T-Shirt for the Pun-Loving Dad | The Thinking Closet

Do you ever just feel like being shocking and unpredictable?

Backstory: The other day I panicked and thought, “Father’s Day!  Did I miss it?”  (This is a regular occurrence–this panic over important dates–and usually, it’s legitimate.)  However, the Google told me I still have 12 more days until Father’s Day.  Did you hear that?  12.  more.  days.

After the reality of this fact actually settled in, I tented my fingertips and said in my very best Mr. Burns voice, “I shall create my Dad’s gift early this year…mwah ha ha ha!”

Early.  Hah!  I am never early.  I repeat.  Never early with a gift.  Especially not 12 days early.  But sometimes, I like to be shocking and unpredictable.  Just to keep everyone on their toes!

My Dad:

Family Portrait | The Thinking Closet
Family Photo from Summer 2012
(yes, the same photo session that my profile pic is from!)

My Dad is gifted in many areas.  He can stop your heart playing the theme from Laura on the piano…he can pack a certain daughter’s (ahem) entire dorm room into the trunk of a Ford Crown Victoria in under an hour flat…and he can beat guys half his age in a round of tennis in 90 degree weather.  So yeah, he’s pretty much a superhero in my mind.

But one strength that stands above all the others is his gift of wordplay, in particular, the art of the pun!

pun: noun \ˈpən\ the usually humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound.

{Thanks for the definition, Merriam Webster!}

Evidence:

I present to the people of the court exhibit A, our email correspondence from November 2011.  In it, we reference my secret plan to give Mark tennis lessons for his birthday.

DAD:  Try an instructor close to home. If you like him/her, go with them for a second time. Only switch if you don’t think they served you well.

LAUREN:  Just what I needed.  Thanks for the tips, Dad!

DAD:  Good!  Didn’t even realize I ended with a tennis pun.

LAUREN:  I didn’t either!  I have no doubt your subconscious is always working on being punny.  🙂

See?  So, of course, when I came across this someecard on Pinterest…

T-Shirt for the Pun-Loving Dad & Silhouette Promo | The Thinking Closet

…I got the bright idea to turn it into a t-shirt for my pun-loving Dad.  Maybe you have a punny friend or family member who would appreciate it, too?

Before I dive into the super easy tutorial, I want to entice you to stick around till the end because not only is there a new Silhouette promotion I’m eager to share about, but as this post title suggests, indeed, I’m hosting another giveaway.  Yes, you have a brand new shot at winning a Silhouette Portrait!  Eep!

Tutorial:

Step 1.  Gather your supplies.  I picked up a plain blue cotton t-shirt from Hobby Lobby for less than $3.  (Thanks, Jen, for introducing me to this previously ignored aisle.)  Look at all the fun colors they have:

Tip: When pre-washing clothes for use with heat-transfer vinyl, refrain from using fabric softener, which can cause adhesion problems.

Next, I took out my trusty dusty Silhouette Cameo and heat-transfer vinyl starter kit.  (Heat-transfer vinyl will henceforth be referred to as HTV.)

T-Shirt for the Pun-Loving Dad | The Thinking Closet

The starter kit includes:

  • 3 sheets of smooth heat transfer material (9″ x 12″ of black, teal, dark pink)
  • 2 sheets of flocked heat transfer material (9″ x 12″ of white and yellow)
  • Silhouette hook (this is an essential tool in my opinion, especially when working with vinyl!)
  • exclusive download card good for 10 heat transfer designs
  • idea booklet and instruction guide
  • instructional DVD

Step 2.  Create your design.  This took me all of about five minutes.  I picked my font (Book Antiqua), typed up my text, and here’s the key part you don’t want to forget: flip the text horizontally.  You end up cutting the design on the bottom of the HTV, so it’s key to have the image cut backwards.

Step 3.  Cut your design.  Load your HTV shiny side down (no mat needed…so make sure you select “LOAD MEDIA”).  Also, be sure to select the proper type of material in your cut settings (flocked or smooth HTV–I used flocked).  And you’re ready to let your machine works its magic.

Step 4.  Weed your design.  Using your hook tool (which looks strangely similar to a dentist’s pick), weed out the excess vinyl, so you’re just left with your text.  Place the design on the t-shirt right-side up, right where you want it.

