Stamped “Word Search” Scarf: Video Tutorial

Of the four scarf tutorials I’m sharing during Scarf Week this week, this one started in a completely different part of my brain than it ended up (ah, the creative process…).  Does that happen to you, too?  But the scarf I ended up creating was far better and far more meaningful than any of my initial ideas.  And it allowed me to shower some belated anniversary love upon my hubby because this scarf was stamped just for him.  (Awwwwww.)

I give to you, my Stamped “Word Search” Scarf!

With a stamped "Word Search" scarf or bandana, you can create a gift of great significance for any person of any age In this video tutorial, learn how to transform any acrylic paint into fabric paint; and pick up a handy dandy method for stamping straight(ish) lines on a square scarf. Happy Scarf Week!

Now, I make some bold claims in today’s video tutorial…but they are all bold claims I fully stand behind.  I believe this scarf is one you could gift to any person in your life of any age.  It enhances literacy in littles…playfulness in adults…and I dare say it possesses the power to make someone feel seen and loved in ways that a gift card never could.  (Well…excepting a Starbucks gift card….  Tee hee.)

I’m already anticipating that you’re going to want to make some o’ these scarves, too (am I right?).  So, here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Supplies

  • plain kerchiefs / bandanas (bought mine for 99 cents at Hobby Lobby)
  • fabric paint or fabric medium and acrylic paint
  • paint cup / tupperware
  • small foam brush
  • chalking pen for marking fabric
  • foam stamps (the ones I used are sadly discontinued; but you can see the listing here!)
  • plastic tablecloth to protect your work surface
  • apron to protect your clothes
  • iron and ironing board
Fabric Medium allows you to turn ANY paint into fabric paint. It's magical!
I call this stuff “liquid gold.”  In the video, you’ll see why!

So, I ended up giving Mark his scarf this week, and he loved it.  He even wanted to hang it out just to display it; but I insisted that he wear it.  Break it in a little.  And so he did!

And I didn’t even have to prompt him…as predicted, he rocked his signature style: the headband look.  And even let me snap a photo or two of him in all of his scarfy glory.  This is a rare and precious opportunity, so I milked it for all I could!  Swing shot, please!
