kids, of course!

  1. Omigosh, these are super cute, but I’ve never used pick your plum, and I don’t see them listed. I wonder if there’s another place to get them? I’ve looked on Aladdin mugs website, and container store… but alas, I’ll have to keep an eye out on PYP. Thanks!

  2. These are pretty and so personalized (with middle names, too) and that’s amazing that the kids’ outfits matched the color of their milk bottles! I had forgotten about the brief interlude having vintage milk bottles delivered to our house in the 90s…that was fun, and the chocolate milk was so delicious! I actually grew up with full glass milk bottles being delivered to an aluminum box at our back door, and our empties retrieved twice a week. Yes, those were special, happy days.
This is a lovely birthday post for Gina today, too!

  3. I bought the same set of milk jugs from PYP last year!! We love them! Not too long ago they had clear with white lids and I almost bought those too! What a cute gift. You are so creative! How did you like Colorado? I moved from there about 5 years ago and still miss it! 🙂
