Fall Decor: Lime Green is the New Orange

Keeping it real.

Lime Green Is The New Orange. A post on Fall Decor from thinkingcloset.com

Okay, first of all, let’s just get one thing straight.  Two years ago, the words “fall decor” translated to “stuff I don’t have time for.”  One year ago, it meant a wreath and one metallic pumpkin (baby steps).  This is the first year in my life where I’ve decided to “deck the halls” for fall, and tackle our home’s transition from summer to fall a bit more intentionally.

You see, I was feeling inspired to make a few changes to our living room space to make it a bit more festive and true to the season, but before I could really get started, I had one major hurdle to overcome: the color orange.

I’m not an orange girl.  Never have been.  Probably never will be.  From a fashion standpoint, I just can’t pull off the color with my greenish olive skin tone, and it’s a color that would feel forced in our living space because…well…it’s not us.

And I’m okay with that.  In fact, there’s a small part of me that kind of delights in pushing the boundaries and breaking convention when it comes to things like fashion or decor.  (Call me a rebel.)

So, I’ve made a decision that this fall, lime green is the new orange.  At least, it is in our household.

Lime Green is the New Orange! Unconventional fall decor...because...why not? thinkingcloset.com

“Wait a minute, but lime green is not a fall color!”

I know, I know.  I heard that little voice in my ear, too.  But, ya know, what?  I grew up in New York where there’s an explosion of color in the treetops around mid-October, and you see every color of the rainbow in the foliage–from magenta to canary yellow to lime green!  Plus, tell me this image I pinned last week doesn’t just scream fall:

So, it’s official.  Lime green is my muse this autumn.

It found its way into these decorative pillows I found online at Sears…

Decorative pillows can help transition a couch into a new season.

…and into this celebratory fall banner I made out of burlap, white cardstock, and…wait for it…Scotch tape!  {To check out my “Happy Fall” Banner Tutorial, click HERE.}

And it wouldn’t be fall without a cozy new throw nearby under which to snuggle on cool, crisp evenings.  (We’re still waiting for those cool, crisp evenings here in Orlando, but when they come, I’m ready!)

A cozy throw is a home decor essentially when transitioning from summer to fall!

And I suppose I lied; we do have some “orange tones” in the space…at least, whenever I whip up a cup of mulled apple cider, which tastes especially yummy when sipped between page-turns of a good book.

It’s fall, y’all!

Who says orange has a monopoly on fall decor? Lime green is the new orange!

Oh, and because I refuse to buy something unless it’s on sale or I have a coupon, you should know that there’s a handy dandy site out there called Coupons.com that has discount codes for thousands of retailers out there.  Well, when I was ordering those pillows and the throw on Sears.com, I made sure to search Coupons.com first for some codes….

…and sure enough, I saved with $5 off my purchase, plus, I used a second code for free shipping!  Double-rainbow all the way.

The Bottom Line

So, here’s the bottom line: even if purple or gray or aquamarine is what you’re feeling drawn to this fall, I say, follow that lead!  Take a risk and add a new splash of color to your living space, even if it’s a bit unconventional for the time of year.  Because all new trends start somewhere, often when someone trusts their instincts and has the moxie to go against the status quo.

And you’ve got moxie.  Yes, you do.

  1. I agree with so many others in that the lime green is a perfect new fall color! It goes really well with the brown too, which reminds me of autumn. I also really enjoy your little color block people up top…did you draw those yourself? Reminds me of that program we had when we were younger…pic art, I think? 🙂

  2. Looks great! I especially think you can pull off “non-traditional” fall colors when you live in a state (like Florida or Texas) that has “non-traditional” fall…a very pleasant way of saying 90 degrees, 99% humidity, etc. So, can hot pink count as a fall color?

    1. That’s a great point, Jessica! I have been boldly breaking the “no white after Labor Rule” now that I’m a Floridian. White tops? Check. White pants? Check. White purse? Check. So, yeah…I don’t see why lime green and hot pink can’t qualify as fall colors! Lack of seasons = no holds barred!

  3. I’ll have to check out that coupons.com site!
Ironically before I read this, I purchased my FIRST “lime” green pumpkin for the front porch this fall. It’s probably closer to white, but I think it’s light green. So I was already “tracking” with you!!

I love how the rebel in you comes out in refreshing ways!! xxoo

    1. We were definitely “tracking” with each other, Mama, on the lime green this fall! Great minds….

And yes, maybe I’m redeeming my rebellious streak with some rebellious decorating! Lol.

  4. The Lime green works fall color or not.
I would love to add turquoise or teals in our house but the husband says no. Well I can add it in my sewing room and he wouldn’t mind. ;o)

    1. Thanks for your vote of confidence about my choice of lime green, Carla! And yes, I say go crazy with the turquoise and teals in your sewing room! Especially if it would ignite your creative juices.

  5. I’d love to decorate my home for fall in a bigger way than I currently do. My one goal this season is to do a fall bunting or banner. I love yours and LOVE the lime green.

