Capturing Memories with One Second of Video Everyday

One Second Everyday Video Diary: The Complete "How To" Guide for Beginners + Insider Tips | Here's how I use the 1se app to capture memories and document our lives in snippets of 1 second video everyday. Plus, you can check out the mash-up of footage from my first year of using the app! It goes by in a flash!

Well folks, I did it.  I completed one year of my “One Second Everyday” Video Diary project.  Everyday for 365 consecutive days, I shot one second of video from our lives and mashed it together into a 7 minute, 19 second video.

The first clip I took in the car, 31 weeks pregnant, the book *And Baby Makes Three on my lap.  The last clip I took this past Monday of my grandfather lovingly holding our 10 month old daughter Juniper on his lap.  As the seconds of footage fly by, I watch her grow up before my eyes.

I understand why every parent says to us, “It goes so fast….”  It’s because it does.

And yet there’s something else I learned during my “One Second Everyday” project this past year.  One second can say a lot!  It can tell a story, evoke an emotion, or take me right back to that moment on June 15th when I crept up on Mark soaking up some sun on the dock with our 10 day old.  Or September 16th when Junie discovered her belly laugh.  Or October 29th when we put a pumpkin beanie on her head and made every single person we passed by smile as wide as a mile.

“How we spend our days is of course how we spend our lives.”  —Annie Dilliard

And it’s important to me to document the ordinary and extraordinary moments from our everyday lives.  Not only to celebrate the present, but to preserve memories that we’ll treasure in the future.  I may not have a ton of time right now to scrapbook or journal…

…but one second of video everyday?  That I can do.

And if you’re excited to learn about the smartphone app I use to collect my seconds as well as my insider tips, stick around!  But first….

Our Year in 365 Seconds

I give to you the short movie of our year in 365 (ish) seconds!  Take a sip of something yummy and open those eyes wide.  Because it really does flash by!

How to Use the “1 Second Everyday” App

I first learned about the practice of recording one second of video a day from the movie Chef.  And then I discovered the “1 Second Everyday” app from Elise Blaha Cripe’s Instagram.  The app makes the process of editing and mashing together your seconds easy-as-pie.

Here’s the step-by-step below, so you can use it, too.

{Note: The app is constantly being updated, so the following screenshots are accurate as of the publishing of this post.  I have found the app to be extremely intuitive, so don’t let intimidation hold you back.}

Step 1.  Buy the App

Right now, the app is $4.99 for iPhone devices and free for Android devices—money well spent when you consider how quick and easy this app makes the process of preserving memories.

Step 2.  Shoot your video!

If you want to carefully select your second from a longer clip, you can use your phone’s camera app for shooting video like I do.

Plus, you can check out the mash-up of footage from my first year of using the app! It goes by in a flash!

Or for the easy route that will eliminate the editing in step 3, you can open up the app and select the camera icon in the bottom left hand corner.

You can shoot a second of video with one tap of the teal button or hold it down for a longer clip, and the app will automatically select that last second you shot.  I’ve never tried this before, but now I’m excited to experiment with it.

Step 3.  Choose your second.

For the current day and any past day where you recorded video on your phone, you’ll see the day highlighted in yellow on the calendar.

Click that day, and you’ll have access to that day’s footage and can select the clip from which you want to pull a second.

You can watch the full video by using the play and stop button atop the large-frame video.  Then, you can use the controls on the bottom editing bar to choose your “second.”  Whatever is in the yellow frame is the second that is highlighted.  You can view that second by hitting the tiny play button within it.  And to move forward or backward in the video, just drag the footage found to the right of the yellow frame.  If you want to tweak the second by inching it forward or backward a smidgen, you can use the teal arrow buttons on the far left and right.

It took WAY longer to type out those instructions than it would for you to complete the task in the app.  So, fiddle around with it a few times, and you’ll know the ins and outs!

Super Second: This feature I only learned about after several weeks with the app, but the + sign inside the yellow frame will increase the length of your second to a super second, which is 1.5 seconds.  That’s why my 365 days of footage ended up at 7 minutes 19 seconds instead of 6 minutes 5 seconds.  There were a few clips that really benefitted from the longer air-time, so I embraced this feature!