Step 5.  Iron on your design.  When ironing (cotton setting), lay a piece of fabric on top of your design.  Apply firm pressure as you press the design for one minute or more.  Mine took about 2 minutes on each half.  I found that it helped to let the HTV cool a bit before removing the shiny plastic layer.

Finito!  I’m packaging this baby up and sending it off to my Dad for Father’s Day…early!  He’s not going to know what hit him.

  1. Lauren,
No pressure at all to respond to such a punderful T-shirt gift from my creative daughter. lol. I am humbled and honored by your Father’s Day gift blog post. Embarrassingly so! I would just request that you use family beach pix that don’t show my legs. I’ve gotten a bit of grief over being the only one of us with business shoes and socks standing on a beach. To paraphrase the Orcs in Lord of the Rings, “they don’t need the legs.” (Imagine spoken with Lisbeth’s accent.)

Intentional or not, it was quite nift to receive your gift so early in the post though miffed was I to have to wait till today to open it to see what you made me. Maybe you should shift back to sending at the last moment?!

Speaking of the terrific T, the Merry Punster in me loves it. To quote the huge owl on your lake, it’s a real hoot; Mangey says it’s the cat’s meow; and its pre-washed size fits me to a T, especially if I stand with my arms straight out–in silhouette, of course! (One snare drum ka-boom ching, again courtesy of Lisbeth). I never thought I’d be caught wearing vinyl, only playing it–but you have widened my sartorial palette splendidly. Thank you so much for the thoughtful words, both digital and pectoral. I’m proud to be the Popsie of Lauren and the Pospie of “dyslexic” Lisbeth.

    Oh yes. Chartreuse and puce.
Not really. But they rhyme in some yet-to-be-concocted psychedelic verse.
    Love,
    P. (aka Dad)

    1. Dad, I read and re-read this comment several times the night on which you posted it, and delight to re-read it again tonight. It’s so chock full of punny goodness, there are always more treasures to discover and ha-has to be had. And I love that you included so many playful rhymes and allusions to movies and Lisbeths and animals that we love. I have a poet for a father, and I didn’t even realize it. 😉 What am I saying, of course I realized it. I got to live in the same house with him for 22+ years! And I wouldn’t give up even a day of that time…even if they paid me.

I’m overjoyed to know how much you love the shirt as well as this special tribute to you and your affinity for word-play. It’s a small gesture of my great GREAT love for you, Popsie. So glad that you feel it.

      xo
      Lauren

      1. No joke, before reading Dad’s sweet words, I was going to share the story of how in an email recently I misspelled and called him “Pospie.” I loved that he caught that, and his emailed response, as you can imagine, was hilarious! Laur, this Father’s Day gift is so thoughtful. It specifically celebrates and honors him. And Dad is quite worthy of honoring! It’s been sweet to see him wear the shirt this summer, too. We do have quite a man for our Popsie (got it right that time). Love you both.

    1. Jamie, thank you so much for including my punny Father’s Day shirt in your round-up! (And I love your blog title, too.) Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Wow! I’m honored to have you showing me double the comment love on this post. Thanks, girl. And have so much fun with your CSI judging! (P.S. I left a gushing comment on the post introducing you as the judge this week…however it has yet to show up. Oh well. Just know that I declared my admiration of you to the whole wide blogging world…and meant every single word.)

    1. Aw. Thanks a million, Emily! Can’t wait to hop over and see it, as well as the 19 other Father’s Day ideas!

    1. You know I’m always up for linking up at the Mommy Archive! It’s so much to dig through my Project Gallery for old posts that fit the bill. This week, I had more than 1, which was fun! Thanks for hosting, Alice.

    1. Thanks for checking it out, Carrie! And if you ever want to join my Silhouette FB group, shoot me an email. You’d really love the gals (they’re so stinkin’ supportive, it’s not even funny).

    1. That’s so kind of you to say, Casey. And thanks for following along on Pinterest! I can get lost on Pinterest for days, it seems….

    1. Aw. “Shero.” I like that! Thanks, Jade. I’m so honored that you remember those projects past and that you enjoyed them so! You’re a dear.

  2. I want to try them alllll! 🙂 Seriously, one of my first projects will be an anchor shirt, so navy blue flocked or the blue smooth. On a side note, Im totally jealous of the selection at your Hobby Lobby! we dont have near that selection of tshirts!

