Gender Neutral Onesies & Free Cut Files | The Thinking Closet

Spring is a season for new life…and it seems like so many of my friends are having babies!  So, after having way too much fun with my rhinestone onesies, I thought I’d try my hand at some heat-transfer vinyl onesies.  Here are the three designs I came up with:

Gender Neutral Onesies & Free Cut Files | The Thinking Closet

All three designs happen to be gender neutral, which is grrrrreat for those couples who love a good surprise…or for those congratulatory gifts early on in a pregnancy.  Two of these were created with very specific people in mind…but I’m guessing that you might be drawn to at least one of these designs and want to use it on a future onesie project

Free Cut File

So, I’m offering all three designs fo’ FREE to my “Thinking Closet kindreds.” Click HERE to download the .studio files. {Fine print: these designs are for personal use only and are not to be used for commercial purposes. Thanks!}

The first one is a very simple n’ sweet design.  I mean, who doesn’t love an aqua pachyderm?  My favorite part about it is the surprise on the back.

The second design was created with my friend Laura in mind.  We met through theatre at Wheaton College and ended up becoming fast friends and roommates junior year.  She is such a gifted writer, director, and actor that I had to celebrate her theatrical side with this onesie, as well as give a nod to the classic I LOVE NY logo.  She and her hubby Jordan are due to have their first baby in early April, so I best ship this off to Illinois soon!  (Fonts used: A Typewriter For Me & Reklame Script Regular DEMO.)

My dear friend from high school, Lina, and her husband Carlo are pregnant with their first child, also due this April.  Lina’s family hails from Sicily, and Carlo is Sicilian himself!  I had the privilege of vacationing there back in college.  We stayed in Lina’s family’s home and toured the island in Carlo’s car…winding up and down those mountains multiple times a day.  My heart was immediately taken by the romantic town of Taormina, and I am determined to get back there someday with Mark.  Anyway, it only seemed fitting to celebrate the land that they love in a onesie custom-made for their little one.  Lina is also a language teacher, so a play on the concept of “a is for apple” seemed apropos .  (Font used: Janda Closer To Free.)

So, there you have it!  It’s a onesie party – – boys…girls…genders-still-yet-to-be-revealed…everyone is invited!

If you have questions about how to work with heat transfer vinyl, I recommend checking out this tutorial by Linda from Craftaholics Anonymous.  It was extremely helpful to me as I ventured into the uncharted waters of heat transfer vinyl.  Key things to remember:

  • Flip your design horizontally (so that it cuts backwards).
  • Load your heat transfer vinyl shiny side down.  (I used a cutting mat with mine since I purchased my H.T.V. from Pick your Plum, and it only had a width of 8″.)
  • Use a Silhouette hook tool to weed your design.  Without it, I would have been up a creek without a paddle.
  • When ironing (cotton setting), lay a piece of fabric on top of your design.  Press down firmly for a minute or more.  If when you start to peel away the plastic the vintl is not set, continue ironing.
  • Washing instructions: machine wash and dry inside out.

  1. After downloading the Elephant Pattern, i am not able to open it on my computer.
I assumed it was going to be a pdf file but it is not.
Instead It is a “Studio File” which I have never heard of ???
Do you have it in a “PDF file version? Or can you please tell me how to open this file on my PC. Thanks in advance
    Sandy

    1. I’m glad that you’re interested in downloading the Elephant cut file! Yes, the design was created using a free software program called Silhouette Studio (for use with Silhouette digital craft-cutting machines). Here’s a link where you can download the free software: http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/software

As for converting to pdf, I was curious so I did some digging. Found a forum where someone shared this solution:

I convert to PDF in order to open and modify/cut from Illustrator:
      – Install a PDF creator program – I use the free program PrimoPDF
      – Open or create your .studio file, select the shapes you want to convert
      – Open the Line Styles dialog, check the “Print Lines of Selected Shapes” box
      – Print your design to the PDF printer – this should generate a PDF file for you
      – I then open the PDF file in Illustrator and work from there

      Good luck, Sandra!