Once your yellow frame is exactly where you want it, you can “snip” that second to the app by using the orange scissors icon on the upper right.

You’ll see the formerly-yellow box on your calendar is now filled in with a thumbnail image from the video.  That day’s documentation is done!

Forgot to take footage one day?  No problem.  Here are four potential solutions:

  • Skip it! When you export your mash-up, it will only mash-up the days for which you have selected seconds. So, the finished piece will still be fast and seamless. And a missed day here or there is practically unnoticeable.
  • Use a photo instead of a video. Those will show up in your options for the day as well as video. The app will use the “Ken Burns” effect and zoom in on the image like it would in a video slideshow.
  • Import footage from a friend or family member’s device. Once you add it to your camera roll, it will show up in the app. I’ve done this many-a-time.
  • Import footage from another day. There were a handful of times throughout the year that I forgot to snap a video during the day…as did Mark. So, I gave myself grace to pull footage from a nearby day. The app lets you do this by selecting the FLUX icon in the upper right of the snippet selection window. Easy!

Step 4.  Export a Mash-Up

When you’re ready to “mash-up” your seconds together into a video, select the PLAY icon in the lower right corner of your calendar view.

There you can select to mash-up the following:

  • All snippets in My 1SE
  • Preset i.e. 7 Days
  • Custom

For a “custom” mash-up, you just select your start-date and end-date, then hit the “Finish” button, and the app will mashup those snippets into one video.

If you select “SAVE,” the video will save within the app and to your camera roll for easy sharing on social media.  All clips will feature the date very inconspicuously in the bottom corner and the 1se branding at the end of the video.

Insider Tips

CREATING A HABIT:

Probably the biggest challenge of this entire project was remembering to capture video each day.  Here’s what I recommend you do to create a habit:

  • Start now. Don’t wait for the perfect time to begin this project.  I knew I wanted to document Juniper’s first year of life using the app, but rather than wait until she was born to begin, I started a few months prior.  That way, by the time our bundle of joy had arrived, I had already developed a habit of capturing footage.
  • Set a daily notification on your phone. The app itself has notifications you can turn on, but I preferred to set a recurring notification in my iPhone’s built-in Reminders App. It pops up everyday at 3:00 p.m. If I have completed the second for that day, I’ll close the reminder, and it disappears. If not, I leave it there, and it reminds me every time I check my phone. The daily reminder has been the KEY to my success with this project and kept me consistent. Also, I pretty much have ALL notifications turned off on my phone except this one, so it really stands out.
  • You can pre-plan your seconds.  When I am filling out my day planner for the week, if I see a few special events during which I’d like to capture a second, I write a little “1se” next to the event or put in a special notification on my phone as a reminder. This is a tip for the type As. But if this overwhelms you, let spontaneity be your guide.

I created a notification on my phone to remind me to capture my "one second" for that day! This was the key to my success at turning this documentation project into a daily practice.

VIDEOGRAPHY:

When I was first starting to use the app, I took a few pointers on videography from a blog post by Elise Blaha Cripe that proved extremely helpful.  Check out her full post HERE.  But here are the golden nuggets:

  • Shoot in landscape view (holding your phone horizontal) if you want to fill the full frame. This is easy to forget when you’re shooting on a phone, since we tend to hold it in portrait mode. But I’ve made it a habit to shoot horizontally since that’s the orientation of desktop computers and TVs where you’ll view your mash-up. If you select your second from a video shot in portrait mode, it’s not the end of the world! You’ll just see two black bars on either side of the video.
  • Hold the camera stationery.  Because a second is so short, often the best videos are ones where the camera remains still and the subjects are moving. It minimizes motion sickness for the viewer.

And a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  • A mini-tripod can work wonders for flat lay shots. Or shots where you want to capture yourself or both of your hands. Most of my Journaling Bible shots were done using this phone tripod I nabbed on Amazon for $8.99.
  • Invite others to be a part of your project.  Don’t be embarrassed to ask a friend or stranger to shoot your “second” for that or day or be included in your video.  Just share a bit about the project you’re working on and prepare for their faces to light up with excitement to help you carry it out.  I’ve gotten more and more courageous with this one as the project has gone on, and I’ve captured some extra special moments as a result.

