How to Stain Wood with a HomeRight Finish Max Sprayer: Video Tutorial

You know the adage, “You can take the girl out of New York, but you can’t take New York out of the girl”?

Well, it’s true.  I may call Florida my home now, buuuuut…

I still crave a good hand-rolled bagel, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside.

I have an appreciation for public transportation and a special place in my heart for trains.

I treat sidewalks like the highway.  Pass on the left.  Smell the roses on the right.

I’m more excited about the hole-in-the-wall diner than a touristy restaurant chain.

And if I can get somewhere faster or do something more efficiently, I’m on it!  Time is money, people!

Well, when it came time to stain the wood for our Custom King Size Bed Frame project, the New York in me was determined to find a way to expedite what can often be a long, tedious, and back-breaking process.  I mean, the idea of bending over these boards with a paintbrush and rag all the live-long day was less than appealing.

Then, I had an “ah ha” moment as I remembered a product I had seen demoed at Haven Blog Conference last summer: the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer.

Could this be the solution to my staining woes?

Well, friends.  You’ll have to watch the video I made to find out!  {SPOILER ALERT: it was.  And this sprayer is my new best friend.}

Now, one last disclaimer before you dive into the video: remember, we worked on this bed project last fall, so don’t be thrown off by the pumpkin decor or how quickly I melt over the course of an hour (in Orlando, our highs were in the 90s this past October!).  And don’t get hung up on my overuse of the words, “alright,” “you guys,” and “viscosity.”  Clearly, I play favorites!

Now, let’s get to the good stuff.

I give you my video tutorial on How to Stain Wood with a HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer.  Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!

A Closer Look

Here’s a closer look at wood stain we used: Varathane “sunbleached” wood stain.  It lived up to its hype, drying in only one hour and giving us the beachy look we were going for in just one coat with the help of our Finish Max Sprayer.

And here are some more of the “after” photos of our completed bed.  In the close up shots, you can see how the sprayer lives up to its “Fine Finish” name!

The Bottom Line

Whether you’ve got New York in you or not, I think everyone would appreciate how the Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer tackles staining and painting thoroughly and efficiently.

My personal favorite features of the sprayer are:

  • That it’s airless.  It doesn’t require a fancy compressor.  Just grab an extension cord, and you’re good to go!
  • Its even coverage.  It gives the look of stain that has been painstakingly massaged into the wood…but without the hours upon hours of time or elbow grease!
  • Minimal overspray thanks to the adjustable nozzle.
  • How quickly I was able to get the job done.  In just one hour, I stained all exposed sides of the wood for our King bed frame and headboard.
  • Easy clean up!  I just dumped it all in a bucket with mineral spirits and water and used the brush to clean up the excess.  In 10 minutes, I was done!

I can’t wait to use my sprayer on upcoming staining and painting projects. In fact, I’ve already pegged our new hall table as my next victim DIY.  And you can bet my HomeRight sprayer will be in hand to help me get the job done while Alicia Keys and Jay-Z sing the song of my people.

“…there’s nothing you can’t do.”

  1. Hi Lauren,

Here it is, 3-1/2 years after you made this video, and I just watched it and learned! I’m about to tackle some old wood patio furniture and want to stain it using my new Home Right sprayer, but did not know if stain could be sprayed. Then, voila, I found your video! Thank you, thank you. I feel like the project is half-way done now that I’ve watched you do your bed frame and headboard.

Hope you’re still enjoying them, 3-1/2 years later!

  2. Hi Lauren,

First off, I love your blog! I plan on doing this entire project over the weekend and I wanted to ask you a question about the time lapse between purchasing the wood and the staining. Did you intentionally wait four months (October-Feb) between building the bed frame and putting on the stain as a means to dry out the wood? I’m fairly new to woodworking, albeit handy in other departments. Also, were you using the frame before it was stained? Beyond the sanding, did you do any additional prep work?

    1. Thanks, Tom! Appreciate the kind words and we’re excited to hear you hope to tackle this project this weekend. Ha ha, there’s no reason for the huge time gap other than life getting in the way of finishing the project. No need to let the wood dry out! Here’s the step by step tutorial for building the frame (which you may have already seen). We did not use the frame before it was stained–just continued to sleep on our boxspring! Once Mark cut our wood and pre-drilled holes, did some sanding, I stained it, then we assembled. No other prep needed! Definitely check out the questions and answers in the comments section of this post since that may help as questions arise. Best of luck! And if you think to send us pics of your finished bed frame once you create it, we’d love to feature you in our next Reader Showcase! You can see another version of the bed frame and headboard in our last one. Cheers!

