25 Creative Solutions to Necklace Organization

So, it has been on my crafty to do list for a while now to come up with a creative solution for my necklace organization system…or rather, lack thereof.  Here’s what we’re dealing with, people:

The necklaces...before!

Yep.  They’ve been clumped together like that for about a year now.  It’s pretty much a 10 minute process to untangle that rat’s nest of necklaces in order to get my hands on one that I want.  (Cue the music.)

So, with that “system” in place, you can imagine often I’ve reached above our bathroom vanity to grab a necklace.  Yeaaaah, nada mucho.

It was high time to DIY this problem, and I finally took it on last week…garden tool style.  I give to you my new and improved necklace organization system (with some space for earrings, too).

Yep, that’s a metal rake.  And yep, you can do it, too!  Click here for the skinny.

Then, promise to come right back and explore the plethora of other ideas out there for taming your wild and ever-growing necklace collection.  You no longer need to relegate your necklaces to a dusty jewelry box or even worse, a bathroom vanity light fixture.  Soak up these creative solutions to necklace organization that I’ve rounded up from blogland.  Prepare to be inspired!

  1. This is such an awesome post! It gets my creative juices flowing! I’m starting to think I don’t have enough necklaces now since I want to try out all these amazing ideas. 🙂

    1. Aw, thanks, Cheryl! I’m so happy to hear that! You’ll have to let me know which ideas you do try out…so I can live vicariously through you!

  2. It’s the first time I’ve been here and I think these ideas are fantastic – I’ve recently moved into a smaller place and wow has it been a challenge sorting stuff out – hence, jewellery storage has been at the bottom of my list. I love all the ideas, particularly the rake and the twig, and funnily, when I saw the twig idea, I realised I’d already done it but used it to hang suncatchers for my craft market display, and I’ve moved into an apartment after having a garden so have a rake going spare haha. One thing I’d like to ask is about the use of power tools. Although I’ve done lots of creative, crafty stuff, my skills with power tools are negligent and was wondering if you knew of any ‘idiot’s’ site that could teach me step by painful step – ?

    1. Small spaces can be so tricky, can’t they? Have you explored the website apartmentherapy much? They have so many great ideas for working within small confines. And I love that you already have tackled the twig idea…and how perfect that you have an old rake on hand to spare! I think this DIY is calling your name, Maria…. 😉

And re: your question about power tools, have you explored Ana White’s site much? Or Pretty Handy Girl? They’re both two chicks who don’t shy away from using power tools, and I have a feeling they might have some tutorials to cover the basics. Good luck!

  3. Great round-up! Your rakish choice was adorable!
rak·ish1 (adjective)–having or displaying a dashing, jaunty, or slightly disreputable quality or appearance. “he had a rakish, debonair look”; synonyms: dashing, debonair, stylish, jaunty, devil-may-care

Additionally, I liked the crib-door jewelry box and the linen covered cork board. The hangar was simple and one I could actually do! If Mark was here to cut my rake I could do yours, too!
    Thanks for collecting these!

    1. Thanks for the explanation of “rakish.” That’s a word I don’t use nearly enough. And now, I know how to use it properly! I feel like it would describe someone like Mr. Gatsby quite well.

And I appreciate you exploring the collections and sharing your faves; glad you found a few that might actually work for you!

    1. Yours turned out wonderfully, Megan! And I love how much space it gives you for a whole army of necklaces. Who knew cup hooks could double as “bling” hooks?! Thanks for sharing, girl!

  4. Soo many good ideas for necklace organization!!! You hit me spot on: my necklaces are relegated to a dusty (VERY dusty) jewelry box. And I can’t even remember the last time I wore a necklace. 🙁 I’m definitely pinning this one as a project to do in the near future. I really like your rake idea…it has an organic feel and is good for me who doesn’t want something too huge and overwhelming.

    1. I know the dusty jewelry box all too well. (Sadly, I know dust in general all too well. But that’s another story.) I’m happy to say that having my new rake organizer really has encouraged more necklace wearing. I probably wear necklaces 2-3 times a week now, whereas before it was zilch. Keep your eyes peeled for a rusty old rake on the side of the road or at a garage sale. If mine had been more rustic to start, I probably wouldn’t have even spray-painted it…so all you’d really need is a dry-wall screw in the wall or heavy-duty nail, and voila! Instant organization!

Watch out, Lisbeth’s jewelry box. Your dusty days are numbered!

    1. Of course, Lorraine! Thanks for allowing me to feature you and your stellar organization system. It adds so much creativity to the mix! I love it.