A big takeaway from Cesar Kuriyama, the app creator himself, that I heard on Episode 83 of Elise Gets Crafty:

  • Not every shot needs to be beautiful or make sense to the viewer.  Cesar shared in the interview that only he knows the context of each second from his videos.  What might look awesome to the viewer could have zero meaning to him and what might appear to be a boring shot might hold deep significance for him, such as a clip of the side of a wall he shot after a meaningful phone call with a loved one. Remember this is your video diary first and foremost.

IMAGE QUALITY:

If image quality is important to you, there are a few things you can do to capture crisp, bright video:

  • Shoot in natural light.  This is probably the number one thing you can do to improve video quality.  However, I sacrifice image quality all the time to capture a special moment to me…such as a birthday dinner with a friend, enjoying chocolate fondue together in a candlelit restaurant.
  • Adjust your smartphone video settings.  I recently learned from my friend MichelleHickey.Design that you can amp up video quality on your iPhone by tweaking your “Photos & Camera” settings.  Set your camera to record in 1080 HD at 60 fps for the highest quality.  But be forewarned, these will take up a lot more space on your phone than the default of 1080 HD at 30 fps.
  • Use your rear-facing camera.  Typically, the front-facing camera used for selfies produces significantly lower quality video than the rear-facing camera.  So, if you are recording a video selfie, consider using your mini-tripod with the rear-facing camera.  (I don’t usually remember this one.)
  • Use airdrop when importing videos from a friend’s phone.  This will maintain the original video quality whereas sending the video via text or email can downgrade the quality.

INSPIRATION:

There were days in the beginning of this project especially when I struggled to find a good second of video to shoot.  So, I created a list of 50 video clip ideas for those days when inspiration is lacking.  And I am offering it up as a FREE download for you, dear reader, so you can tack it to a bulletin board or save it as a screenshot to your phone for when you need a jumpstart.  I hope you continue to add to the list on the back of the sheet as ideas strike. Just CLICK HERE to access it!

Grab a FREE printable download of my list of 50 ideas for your "1 Second Everyday" videos (for when you need a spark of inspiration). Plus, check out the post for my tips and tutorial for using the 1SE app!

SHARING ON SOCIAL MEDIA:

I choose to share my snippets with friends and family on social media in two week segments.  Some do weekly.  Others do monthly.  Or you might opt to never share them publicly!  But if you do share, here are a few insider tips:

  • Create your own hashtag.  I created the #Lanker1se hashtag so that when someone clicks on it on Instagram or Facebook, they are whisked away to a gallery of all of my 1se videos from past weeks.  It’s a fun way to stay organized.
  • Use shared hashtags.  If you enjoy sharing your videos with others (including the app creators), here are a few of my favorite hashtags: #1secondeveryday, #dailyvideo, #dailyvlog, #monthstermash, #1SE, #1SEme.  That last hashtag grants permission for the app creators to re-share your video on the app’s Instagram account.
  • Document detail in your captions.  After Juniper was born, I decided to start writing down short descriptions for each second.  I knew that one day, these memories would become foggy.  So, it’s a way for me to document the backstory of these short seconds.  And it gives my friends and family more of a detailed glimpse into our daily lives.  (Click HERE to see an example from one of my Instagram posts.)  I enjoy writing, so this is a fun bi-weekly exercise for me, but if this overwhelms you, skip it altogether.  Eat the hay and spit out the sticks with all of these insider tips!
  • Multiple birds with one stone.  If you want to share your videos to multiple platforms at once, you can link all of your social media accounts to Instagram within your settings.  Then, when sharing one of your videos to Instagram, you can select the Facebook or Twitter icons to auto-publish to those platforms, as well.

BACK-UPS:

As with everything precious, it’s wise to periodically back-up not only your phone, but to export a mash-up of all your clips and save them to another device.  I have iCloud photo and video back-ups of everything on my phone now for peace of mind.  But prior to that, I would export videos and airdrop them to my computer and Mark’s phone as insurance.  You wouldn’t want a lost phone or buggy app update to wipe away your preserved clips.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Q: What if I accidentally shot the video in portrait mode and want to crop it into a landscape video?