  3. This is fantastic! I didn’t know you could stain with a sprayer! I loved your Tip Me Tuesday link this week. {thanks girl!} Would you like Tip Junkie to feature your blog post to over 200,000 creative women? 4. That train KILLED me! HAHA I love it! Also, I luuuuuurve seeing you on video because you’re so awesome and it’s amazing to see and hear you. It’s like we’re hanging out as you teach me all about spray staining a bed frame!

OMG and the gag reel hahaha “bugs” oh man you’re hilarious. In short, I love this video!

  5. You’re completely adorable! I love this video and the outtakes are awesome. I had no idea you could use stain with the sprayer. Amazing.
    Hugs,
    Jamie

    1. Aw, shucks. Thanks, girlie! (I felt the same watching your pie vid, btw. Adorbs central. Also, so profesh! And yes, I now abbreviate ALL my adjectives.) Yeah, the fact that it can spray beyond paint makes the Finish Max a dream machine. Hope you get to play with one soon, my friend!

  6. WOW, this thing is amazing, I had no idea it worked with stain! I saw them at Haven but was living in a small apartment at the time with no space for to use it, but now that we are in a house I could definitely use something like this! Thanks for sharing your awesome video! Pinned 🙂

    1. Oh yes! You’ll have to connect with them at Haven this summer…pending that they are there again. And that YOU’RE there! (You’re planning on going, right? We have to hang!)

      1. I hope so, especially since it will be in Atlanta! I actually won my ticket off Home Stories A-Z last year and had only been blogging for a few months, but it was super informative although I’m sure I looked like a deer in headlights, haha. We will definitely have to hang out!

  7. Okay….seriously…..BEST video ever! You are funny, engaging, wonderful…..and totally made me want to run out and buy a Home Right Sprayer right now. 🙂

    Happy day to you friend!
    karianne

    1. This comment is the best self esteem booster a blogger could ask for! Thanks, sweet Karianne! Your encouragement means the world to me. Huge hug comin’ your way…NOW!

    1. Thanks, Chelsea! We can’t wait to dive into the headboard project even more on Monday (so stay tuned!). And I’m glad to hear that your sprayer fears are dissolving…it’s really so easy to use and such a time-saver!

  8. Awesome, awesome video Lauren! I felt like I was right there with you, swatting bugs and staining boards! And I can’t believe it only took you an hour! I might need to get my hands on one of those when we do our big built-in project… otherwise, I’ll be spending a lot of time cozied up with a can of white paint and a paintbrush!

    1. Ha ha. So happy to have you along for the bug-tastic journey, Emily! Oh yes, your built-ins are definitely calling for a sprayer to help speed up the process. I can see the smooth finish now! 😉

  9. Lauren. This was super helpful. I like that’s it’s detailed. On YouTube many videos are kinda short and not explanatory enough for my taste. I have a sprayer and hope to use it when the weather warms and I deliver this babe! Thanks again. Well done!

    1. Yay! Thanks, Kelly. I was a leetle worried I would turn people off with the 18 minute long tutorial, ha ha. But I’m like you. I want detail! 😉 P.S. I can’t wait for baby Thompson to enter the world! (I’m sure you’re feeling that even moreso.) Then, let the painting projects commence!

    1. I’m just thinking of the chair transformations you could churn out with a sprayer in your possession. You’d be unstoppable, Wendi!

    1. Glad to hear that, Kara! The thing is…it really WAS that easy! 😉 Hope you get to play with one someday soon.

  10. Of course, you already know that I love love LOVE your new bed. And your video is fabulous! I really really want a paint sprayer, and that one looks fabulous.

(p.s. Yes, always have a train on hand. I make sure I’ve got one most of the time, too!)

    1. Tee hee. Glad you appreciated the train sound effect. Now, if only that train would just keep its blaring whistle-blowing to the daytime, and not the middle of the night…as it is apt to do! Lol.

And thanks for all the fanfare about our bed and the video! You’re the sweetest!

  11. Fabulous video Lauren! I loved it & felt like I was right there watching. Loved the train sound effect, made it real! Great job on the project!