    1. Tackling a bunting or banner project is a great way to start. That’s pretty much all I did for Valentine’s Day last year…but it brought so much fun and festivity to our household. (Banners are great in that way; it’s an instant party!) Thanks for the kind comment, Shana!

    1. Harrah! I’m glad that my color choice has earned your stamp of approval! It was one of those risks I’m so glad I took!

    1. True story! And I wouldn’t put it past my Mama to have such a gorgeous spread of apples…especially after one of our epic apple-picking adventures!

  6. Lime green?? O.O

Why not?! Love the colour all year long, and since it looks so fresh and lively next to brown, it’s perfect for fall, IMO. GREAT choice, Lauren.

My colours for fall this year are grey and deep shades of rose into cranberry. Old stand-bys, but I look good in them (with my olive skin). 🙂

    1. Thanks for the encouraging comment, Raven! I’m delighted to know that it jives with the space and suits the season…that was my hope! And I really love your fall color palette. So rich and evocative. And yes, we’ve got to always be aware of the olive skin tones! Lol. 😉

  7. Love it! I have always stayed away from fall decor because I think ‘fall colors’ are beautiful on tree leaves but they are definitely not for me when it comes to decorating. Love your attitude to stick with the colors you love.

    1. Thanks for the affirming words, Carrie! Yes, I really do think we need to follow our heart and break from expectations sometimes…it’s so empowering! Hope you have a happy fall!

  8. Love the lime green. I was at Hobby Lobby yesterday and almost bought a bunch of purple candle holders for fall. I love the color year round, but it’s a good fall color too. Lime greenis fun too. I’m not an orange person but I can go with some orange pumpkins normally. My biggest love for fall and especially Christmas (ok, all year too) is mercury glass. I have a few mercury glass fall items but am bout to take it up a notch with silver, glittery pumpkins. Now it’s time to find the time. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Jessi! I was hoping the lime green would jive with our giant brown monster couches (yes, we have two…don’t ask). Thanks for the pin-love and for taking the time to stop by! I always delight to hear from you, Jessi.

    1. Thanks for taking the time to stop by, Bargain Babe! And you’ll be happy to know I’m resting my back against one of those green pillows right now. They’re cute and functional! (Love it when that happens.)

  9. Hi Lauren, so happy to be here today! I’ve missed you very much! catching up on your recents posts now & I love your new pillows, they do warm up your space 🙂
I never thought I would decorate my house with orange but it’s a happy color for me, so I used it and I love it! I know I’m probably the only one loving orange over here but don’t know why I just do! hi!hi! For Halloween, it’s getting worst around here; I got an orange lamp & pumpkins 😉 but trying to go with black and gold too! I think we should all decorate with the colors we love but after seeing your pictures I think lime green you be considered a FALL color 😉

    1. I think that whatever color makes you happy is one you should embrace, even if it’s orange! I’m sure I’d feel the same way about orange if only I didn’t look sickly whenever I wear it (ha ha). And yes, it really is such a fitting color for Halloween; I think that’s why I felt the pressure to embrace it, but since it wasn’t really “me,” I thought, “let’s give lime green a try!” And so far, I’m diggin’ it. Glad you are, too, friend!

And black and gold is totally chic…with you and your gold leafing, I’m sure those gold accents (and now copper!) all around your house are simply divine!

  10. I really love the lime green for fall – you’re totally right, a crisp apple comes to mind! The color works so well with the rest of your space. Much better than any orange! great work!! xoxo

    1. Oooo! I love your color palette, Amanda. That sounds heavenly! (Especially the “little bit of magenta” part.) You’re a girl after my own magenta heart!

  11. I’m with you on the orange. It’s one of my least favorite colors. Your room looks GREAT! I think we have the same couch. Penneys?

    1. Couch buddies! Yay! Actually, ours was from Ashley Furniture circa 2009 (it was one of our first big purchases as a married couple)…but I’ve seen several much like it, so I have no doubt yours is very similar. I have my tush nestled into a couch cushion right now! 😉

    1. Phew! I was worried I might get majorly rejected by blogland for my unconventional choice, but it turns out, people have really embraced it with open arms! Like you! Thanks, Brooke. Your comment means so much!

  12. How fun! I’d say that my new colour du jour is probably blue – blue in nearly all shades, actually. But when it comes to fall, I have to say that I’m a sucker for gold.

That burlap bunting is too precious! Love it!

    1. Cool points for using “colour du jour.” Oh, you Canadians and your French! And I already think of you as such a blue-girl because of your oh-so-sweet profile pic. So, clearly, it suits you! (And gold is such a great compliment to blue.)