    1. Oooo…navy blue flocked would be the perfect medium to work with for an anchor shirt! In fact, I might have to give that a try sooner than later (I’m a sucker for all things nautical). And that’s too bad your H.L. is skimping on the t-shirt selection. Perhaps you can show them my picture as a gentle hint?

  3. Since I have a four year old grandson, I would like to try any of the blues. Thanks for the tutorial. Great story.

    1. You’re welcome, Kathleen! And I’m glad you enjoyed my tute and tales. I could probably gab all day about my punny Dad…it was definitely a challenge to keep it just to a few paragraphs! (I’m working on conciseness.)

  4. I would love to try either the blue or pink colors. As a mom of two little boys with a little girl due any day now I am all about embracing both!

    1. YAY! A) Congrats on your little-girl-to-come. Any day now? Wow. Hang in there! And B) How fun that you’ll get to dabble in both blue and pink crafts…. I love that you’re embracing both of them. Your kids are blessed to have you, Laura.

    1. Just worked with some teal HTV today…it’s even more lovely in person than online (so good pick!). And I look forward to having you back here for a visit anytime you like! It’s my pleasure, Renee!

    1. Hooray for Geeky English Majors! (I totally was one, too. In fact, I come from an entire family of English majors…so yeah, it was pretty much an unavoidable fate.) And I’m glad to hear your husband wants a punny shirt of his own. Since you have some HTV and a Silhouette, I know that you’ll be able to whip one up for him in no time flat!

  5. I love the t-shirt! I think I’d try black first. Thank you for hosting this giveaway!

    1. I know, right? I can’t help but think of Veruca Salt singing, “I want the world! I want the whole world!” with maybe an additional verse about, “I want them all! I want the whole lot of HTV vinyl rolls!”

    1. Yay! (I’m guessing you saw my post on FB, Twitter, or Google+? Either that or we are SO on the same wavelength. Love it either way!)

        1. Responding to comments and connecting with readers is one of my favorite aspects of blogging! So, thanks for leaving me a comment in the first place, Cynthia!

  6. Great opportunity to win fun and useful machine. I would put this to use at home and in my classroom.

    1. I didn’t have a Silhouette while I was teaching full-time, but there are definitely so many wonderful ways to use it in the classroom…even simply in organizing a classroom. Out of curiosity, what level and subject(s) do you teach, Sylvia?

  7. I’m giving this a try, I suppose is for US residents but since I’m spending a while in Florida I thought What the heck!!! LOL. I loooove your family photo, so warm and lovely =D. Thanks so much for everything Lauren!

Hope you are having a lovely day

    1. Thanks for your sweet words about the family photo; it’s definitely a favorite of mine (we have it framed and hanging up on our wall). This seemed like the perfect opportunity to share it! I’m also glad you entered the giveaway, Camila. You are an honorary Floridian!

  8. Hi Lauren! Newest follower everywhere! Gabby (essentially eclectic) speaks so highly of you…feel like I know you already!!
Awesome giveaway~Fingers crossed!! These machines look amazing…one day I will OWN one!
    Happy Weekend!!
    BTW~I LOVE the glitter colors!
    xoxo

    1. Gabby is such a sweetheart, isn’t she? And any friend of hers is a friend of mine, so yes, let’s be besties! 😉 Thanks for the follows, Sharon. Will be sure to return the favor! And I’m glad to have you join in on the giveaway fun. One day is right…and who knows, that one day could be tomorrow! (Eek! Can’t wait to learn who wins it.)

  9. I would make anything and everything for my blog! I can’t believe I don’t have one yet so I’ll try my darndest to win one hehe!

    1. Kelly, you already create such GENIUS projects, I know you would floor us all with access to a Silhouette machine. Thanks for entering and for sharing the giveaway! So happy to have you in on the fun.

  10. Hi Lauren! Thank you for hosting this awesome Giveaway! It is wonderful that Silhouette America continues to give these opportunities to so many bloggers!

I would Love to make matching tees for my mom and dad! So I would have to go with white vinyl to start with. My parents are so cute…they wear matching jackets, and matching watches. The watches are from a magazine order and they are white. Don’t wak me why but I had to chuckle when I saw them. For 78 years old, they are a delight to spend time with and always make me laugh! They would sport matching t’s with Pride! Of course, I have been trying to win one of these machines for awhile now and have a running list of projects I would love to do with one!