    1. Thanks, Jessica! That one is definitely a fan favorite and clearly one of mine because I’ve held onto it since writing this post and have yet to give it away. Tee hee.

  2. So I’m showing my mom this project and she says, ‘oh can I buy that?!’ and I said no Mom, you need to make it. And she said ‘oh no I can’t do that’. hahahaha

    1. Ha ha! Your Mom is too funny. And she doesn’t give herself enough credit. If this woman can survive teaching high school English for as many years as she did, she can do ANYTHING in my mind.

  3. These turned out adorable! I have yet to try heat transfer vinyl but I think I might! These are too cute not to make!

    1. Congrats on the new Silhouette! You’re going to have a field day with that machine, let me tell ya. I’ve never worked with a Cricut, but the general consensus online is that there’s just so much more you can do with a Silhouette. Hope you enjoy it!

And thanks for your not one, not two, but three comments on my blog! So great to “meet” you, Laura Jane, and I’m following back on Google+, Pinterest, and Twitter!

  4. Newest follower here! I found you through the blog hop. You have a super cute blog, I can’t wait to read more. You can find me at meandmr.com

    -Melanie @meandmr.com

    1. Thanks for the follow, Melanie! Just visited your lovely corner of the blog-o-sphere, and I absolutely love your photos…you have a real eye for beauty and design. Looking forward to exploring Me and Mr. more!

    1. Glad you approve of the elephant, as well! He/she’s a cutie. (Gender neutral, right?) I’d love to see you rockin’ an adult onesie. For some reason, I feel like you could pull it off on Christmas morning. And yes, I’m sure the Drama Mama design will be replicated on many an occasion. So much drama! Just need the mamas!

  5. I LOVE THESE! I’m trying to figure out to use them for a onsie for Itty Bitty and a big girl shirt for myself so we match….lol I want to do a Drama Mama and Drama Baby pair – but Drama Baby doesn’t rhyme as well…hmmmmm will have to think on this one 🙂

    1. Oooo, I love the idea of a Drama Mama and baby matching shirts. Hmmm…maybe you could do Drama Mama and Broadway Baby? There’s a Stephen Sondheim song called “Broadway Baby,” plus the alliteration allows it to flow trippingly off the tongue. If you make them, you gotta take pics and let me know!

  6. Wow! I’m blown away with your migration to WordPress! Your new blog design rocks! You just blow me away with your savvy technical skills.

Also, these little onesies are adorable! No little ones in our family right now but I’ll pass this info on. Too bad I bought the cricut machine a few years ago. I’d love to have the sillouhette machine. Your blog is fun, inspirational, gorgeous and VERY easy to navigate. Love, love, love all the changes!

    1. Whoah, way to give me a major confidence booster, Sandy! Thanks for your kind remarks. I’m so glad you approve of the new design and layout…and that you find it easy to navigate. That was my high hope!

  7. I don’t have one of those machines but I have downloaded that elephant pattern just incase. It is cuuuute! Plus I am a big fan of elephants 😀 You have some very lucky friends to be receiving these, but I feel I should probably warn you, they will almost certainly want MORE!!! xXx

    1. That makes me so happy that you downloaded it, even though you don’t have a Silhouette…yet! And I could see you doing some crazy awesome stuff with one, adding personalized heat transfer vinyl or rhinestones to the garments you make. 😉

      1. To be honest I had never even heard of a silhouette until you started posting about them. it is certainly something I can see me getting in the future but I have a whole sewing room full of crafty bit I need to use up first. you certainly seem to be having fun using it. I’m loving all of your creations xXx

  8. Um, I feel like a slacker that it took me this long to read this post! I am pretty excited for a Lauren original design!!! I can’t wait to send you a picture with our little one modeling it!!!! Love you!