    1. Ha ha. Gotta keep it real! Now, it’s YOUR turn to make a video with one of your fabulous furniture transformations using A.S. Chalk Paint! You’re becoming an expert I dare say. 😉

  12. Great video!! I will have to check out this sprayer. It looks so easy to use! I also bought that same stain for some signs I want to make!! 🙂

    1. Yay! Love that we were both drawn to that stain. It’s really fantastic stuff. Can’t wait to see your signs, Tori!

    1. Aw, thanks so much Amy! The visual of your socks flying across the room has me chuckling. (I find visual humor WAY too funny.) 😉

    1. Yep! That’s all you need: an extension cord! You’d love it, I know you would. And thanks for the warm words about our DIY bed. I’m so glad we didn’t cave and just buy one. This is SO much more rewarding (and so much better on the wallet!).

    1. Sky, your comment made me smile from ear to ear! You have a way with words, what can I say? And the word “panache”? I need to use it more often. 😉

    1. Oh yes! I’m totally Team FinishMax along with you, girl! How can I not be?! This thing is awesome-sauce. Can’t wait to see what you do next with yours….

  13. Girl, this is so fabulous! That sprayer really did make your job so much easier, and the bed turned out fabulous!! We’ve got a deck build coming up in our near future, and this would totally be a lifesaver. I’ve also got to restain our front porch so…yea. I really NEED one of these. For real. 🙂

    1. Heaps of thanks, Kirsten! And oh yes, you’re staining projects would go TEN TIMES more smoothly and quickly…that I can vouch for. 🙂

  14. Well. Well. Miss Lauren… I have to say I don’t think I have ever watched an 18 minute tutorial, but holy cream filled cannoli!! That was AMAZING!! I feel like I am prepped to try out a Homeright Sprayer sans instructions!! Oh, how I must get my hands on one of those little ladies!! And congrats on an amazing bedroom makeover!! 🙂

    1. I know I got to tell you this in person, but I’ll say it again here just because I can: your comment means SO much to me, Candace, because you and Bill are Video Mavens in my mind. And the fact you watched all 18 minutes just blows me away, especially because I know how precious your time is right now. Thank you thank you thank you! Also, “holy cream-filled cannoli” is being added to my everyday vocabulary stat. (I think we need a dictionary of fun-filled phrases just for us!) Hope you’re having a blast on your trip!

  15. Very cool! My husband has wanted a finish sprayer forever and I’m always a little intimidated by them. This looks easy enough for me to use and like it leaves a great finish! You might have changed my mind.

    1. I think you know what you need to get hubby for his birthday this year…. And it’ll be kinda like giving your Mom a baseball mitt because you’ll totally be using it, too, Kadie. You and your DIY self will rock it!

  16. You make it look fun and easy!
First, the list of things you like to do as a New Yorker…well, that was delightful. I’m glad you are still a New Yorker at heart! I like that you Included the breakdown of the different steps was very cool, esp. for us fast-paced New Englanders but it’s all so good to watch!

The video was very entertaining and informative! It also felt like we were together for a few minutes which was an added bonus! FOR-EV-VER…don’t know where that is from but will you tell us all at some point?

I digress, but was that a train at 3 minutes 40 seconds? Made me curious! OH, yes, you addressed that…thanks! And everyone should watch to the End/Fin! You rewarded us!

I will definitely purchase this tool should I need to stain something….which now I am seriously thinking of projects I could use it for…our old bedroom set could be sanded and stained…our new backyard fence in OG, etc. Visuals and a how-to are how I learn best so thanks for each step, including the clean-up. You made it look very do-able! Kudos! Great job, and perfect to add this just after the Grand Bedroom Reveal!

    1. Oh yes, I always will be a New Yorker at heart! “They can’t take that away from me….”

Aw, and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, and that it gave you a little Lauren time in addition to providing information and entertainment! That was most definitely my goal. 😉

And the FOR-E-VER reference is from the movie “Sandlot.” Do you recall this scene?

Yes, this sprayer would most definitely come in handy for the projects you mention – – I’m especially excited about the potential revamp of your Master Bedroom set. Next time you have a big painting project, I highly recommend it!

  17. We have a fence that is in need of some brightening up! This little gadget would be fabulous for our job.
I do hope to someday get busy on building some furniture pieces for our home and I would love to try this out on it.
    Thanks for the honest review!

    1. Sounds like a super fun project, KW, and perfect for the Finish Max sprayer! Tom Sawyer will need to enlist the help of the neighborhood kids no more. 😉 Tee hee. Thanks for checking out the vid!