Bev @ Give me a paintbrush

    1. Yes, you’re right, Bev; Silhouette America is so generous to offer these giveaways on so many blogs each month. They really do a great job of spreading the Silhouette cheer! I’m so thankful they have allowed me to be a giveaway ambassador for these past few months.

And I am delighted to learn about your parents and their matchy-ness! Lol. In fact, Mark and I have several pairs of matching shoes, so maybe one day, we can grow old and become awesome like your parents, with matching watches, jackets, and t-shirts! I love it! (And I love the fact that you enjoy spending time with them. That warms my heart to hear.) Hoping you get your hands on a Silhouette sometime soon; I’m eager to see all of these project ideas you have put into action!

    1. And if you have to pick smooth or flocked white, I recommend the flocked white! I’ve used it twice now in the past week, and it’s easy breezy.

  11. I’m planning on re-organizing our loft (aka the-catch-all-room). I want to put some color in there, since right now it’s a drab beige. Teal seems to be calling my name. I’d love to use some teal HTV on fabric tote boxes.

    1. I hadn’t thought to use HTV on fabric tote boxes. What a wonderful idea, Rej! And a loft sounds so romantic…even if it is a “catch-all” room. 😉

      1. Lol! Our loft is the farthest from romantic. Maybe with the help of the organizing fairy, it will be one day. Lol!!!!

  12. I would love to get rid of my Cricut Mini and replace it with a Silhouette Portrait, please.

    1. Step aside Cricut mini! There’s a new sheriff in town named the Silhouette Portrait! 🙂

  13. Aloha,

What a fun gift! I have an elderly male friend who enjoys words so that would be a perfect fit.

I luv the glitter black the most, but it wouldn’t show up much on my colour of choice (black), so I’d have to go with the metallic.

Mille grazie for the giveaway too.

    Mahalo.

    1. Tagati…ooo…black glitter on black might be really cool! You probably couldn’t get away with text, but perhaps a strong shape or pattern…now, you’ve really got me thinking! And I love all the languages you used in your comment. Muchas gracias!

    1. Red is great for a “statement” piece, Michelle (nice choice). Hope you get a chance to give it a try!

  14. Black eyed P’s! I love it!!!! Might have to steal that one for myself. Thanks so much for an awesome opportunity to drive my husband even more crazy with my craft items!

    1. Ha ha. Go for it! It’s such a fun and easy costume…and usually makes people think for a second before they’re like, “Ohhhhh! I get it!” And glad to have you enter the giveaway. My crafting endeavors have taken over our living room table for over a week. And yes, my Silhouette is a part of the chaos! (Controlled chaos, that is.)

    1. Aimee, I can pretty much guarantee that if you tried a Silhouette one time, you’d be a goner. It’s seriously a wonder machine!

    1. Such a popular selection! And I don’t blame you. I imagine glitter black would look so purdy.

    1. Michelle, I love all of the personalized onesies in your shop! Just think of the HTV onesies you could make!

    1. Cue Billy Joel’s, “For the longest time….” 🙂 (My mind often thinks in song.)

    1. Oooo…now that’s a fun color combination I hadn’t thought of before. Thanks, Alexandra!

    1. Oooo…I love the color combination of grey and yellow. I was in a wedding with that color scheme, and it was so modern and chic! How fun to create a shirt or canvas bag using those colors of HTV!

  15. Yellow and Blue (theme colors of my son’s wedding), would make 2 t-shirts appliqued ‘bride’ (yellow) and ‘groom’ (blue).

    1. Wow, Benny! I love that you already have such a vivid plan in mind for how you would use the HTV. Such a sweet idea to make complimentary bride and groom t-shirts!

  16. I love the tshirt — great ideas…I need to make some for our dads…if only we had a Silhouette 🙂

  17. I own my own small business so this would be fun to have for my own personal shirts. I would love to try the Black Glitter on a hot pink shirt. Thanks for the giveaway!

    1. Yes, it would make customizing business shirts and gear super easy. Glitter black on hot pink sounds stellar! (And like the kind of business I want to support!)

  18. I am due with a girl next month – so I would love to try the red heat transfer to make a shirt that says “big brother” for my son and perhaps one that says “I’m the Daddy” for my husband!

