5 Creative Ways to Use Contact Paper

Do you ever hap upon a blog where every – single – project just blows you away?  And you think, “There’s no way this person can be human!  It’s just TOO creative!” And then, you have the rare and distinct privilege of getting to meet this person, and you learn that not only are they human, but they’re as down to earth as you had dreamed.  And they just exude joy.  Well, this hypothetical situation is my reality.  And this gem of a gal is Katie.  And now you get to meet her, too….

Katie from Upcycled TreasuresHi everyone, I’m Katie, and I blog over at Upcycled Treasures and A Handcrafted Wedding. I love to mix vintage with new, modern with rustic, and re-imagine old or thrown out items.

I stalk The Thinking Closet on a regular basis and LOVE everything Lauren does {is there anything she can’t do?!}, so I’m beyond excited to be here today!

I have recently become obsessed with contact paper when working on projects because it’s affordable and versatile. Plus there are so many more options out there these days! Sure, it’s a great way to cover up or pretty up those shelves, but it’s time to think outside the drawers when it comes to contact paper.

5 creative ways to use contact paper:

1. Create an Accent Wall – Use the grid on the back of self-adhesive contact paper as a guide to cut out shapes or silhouettes you like. Then simply cut, peel and stick! This is how I was able to create a triangle accent wall in my home studio for less than $3!

2. Create inexpensive DIY wall art – I mixed wood grain contact paper, copper contact paper, and paint chips to create this geometric heart wall art for our master bedroom. I just cut out the shapes, peeled the backing off, and stuck them on a canvas. The contact paper is really forgiving too so you can even un-peel it and move it around a few times if you need to. You can use glue dots or Mod Podge to glue the paint chips down.

3. Decorate Terra Cotta Flower Pots – Jazz up boring planters or pots by cutting out shapes or designs you like and stick them right on the pot. Easy peasy.

4. Glam up invitations or business cards – I used contact paper on the back of my DIY business cards to add a pop of gold or copper in a budget-friendly way. You can also add it to the back of invitations to glam them up a bit, or add wood grain contact paper for a more rustic look.

5. Decorate upcycled candle jars or vases – I love to upcycle leftover candle jars to use for tea-light candles or to store craft supplies and other items. You can easily spruce up any jar or vase with contact paper and create a custom look that will match your home decor.

Can you tell I also have a crush on triangles right now? {Smile.} Well on the bright side, most of these projects can easily be tweaked or changed, which is another reason why I’m such a fan of contact paper crafts!

I hope you feel inspired to use contact paper in unconventional ways and create a space that is personal to you through your own projects and style!

  1. All of these are great ideas! I especially like adding the paper to the back of invitations and business cards. Thanks for sharing your experience with chronic pain. I’m a nurse and hadn’t known about the use of the acronym CRPS. I agree with Lisbeth…God bless you! Thanks for sharing here on Lauren’s blog.

  2. Wow…I have been ignorant over the many uses of contact paper until now. That accent wall blew me away! I never knew there were pretty kinds of contact paper, too. What a great post. And thanks for sharing the link about Katie’s encouraging journey with CRPS. God Bless you, Katie!

  3. Thank you so much for the kind words Lauren reading that intro totally made my day – you are way too freakin’ sweet!

Vidya – My sister-in-law gave me 2 rolls of copper she bought on sale from Zulily a while back, but you can find metallic contact paper on Amazon or InteriorPlace.com {where I bought my gold contact paper}, and several other online retailers 🙂

    1. Well, every word of it was true! Thanks for making me and my readers’ days with this out-of-this-world inspiring round-up. I’m uber excited to look out for Katie-style contact paper now. CONTACT PAPER ALL THE THINGS! 😉

    1. Hey Vidya! Thanks for the comment love. Just wanted you to know Katie answered your question in the comment below (since you won’t get an email alert about it). I was wondering the same thing, so I’m glad you asked! I, too, have never really seen contact paper like this before. 😉

Your comments make my day!