  5. You are a little genius! Fantastic round-up, too! Oddly enough, I have been experimenting with this very thing in our bedroom for about 2 months, and I have a system in place that is so not pretty, but is so convenient. Now I gotta make it pretty…. workin’ on it!

    1. Oooo! You have me intrigued, Thalita. I know that whatever it is, it is creative. And knowing you, you’ll have that system beautified in no time flat. It’s what you do best! Can’t wait to see it.

  6. What a lovely collection of beautiful ideas, people are SO creative! I especially love the thread spools idea (or “cotton reels” as we call them in the UK!)

  7. It’s like you knew I had a mess of necklaces that need organized or something 🙂 This is awesome…I know there will be one great idea here that will be perfect for my style. I can’t wait to check them all out!!!

    1. Ha ha. Perhaps it’s my sixth sense: knowing about tangled necklaces in jewelry boxes around the world! Ha ha. I’m so glad that this round-up is of use to you. You’ll have to keep me posted and let me know which solution you go with!

  8. Thanks for including my accordion rack display! This round up is giving me some more great ideas as well… I’m loving the rake and sewing spool ideas too! 🙂

    1. Of course, Erica! It was an honor to include it in the mix. Glad you like my rake and that you’ve found some other inspiration in this round-up. Cheers!

  9. You read my mind my friend….either that or you somehow spied the tangled nest of necklaces hiding in a random drawer of mine. Sadly, I was kinda liking the light fixture storage until I realized that was a before pic! Seriously, love the rake idea. That could be a super fun gift for someone who is both a necklace-phile and gardener. Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. I was joking about this with another reader, but I think I just have a sixth sense for sensing tangled necklace nests. It’s one of my gifts. Ha ha. And I love you liked my light fixture storage. I probably should have shown the whole shot down to the vanity where no man’s land lies. You might not be such of a fan of it then! (It’s the place where jewelry goes and never returns.)

And I like your idea of giving the rake necklace organizer who loves both necklaces and gardening…although I sort of hate gardening (it’s my fear of snakes and other creep crawlies), so by chopping off the handle, it sort of further separates me from the possibility of meeting my snake nemeses.

    1. No way! That’s too funny! I’ve had my eyes peeled for a random rake on the road-side trash piles for some time now. Too bad I wasn’t in your neighborhood, Allison! Also, we could have had coffee. 😉

Thanks for stopping by and for hosting such a fantastic linky party!

    1. It’s an honor to have you included in this mix! Thanks so much for sharing your awesome jewelry storage idea in the first place. It really gripped me when I saw it for the first time; job well done.

    1. Of course! Thanks for allowing me to share it with my readers. Ha ha. And already, I’ve worn necklaces more this week than I probably did for all of last month. This project was definitely long overdue!

  10. Great inspiration for hanging necklaces and organizing jewelry! My fav has got to be from my most favorite creative, think out of the box blogger! That would be you Lauren! Love the garden rake idea. It’s looks marvelous darling! I love some of the others too. The driftwood holder would look fab with my lean towards coastal cottage chic decor and the cup holder is sweet!

    1. You are too generous with your words, Sandy. Thank you! I wish I had thought of that out-of-the-box idea myself, but seeing the inspiration on Pinterest, I knew I had to give it a try. And the driftwood holder is one of my personal faves, too! I’ve always been a sucker for the coastal cottage chic decor look! (And it’s another reason why I SO love drooling over the photos on your blog.)

  11. Hi Lauren. This is a great roundup of different ways to display jewelry. This is something that I struggle with as I don’t have a good spot in my closet. Thank you for including the dress form. It looks so cute in the closet with all of the the vintage pins on it.

    1. It sure does look cute! How could I not include it? 😉 And that’s a bummer that your closet space isn’t really conducive to jewelry storage. I wonder if hanging something on your bedroom or bathroom wall might work better? Especially if it looks cute and can be part of the decor!

  12. We just moved and I have been trying to decide how best to store/display my jewelry. I was very inspired by all of the ideas in this post. My goal this week is to get a system in place and finish untangling all of my necklaces from the move!

    1. That’s a great goal, Amy! I had to untangle my necklaces in order to hang them on the rake…in fact, they were so tangled up, I contemplated cutting them apart (and thus ruining several of them). Thankfully, I have a husband who delights in untangling things, so he worked on the rat’s nest and finally got everything untangled. Now, I’m determined never to let it get that bad again. Best of luck as you decorate and organize your new space, Amy! You’ll have to let me know what you end up doing for your jewelry storage.

    1. Isn’t that fun? I don’t really consider myself the kind of person who would have a buck’s bust on my wall…but a chic white one with necklaces hanging from its antlers? Yes, please.