    1. Congrats, Jessica! How very exciting! And I love the idea of making customized shirts for your son and husband…and don’t forget one for the Mama!

  19. I so would love to have one of these! My first project would be to make decorations for onesies for my baby boy due in october!

    1. Whoo hoo! Congratulations, Emily! I’ve gone onesie-crazy lately with HTV…and I don’t even have kids of my own yet. Lol!

    1. Boring…or perhaps fashion-forward?! On Project Runway, the designers are always opting for black-and-white. It’s such a classic look…and really pops!

    1. I think it must be a requirement for being a father: they start spitting out the cheesy puns! And thanks so much for featuring this project on your awesome round-up yesterday! I’m oh so honored, Meredith.

  20. I have heard so much about this machine. I wouldn’t even know where to begin, but I’m excited about making some onsies for the new bundle. By the way, you are one of my favorite bloggers, your blog is on my blog roll of links that I HEART! Keep up the great work. 🙂

    1. Mandi, I am so touched by your kind words and the fact that you’ve included The Thinking Closet on your sidebar blogroll. (Major blush-face.) Wow! I heart readers like YOU who bolster my spirit, so I feel like I conquer any craft…or anything at all for that matter! Thanks for being so gosh darn awesome, Mandi.

    1. Ha ha. Your comment made me picture actual monkeys in HTV embellished t-shirts. (My imagination really latches onto the idea of animals in people-clothes…I’m strange like that.)

    1. Oh, Cindy…you are going to LOVE it. Definitely get at least one flocked roll if you can; it’s so much fun to work with!

  21. What I great idea! I have some of the punniest people in my family, my husband and dad included. I just don’t have a Silhouette or anything like it, just my two little ol’ hands and a pair of scissors. How much fun could I have!

    1. Aw. Your two little hands and a pair of scissors surely work wonders…but I know you’d have a blast taking things to the next level with a Silhouette. The only downside is that your crafting to-do list will get so long, you probably will never be able to create everything you want to. But I’m learning to live with that. Ha ha. And hooray for punny families! Yours sounds like a hoot!

  22. Really want to try the green flocked for a shirt for my husband! Do you think these HTV would work with the Cricut too? So far I haven’t won a Silhouette yet and I can’t for the life of me figure why they haven’t sent me one for free yet lol

    1. Hey Kristin! (Fellow Floridian.) I did a little google searching, and found this post; in the comments, at least two different people say that Silhouette HTV works with a Cricut machine…so I think you should give it a go!

    1. Nice, Colleen. The dark pink looks almost magenta…like my senior year prom dress! So, yes, I’m a fan, too!

  23. I used to be such a fan of neutral colors, but I have to say, I’m loving the black and white glitter vinyls, metallic vinyl, okay and all of the bright colored vinyls as well. I think my kids’ love of color is starting to rub off on me! =) Thank you for the chance to win!

    1. Of course they would! Who wouldn’t love something embellished with black and white glitter HTV? 🙂

    1. New to having a Silhouette? If so, never fear! I have a Silhouette FB group for newbie and veteran Silhouette users if you want to join us. Just shoot me an email to let me know…we’d be happy to have you join us and help support you as you learn how to craft with your Silhouette! (It’s really not as hard as it may seem.)

  24. Love it! You spoke right to my heart with crafting, a Silhouette and puns all in one very punny post! I know your dad will just love it if he doesn’t faint first from the shock of the early gift. Thanks for sharing your talent with us and for hosting another giveaway. If I were to win this prize, you know the first color I would go for is pink, followed by more pink.

    1. After ooing an ahhing over your tea party and bridal shower decor, your pink HTV selection is no surprise to me! I can almost see the matching Mommy-and-daughter t-shirts now….

  25. Are our dads related? My dad is the king (or co-king with your dad) of puns and corny jokes! All. the. time. I did a lot of eye-rolling growing up, lol. I’m sure your dad will love his new shirt. I think I would go crazy making tons of shirts for my little guys with this! Hope you’re having a great week, Lauren!

    ~Abby =)

    1. Sounds like our dads would get along punningly, Abby! And as I’ve gotten, I’ve developed more and more of an appreciation for puns myself…at least, much more so than during my eye-rolling adolescence. Thanks for your sweet comment, Abby, and I hope you have a great rest of your week, as well! Cheers.