A: The iMovie app allows you to do that!

Q: What if I attempted to shoot in landscape mode, but it accidentally registered as a portrait video?  Or what if I rotated my camera mid-video?  Can I rotate my video to the proper orientation?

Yes you can!  Just download the Rotate & Flip app.

Q: What if I want to upload a video to Instagram in a square-crop?

Then, you’re like me!  I do this.  And I use an app to add white bars to the top and bottom called Square Ready Video.  {See the image below for an example or click HERE to visit my Instagram feed.}

To Close

I have to say, I was pretty stoked about this project when I first discovered the 1 Second Everyday app, but now that we’ve hit the 365 day mark…I am overjoyed that we took this on.  And we don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

I say “we” because it really became a team effort.  I can’t tell you how many times Mark returns home from one of his outdoor adventures with Junie to say, “I captured a great second for you today!  Where’s your phone?”

Watching our mash-up video from the past year was a profound experience for me.  Just seeing these seconds flying by with our baby girl’s face on the ultrasound screen one moment—then we’re holding her in our arms for the first time—and suddenly she’s crawling up a storm—well, it made me so very grateful to have this video time capsule of the year we went from a family of two to a family of three.

But apart from all the exciting baby milestones, I’m incredibly grateful for the footage of the ordinary moments. The game nights with Mark. The faces of friends who stopped by. The visits with family. The pages I read. The laughter we shared. The sunsets we watched.

“The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.”  —Jon Kabat-Zinn

And if I ever forget that, I have 7 minutes and 19 seconds of precious footage to remind me.

A NEW Way to Use the App

Update: In January 2020, I decided to use the 1 Second Everyday App to create a message of love and grace to those who–like me–struggle with feeling like we are enough. I call us the “Never Enough-ians,” and the video is our Manifesto! It’s only 31 seconds long, and I hope it will serve as an inspiration to you. Click HERE to watch it.

One Second Everyday Video Diary: A Manifesto for the Never Enough-ians! The inside scoop on my favorite app for capturing those precious moments that go by in a flash...plus a special video message I spelled out in the month of January: 31 words in 31 seconds. May it be an encouragement to those who struggle to feel like they are ENOUGH as they are.

  1. Oh this sounded like sooo much fun! My enthusiasm came crashing down when I looked at reviews for the latest version for Android. Now I’m grumpy. Evidently with the most recent version, previously enthusiastic users report compilation keeps failing AND they are losing clips. Like >poof GONE! (And looking up 5 star reviews, mostly 2-4 yrs old) so bummed!! 😢

    1. Oh noooooo! That’s a major bummer. I wouldn’t give up hope, though. Their team is continually working to improve the app, and I trust they’ll get the Android version up to snuff soon. They’d better!

  2. Hello,

I did it once but now i just cant find it!!! Where is the option for changing what is written on the videos? Hope they didnt cancelle it…

    1. I’m not sure…but definitely reach out to their customer support if you can’t find what you’re looking for! Best of luck, Martina.

  3. Hi Lauren!
Because of your adorable video, I have been using 1SE for the past month with my “babies” (ages 19 and 22…it goes fast!) and the fun my husband and I are having with our “empty nest”.
I do have a question. I’d like to do the whole year, but just received a notification saying that it was time to mash my month. I can’t find any info on this in the YouTube videos or online….do I have to mash each month? And can I then continue add to them? Or should I set my Timeline to “Custom” for a year and have it ask me at the end of the year? I’m just afraid if I mash them now, that it will be done.
Thanks so much for any help you can give me!
Junie is precious and I’ve so enjoyed watching her grow!
    Enjoy your day-
    Michelle 🙂

    1. So glad you’re enjoying the 1se app, too! Aw, I know…I’m sure our 20 month old will be 20 before we know it. Crazy! Ya know, I have my notifications turned off (I think they’re in the settings), so I don’t get those reminders. But to answer your question, you do NOT have to mash each month. Though I do recommend an occasional mash-up throughout the year that you save to a computer or iCloud in the rare case that you lose your phone or the app crashes (it has never happened to me, but there are always those horror stories). You can mash-up ALL your clips or a span of one year or one month…or any date range of your choosing. And you can do so for an unlimited number of times and continue to add clips. So, never fear! Hope that helps. Thanks for your warm words about Junie! All the best to you, Michelle.