    1. Sharon! I never thought to use a rake to organize scarves…but you’re right! It would work wonderfully. Might need to go out and buy a second rake now! Ha ha.

    1. Thank YOU for your inspiration solution to jewelry organization! And thanks for the pin-love, too, McKenzie! I appreciate it.

  13. These are great ideas…but I never ‘made’ anything to keep my necklaces. I finally figured out that my perfectionist self would never do it…but I love my necklaces, and have lots of them…I definitely needed to do something! I have sliding mirrored doors on my closet, and I took the command stick on hooks that have the medium size metal hook and stuck them up in two layers on the inside of my closet door. The first layer is about seven inches (or so) above the second, and they hold my shorter necklaces on the top and my long necklaces on the bottom. I *love* it! I still have more than one necklace on a hook…most of them hold two or three…but they are so easy to get to and see! I also like that they are out of sight…since there is no real way to make them look perfectly organized, I like that I don’t look at the visual clutter all the time.

    1. Your storage solutions sounds great, Meredith! I can see it now…. Reason #502 why command hooks are awesome!

    1. Yes, it’s those huge, bulky (but oh so cute) necklaces that do limit what you can do with jewelry storage…but the towel rod and shower curtain hooks would work wonderfully for such a dilemma! I think you know what needs to be done now, Kelly. {Do it, do it, do it!}

    1. Ha ha. Actually, the idea of a “bicycles rake” was rather inspiring to me! Gave me a slew of new ideas…so thanks!

  14. LOVE IT! What a great idea! You have such amazing creativity…I am so blessed to have found your blog! I have a drawer full of lovely jewelry that sits in mounds of twisted piles, now I have no excuse for not getting it organized! And….it uses an old rake head that I was going to send to its final resting place, now it will be on my wall!

    1. Kristine, have I ever told you that I think you’re a great writer? Even just reading the descriptive language in your comment, the English teacher in me perks up and I want to leave you a comment in the margin of your paper saying, “vivid imagery!” I can see those mounds of twisted piles of jewelry now…as well as that old rake head coming to the rescue!

  15. JACKPOT!! How did you know I needed this? I was just cleaning up my dresser the other day and came upon my tangled pile of necklaces that had been sitting there in a heap for months…I hadn’t had time to search pinterest yet for ideas for hanging them. Now I don’t have to! I love the corkboard ones and the white one that’s also a shelf. Perfect!! Thanks so much! 🙂

    1. Ha ha. Guess I’m not the only one with tangled necklace problems! So glad that I might have saved you some time getting sucked into Pinterest with this post. Can’t wait to see what you end up with, Nancy. I know it will be creative and lovely, whatever you do!

    1. Knowing you, you could whip up your own creative necklace organizer in no time flat! Let me know when you do and I will SO add it to this round-up. 😉

    1. Thanks, Bethany! For your comment here and on Or So She Says. And I cannot wait to see what you come up with for your earring organization. Knowing you, that collection will only continue to grow, so you definitely need something EPIC. Will keep my eye out for ya!

  16. Awesome! I like the hidden ones, because I like the idea of the jewelry being hidden from public view, like in the bathroom or closet (master). I have mine on a Claire’s jewelry thing that I spray painted silver (as opposed to blech neon blue) and also on 3M hooks.

    1. Love the power of spray paint! And hopefully, if I end up with a bigger closet someday, I can move my rake there…although for now, it sort of doubles as wall decor, which our bathroom can most definitely use! Ha ha.

    1. Thanks, Marilyn! And we must be twins with our love of driftwood and textured pieces. I think that’s a part of my affinity for pallet projects, too. Something about it just speaks to me….

  17. Type set trays – that’s what they are. I see them, I want them, but I never know how to look for them. Yup, that’s on my Want list now. Not sure what I’ll use it for yet, but that comes later, right? Great roundup!

    1. Ha ha. Yes! Now you get your Google and eBay and Craigslist search on! (And after seeing your card catalog, it’s no surprise to me that you like type set trays, too. They’re like second cousins.)

  18. Oooh I am loving that rake! So purty! I never would have thought to use a rake to organize jewelry, but it works so well! One of the first projects I did after I discovered Pinterest was the towel rod/shower curtain hook necklace organizer, and I still love it! Thanks for the roundup of wonderful ideas, Lauren! Have a great week!

    ~Abby =)

    1. I’m glad you approve, Abby! And that’s awesome that you’ve got your jewelry organized with a towel rod and shower curtain hooks. That one seems really practical and easy to install! Thanks for the wishes, and hope your week is wonderful, too, friend!