    1. Selfishly, I want you to win a Silhouette so that you can entertain me with the hilarious t-shirts I know you’ll make. 🙂

    1. I’m with ya, Sarah. All of these comments about the glitter HTV have me seriously considering investing in some myself. I love me some sparkle!

  26. I love the silhouette! I’ve been wanting one for a couple years now, but don’t have the extra cash to spend. 🙁 Here’s hoping I win!

    1. I know, I’m thrilled that Silhouette continues to offer these giveaways through multiple bloggers for this very reason. I know times are tight for a lot of folk…so here’s to hoping you win one soon!

    1. Aw, Thalita! Your enthusiastic comments never cease to bring a huge smile to my face. You are such an encouragement, and don’t you worry…I certainly plan to have more punny posts to come!

    1. Don’t you love it how we are drawn to certain colors through different seasons of life? I had a blue phase in high school…a pink phase in college…a purple phase in grad school…aqua blue around my wedding…and lately, I’ve been drawn to neutrals like tan and gray. Lime green sounds like such a fun phase to me! I might have to try that one next.

    1. Ha ha. Steal away, Kelly! We found the idea online, ourselves. #nothingisnewunderthesun

    1. That would have you covered for any creation on any colored clothing item. Done and done!

    1. Thanks, Tronesia! It turned out even better than I expected. (Love it when that happens.) Mine was flocked white in case that wasn’t clear in the tutorial…so it has a nice, fuzzy feel to it…yet still looked crisp and clean. 😉 Thanks for entering.

  27. I have to choose just one color?? I love how easy and creative this looks, and you can create your own designs. What a great personal gift for Popsie. I want to win!!! Thanks for the chance.

    1. The Silhouette makes it super easy to make customized gifts…it’s part of why I love it so! And thanks for your kind words about my gift. Thanks for taking the time to comment and enter the giveaway. The more, the merrier!

  28. I think I’d start with basic black – no, wait – mint green for my newest grandbaby coming and we don’t know if we’re having a girl or a boy yet.

    1. Ooo…mint green sounds lovely (and definitely gender-neutral enough)…on a dark gray onesie perhaps? Hoping you win, Linda, in part so I can see this onesie in action! And congrats on this new grandbaby that is on the way. How very exciting!

    1. I know you’ve had your heart on a Portrait, Tanya, for all those 8.5 x 11 projects you do. And I like the big red heart idea! Perfect for someone with a big heart like yours.

    1. Yes! That’s what this was: flocked white HTV. (I mentioned it once, briefly in Step 3, though maybe I need to make it more clear!) I love how soft and fuzzy it feels, and yet it still cuts cleanly and crisply. I recommend it.

    1. Aw! Thanks, Jennifer. And I’m crossing my fingers and toes along with you. Would love to see the things you’d create with a Silhouette at your disposal. Eep!

    1. Okay, so am I the only one who didn’t know what BOGO meant until now? Clearly, I need to read up on my acronyms…F.R.Y. (that was “for real, y’all” in case you didn’t know). 😉 And yes, Shannon. Cross over the dark side of HTV! It’s so stinkin’ easy to make personalized gifts…then again, so are most things with the Silhouette. But you already know that!

      1. I’ve actually had an idea for a shirt to show my love for my hometown after all these ugly storms (really, Mother Nature…you’re drunk, go home. Never in history have two EF5s hit the same state in the span of a year, let alone in two weeks. Oh yeah, and also the widest tornado on record at 2.6 MILES wide… this was a really long tangent, sorry) and I think that HTV will be a great tool, maybe even along side a stenciled design…. O.o

Also, it’s okay about the acronyms… I used to think that SMH was just a short had of one of those noises you make when your frustrated… I’d read it in my head as SMEH. Took me a looooong time before I realized it stood for “shaking my head”…. -_-

        1. 2.6 miles wide?! Holy cow that’s huge. I didn’t realize that. And I think that’s a great idea to use your Silhouette and some HTV to design some t-shirts honoring your hometown. Oooo, I’m seeing a fundraiser develop in my brain….

Ha ha, you totally made me lol with your “SMEH” story. Makes me think of a few stories from my English teaching days. I had a student write RME in a paper for English class…had to look that one up before I realized she meant, “Rolling my eyes.” Oh honey. Really? In a paper? And my favorite was a student who wrote N/A for all the answers he didn’t know. I don’t think he realized what that actually meant…but in a way, it was a true. Answers just weren’t applicable to him because he didn’t know them. Gave me a chuckle!