  13. I think lime green is great for Fall! It’s found in nature . . . especially here in the Pacific N.W. where Fall means rain and rain means a lot of green moss! Lime green and turquoise are my colors anytime of the year. I may add some pops of red for Fall though. So glad you’ve bucked tradition to enjoy what you like.
    Blessings,
    Patti

    1. Ooo…I didn’t even think about it in green moss! I love it! And your home is surely beautiful with those bright colors. Thanks for your encouraging words, Patricia! Makes me feel even better about my decision to embrace lime green this fall!

    1. Well, I’m glad to know we share a united front on this issue! 😉 And thanks for the kind words on the fall banner; it was a long mental process to finally get there (a lot of rough drafts in my head), but I am so pleased with how it turned out.

  14. You should do whatever makes you happy. It looks great! This is the first year that I’ve added purple to the mix and I’m loving it.

    1. Thanks for the affirming words, Glenna. And I love that you’re incorporating purple into your fall decor. 2007 was my purple YEAR! I even bought purple boots that I still rock with pride today. (I blame it on the fact that I was a grad student at NYU, surrounded by purple flags all day…I was brainwashed! Ha ha.)

  15. I really loved how your approached this challenge, Lauren! Decorating for the seasons is all about evoking feelings and I loved your little story, my NY gal! Thanks so much for participating in this challenge and for all your help along the way. That was a lot of fun : ]

    1. Glad to hear you’re doing your part to shake things up over in your household. I have a teal frame with an autumn printable that I bet would fit right in to your home decor these days…. And hooray for our shared love of Bird by Bird. I read it years ago, but have returned to it often, and it always inspires me! Love that Anne Lamott!

    1. Okay, “glam” is totally the route I would have gone if lime green hadn’t been calling my name so profusely. I love me some bling! Especially paired with black and gold. So chic! I need to pop by and visit you to see what you’ve been up to lately…ahhh, I’m so behind in my blog reading, it’s embarrassing. {Hangs head in shame.} 🙂

    1. Ha ha. Jeanie, I don’t think I could hate anything in your house…even if it was orange-orange-everywhere! I’m just such a Jeanie fan!

And thanks for supporting me in my lime green endeavors. I feel the love!

  16. Such a cute banner! I know what you mean about the color switch. (I’m limiting the Autumn orange in my home, too.) I pulled out all my orange pumpkins to decorate with and ended up putting them all away a few days later. (Maybe closer to Thanksgiving…)

    1. Good for you for following your instincts, even though all of Pinterest practically declared it fall mid-August. Ha ha. And I’m sure as soon as Halloween is over, we’ll start seeing Christmas everywhere. Can’t we just live in the moment, people? Lol. Okay, I’m done with my rant.

Thanks for your sweet comment, Miss Charming. Twas fun to hop around today and see what everyone else came up with for this campaign…yourself included!

    1. Thanks, Vidya! I’m glad that they’re working together FOR the new season and not against it. I’m still flexing my muscles when it comes to decorating and styling; it’s not an area in which I feel super confident, but post by post, inch by inch, I think we’re making progress. Looking forward to visiting your blog later to see what you came up with!

  17. Lime green is my favorite!!! I love those throw pillows {I NEED those pillows!} and that tape is so awesome! I am totally feeling fall in your living room. I’m still in the stage where fall decor means “stuff I don’t have time for.” We are starting to think about buying a house, so maybe I will feel more inspired {when I’m all nest building}. <3 you, Lauren! Hugs!!!

    1. Really!? I love that you’re a lime green fanatic, Bethany! And if I could, I’d totally give you these pillows…or at least invite you over for cider and chit chat time on the couch, buried in pillows!

And I think that’s a-okay that fall decor isn’t on your radar right now. Sometimes there are more important things…like working a full-time job and planning a WEDDING! Yeah, it took me nearly four years of marriage before the nesting instinct really hit me…but when it hit, it hit hard. Ha ha. So watch out! 😉 Hugs back.

  18. I love your home 🙂 I use navy blue as our “neutral” and it seems to work well with every season, from the brights in the summer like yellows and pinks, to the reds and greens of Christmas, and everything in between. I prefer bright colors over the muted tones of autumn, so your lime green is right up my alley! Lovely!

    1. Thank you, Kirsten! It loves you back!

And I never before thought of navy as a “neutral,” but I can totally see it being a great base to build off of. Yes, it would allow the brights to pop and the more subtle colors to be complimented. Also, I think we’re going to be integrating more navy into our bedroom when we buy new bedding (we’re embracing the nautical bedroom theme), so I’m delighted to know that it’s a strong color choice! If Kirsten loves it, so do I!

    1. With a blog title like “My Love for Words,” it delights me to no end that you own “Bird by Bird.” Isn’t Anne Lamott brilliant and hilarious and vulnerable and inspiration…all at once? It has been fun to revisit some of my favorite chapters years after reading it the first time around. Wish we could be in an Anne Lamott book club together, Emily!

    1. Thanks, Elisa! Yes, if I ever I need to defend this color choice (in a court of law or otherwise), that photo is going to be my saving grace!

And come on by for a cozy cup of cider on our couch anytime, Elisa!