  4. This is adorable. How did you get the video on Youtube w/ such great quality. My 1 Sec quality is horrible. I can’t figure out how to get it to upload in HD.

    1. After downloading the movie onto my phone, I opened it on my computer in iCloud (so as not to downgrade quality), and then put it together in HD using iMovie. Hope that helps!

  5. This is such a wonderful idea. I just startes ising the app and am wondering if it’s possible to edit the footage, when it’s done? Like adding a filter or adjusting color, so that the clips get the same tone?

    1. Ya know, right now the app doesn’t offer in-app edits, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they added that down the line. The app just hit #1 on iTunes paid app list, so big things are ahead. (I’m so excited for them!) But you could definitely edit your videos in another app first. I’ve done that before! Best of luck, Tine.

  6. THANK YOU for taking the time to write out explanations. I’ve been playing with the app for several days now, but the editing feature eluded me! Just COULD NOT figure out how to adjust the second/super-second. I’ve got it now, thanks to you 🙂

    1. I’m planning for forever, too! It’s one of those small investments of time that is going to breed such an awesome mash-up years from now. I still get chills watching the part of our mash-up where I go from pregnancy to Junie’s mama. Thanks so much for stopping by, Joan! Happy memory-making!

  7. Oh.my.god, Lauren. This is so cute!
Such an inspiration! Would you be able to tell me the software that you used to edit the video?
    Congrats!

    1. Thanks so much, Kathy! The app itself does all the editing for you…it’s super easy to do. And I just used iMovie to add the text at the beginning and end. Easy peasy! Have fun with it.

  8. Thanks for all the tips! They were all very helpful! I’m glad I stumbled upon this and you were JUST that enthusiastic about this great app. Now I wish there was a way to add some subtle background music.

    1. I’m so happy to hear that you’re keen on the app, too! It’s been such a wonderful tool for capturing memories for our family. As for adding subtle background music, you could probably use the iMovie app on your phone or computer to add some after exporting your mash-up. Enjoy!

  9. A precious treasure! So proud of you for doing this! Thinking how to incorporate this into my daily documentation of life! xxoo

    1. Thanks, Mama! You document life so well as it is…but it could be a fun way to document a special work event or family trip! They have a special feature for that function, too! (So you can have multiple clips in one day.) Love ya! See you soooooo soon!

    1. Aw, thanks for your sweet as pie comment, Sharon! You warmed my heart! Ha ha, yes, Mark likes to tote Junie around in all manner of crazy positions. She loves it! Yes, she’ll be talking before we know it. Ready or not, right?

  10. How cute was that! I could have watched 7 seconds a day or more! I about died when Dr. Daddy was carrying her backward on his shoulder. I’m sure my athletic Dad did the same with me a million years ago. Can’t wait to hear all Jennifer has to say, and I’m sure it will be soon. What a beautiful happy baby. You two did well – good genes.

  11. Lauren,

This is just one of the coolest apps and stories I’ve seen in a long time! Thank you so much for sharing!! I will definitely be downloading the app. Who can’t spare 1 second each day??? Thank you for making my day!!! I’m going to use this for capturing a second in a day of my business.

    1. Oh yay! I’m so glad it piqued your interest! Seriously, right? I have plenty of seconds for mindless web browsing and TV watching. Surely I can shoot one second of video by which to remember these precious days. Love your idea of using it for your business! You’ll have to tag me on Instagram if you share there so I can see some of your mash-ups! Enjoy it, Jodi.

  12. That – Was – Awesome!! Thanks so much for sharing. I have 2 toddlers and a teenager and I totally want to do this. I swear they’re bigger every day!! I don’t want to forget a moment.

    Thanks!

    1. Ha ha, I feel like I could totally hear your voice in your reply…especially in that first sentence! Thanks, Jeneen. Your family sounds like a fantastic bunch, and I have no doubt you’d have no shortage of special moments to document in your day. Excited for you to use the app to capture some of these precious memories you’re already making.