  29. you are adorable Lauren! 🙂 love your black-eyed peas picture; you really make me laugh! 🙂
Your dad will love his new t-shirt, oh! so fun everything you can do with your Silhouette 🙂 & love what you shared with us about your father!
    punny! 🙂

    1. Ha ha. That’s right; I don’t think we were bloggy buddies back in October when I first posted our Black Eyed Peas costume. Glad to give you a chuckle retroactively! 😉 And I’m glad you approve of my punny Father’s Day gift. He is waiting until the gift arrives to read this post…so the anticipation is killing me. (One downside to creating a gift early is the waiting game. Tee hee.)

    1. Clearly, I’m with ya, Sonia, because I really liked the flocked white on the bright blue shirt…so be proud of your selection! 🙂

    1. Oooo…I agree that either white on a lime shirt or lime on a white shirt would look really eye-catching and fun for summer! Thanks for entering, Patti!

  30. Your dad is not only going to love the shirt with the perfect saying for him, but the entire post and your honoring him with your words and pictures!! I’m sure he’ll come up with something punny to say about it, too! That’s so amazing that you are also offering another Silhouette Give-away…you go, girl!! (Mark is such a good sport as your #1 male model!)

    1. Ha ha. I agree, Mom. I am 100% positive there will be puns in his response. And I’m glad to know you think he’s going to like it; you know him best of all! And Mark was a fantastic male model to work with…lol. We did have Mangey circling around our feet to distract us, but I somehow managed to snap a few decent photos. 🙂

          1. Lol. Too funny! I saw some of those links on your FB page, too, and got sucked into that site for a quite a bit tonight. Following her tumblr now. Thanks for sharing!

          2. Your dad proudly wore this shirt yesterday in OG when Aime, Greg, and Eliana were visiting! He loves the shirt you made so specifically for him!

          3. I loved making it for him, so I’m happy to know it’s getting good wear!

    1. You’re so kind to say so, Mary! HTV can really make anyone feel profesh. 😉 And thanks for joining in on the giveaway fun.

  31. I love the purple and lavender colors. I would love this to make custom items for my baby girl!

    1. Aw! I bet your baby girl would look oh so darling in purple and lavender. Heck, she’d probably be cute in any color! (Babies seems to be good at that.)

  32. I would love to try out the pink, because my daughter would be excited about any image put onto a shirt in pink!

    1. Aw! Your daughter is a girl after my own heart. One of my favorite backpacks I ever owned was bubblegum pink, and I rocked it with pride all through college. Your mention of pink just brought that memory back in a flash! Have a great night, Sandra.

    1. Oooo…green, yellow, and orange would be fun to use together! A little HTV layering, perhaps? (Still hoping to venture into the land of layering later this week. Hoping it doesn’t end in an epic craft fail!)

    1. Nice, Judy! Those colors give off a beachy vibe in my mind (maybe because our beach bag is teal and lime green!).

  33. I really need to win this! My two GREAT NIECES, aged 6 and 4, will be relocating from Ohio to living with me in coastal Georgia, and I want to be the cool Auntie who helps them make t-shirts and other cool clothes. Please help me! (…and thanks for the chance!)

    1. Aw! I’m sure you’re already a cool Auntie in their minds…though it would be fun to have a Silhouette around to up the cool factor. I bet they’d just love to work on fun projects with you! Here’s to hopin’, right?

    1. O.m.g…just think of the intricate designs you could cut and then iron onto CLOTH shoes! (Might be a bit of a challenge, but nothing that you can’t handle.)

    1. Thanks, Coley! I really hope he does! (And that the shirt didn’t shrink too much in the wash…it claimed to be preshrunk but most definitely was not!)

  34. I finally tried using my heat transfer vinyl I purchased. Got my logo all ready to go, loaded my HTV and was off . . . EXCEPT that I did not do my research and loaded the HTV with the shiney side up and Yep I made a stencil instead of a HTV that I could use. I have decided that I have morphed from having dumb blonde moments to Senior moments. I can’t believe I did that, but I redid it and it all turned out well,

I want to try the glitter white for my shirts – don’t think the guys want to wear glitter. I am heading over to get the BOGO from Silhouette and using your code.