    1. Laura you are anything but a slacker! I’m delighted that you read it, though, and I’m getting ready to package your little giftie up and send it off (hopefully by tomorrow). Can’t wait to see that photo, and even more so, I can’t wait to meet baby Laurdan! Sending so much love to you, friend.

  9. Lauren, these are adorable. When I was pregnant with my first child, one of my dance parents hand-painted a tiny t-shirt with the phrase “Keeping Mama on her toes…” and an image of a ballerina bear wearing pointe shoes. It is still something I treasure. I am sure your friends will adore these thoughtful and creative gifts. You are just such an inspiration. Congratulations on your continuing success with your blog upgrade. I am so proud of you! (I am telling you. The more you show the Silhouette projects, the more I want one.)

    1. “Keeping Mama on her toes…” I can see it now! How special! Those personalized gifts mean so much, don’t they? That shirt reminds me of one I had as a kid. It wasn’t made just for me, but it sort of felt like it was. It read, “I’d rather be dancing.”

And I’m glad you’re lovin’ these Silhouette projects. I wouldn’t put it past you to find a used Silhouette machine on Craigslist. You’ve just got that level of Craigslisting ability.

    1. Thanks, Jessica! Isn’t “pachyderm” a fun word? Though I usually need spellcheck to write it, it’s a fun one to say. Takes me back to the early days of watching the movie, “Dumbo.” “Pink elephants on parade, here they come….”

  10. Gender Neutral is great! I don’t have kids yet (and there’s still plenty of time…!), but I would like to educate my kids kinda neutral. If a girl wants blue, she should get it and if a boy wants pink, he should get it! I think, it’s more important, what the kids want than what is the usual and tradition!

Anyway… Yours are really cute! I love the elephant! 🙂

    Love, Midsommarflicka

    1. Yes! My favorite color was blue for many years during my childhood. It’s great to let kids choose the colors they are drawn to and not push on them the ones society says they should like. I also advocate that real men wear pink!

    1. You’re so welcome! I visited your blog and saw that you share files from your creations, too. Yay! I’ll have to stop back and download them when I’m on my laptop and not my phone…and you’ve inspired me to try flocked h.t.v. next time! So cool.

    1. To employ hyperbole, Marni, you are going to DIE. After visiting your blog and checking out what you’ve already been able to create without a Silhouette, I can only imagine what we’ll see from you WITH one!

  11. That little elephant number had me “ooooh”-ing and “aaaaah”-ing every time I saw it! You are going to have the most stylish looking babies one day!! And your friends? MEGA LUCKY to have your crafty self styling their little ones!

  12. these are too cute Lauren! would’ve love to get these before my son was born; I only got white ones! loving the blue elephant but my favourite is the “I love my drama mama”; too cute! Oh! how badly I want a Silhouette now (because of you!) 🙂

    1. Thanks, Ingrid! I’m sure if you got your hands on a Silhouette, the crafting possibilities would be endless. I’d love for you to win one of the Silhouette giveaways they’re always having (I would ALWAYS enter those…and in fact, that was how I first told my husband about the Silhouette, which he later surprised me with for Christmas). Then, we could be Silhouette buddies!

  13. These turned out so cute! I told you that you had to iron on the stuff for longer – hehe. I think the rhinestone setting would be strangely therapeutic for me too, lol. Did you have any go in upside down?

    1. Thanks, Jacquelyn! Oh yes, a few did go in upside-down, but I used the brush to pop ’em out and roll ’em in the right way. That part took a few minutes, but I didn’t mind it!

    1. Ha ha. I’m sure! And I’m chuckling right now because I have more baby-related posts to come…so your suspicions are only going to increase. But I raise my right hand and solemnly swear…unless there’s a surprise even I don’t know about!

  14. Love the family-specific ones as well as the elephant!! Congratulations to you for these great designs and finished products and to all your friends who are expecting little “onesies”!

  15. These are so cute Lauren! Especially loving the ‘Drama Mama’ one — have several friends that would be a great fit for if and when they have babies 🙂