    Thanks so much Lauren!

    1. Aw. Don’t beat yourself up too much. It’s only a matter of time before I either cut the wrong side or forget to flip it. And I’m not a natural blonde, but definitely have my fair share of “blonde” moments, too, so don’t be too hard on yourself, Karen!

And I’m so glad to hear you were able to use the code! I’m really tempted by the glitter black and white myself. You’ll have to tell me how you end up using it! K? K.

    1. Ha ha. Thanks, Tara! It was a totally last-minute idea that ended up working out better than I expected. Though we sadly didn’t get too many trick-or-treaters. I’m hoping to do another punny costume this year…and maybe even throw a “punny” themed Halloween party! (Clearly, I’m my Father’s daughter.)

Yes, the glitter sounds awesome, doesn’t it?

    1. It was tucked back there in the last aisle in the back corner and for some reason, I never thought to look at the price-tags…when I discovered how inexpensive and colorful their shirts were, I was kicking myself for not checking it out sooner!

  35. Are you kidding me?? What an awesome promo Lauren! And I’m still waiting on the last promo you offered to arrive in the mail….dare I take advantage of this one too?? One can never have too many rolls of heat transfer. Who am I kidding? I don’t have any yet! Off to take advantage of yet another cool offer. Oh, and I LOVE the t-shirt you made for your dad. He sounds like a gem, and I’m sure he’ll love it! Have an awesome day!

    Debbie

    1. No jokes here, Debbie! (What am I saying? I’m full of jokes. Really bad ones. But I suppose this promo is no joke!) I’m with you…one can’t have too many rolls around. You never know when inspiration is going to strike to make a custom T or tote. In fact, I just bought a bunch of canvas totes myself so I’ll have them at the ready! 😉

I’m happy to know that you’re excited about using HTV, and that you were able to take advantage of the sale. As always, I’ll be on pins on needles waiting to see what you create with it! It’s going to be fantasmagorical…that’s all I know.

Have a great rest of your week, Debbie.

  36. OMGoodness!!! Another chance!?? I just got school-girl-giddy!!! Ahhhhh!!!! Thanks Lauren! Oh yeah, and LOVE LOVE LOVE the gift for Popsie!

    1. You betcha! And your giddiness is a delight to me, Kristin! I’m rooting for you to get a Silhouette soon, and I love love love the fact that you called my Dad, Popsie. Way to make me smile, girl.

      1. You know, it’s funny because I get teased for still calling my dad ‘daddy’…but he will always be daddy, no matter how old I am. So I loved that you had a cute nickname for your dad. I’m trying to think of a creative gift for my dad for fathers day…he’s retired but watches our 11 month old 3 days a week…maybe a fun t-shirt is in order =)

        1. I think that’s great that you still call him “Daddy.” I have a close friend from college who does the same. I only started calling my Dad “Popsie” in the last 10 years or so, but it’s a nickname that stuck…he even likes it! And how special that your baby gets quality time with Grandpa 3 days a week…your Daddy might need a “Super Grandpa” t-shirt like the one Beth is dreaming up! (See her comment.)

  37. You’ll never spend big money on t-shirts again! (Thanks for the shout out!) I was just wishing I had some more HTV to make matching shirts for Niels and D for father’s day! Just put in my order. Thanks for saving me money!

btw…my favorite punny costume was a friend who dressed in a stuffed black bag, wore sunglasses, and had a cane. She was a blind date! 🙂

    1. After seeing the amazing HTV creation you whipped up in record time (as a newbie at that), I know that we’re in store for some incredible creations once you get your hands on some more HTV! Yay! And thanks again for opening eyes to the wonders of the T-Shirt aisle. I feel like life went from black-and-white to technicolor after that moment…okay, maybe I’m being a tad melodramatic, but it’s kinda sorta true. 🙂

And I lol’d at the idea of the “blind date” costume. I’m going to have to add that to my list of potential punny costume ideas for next Halloween! Ha ha. Love it!

    1. A festive color-combination! And indeed, it’s loads of fun, Marilyn. Hope you get to try it soon!

  38. Too funny! I appreciate a good sense of humour and that is a way better way to do a t-shirt than the project that shall remain nameless that I tried.

    1. Ha ha. Your comment makes me think of a Lord of the Rings reference: “He who shall not be named” or rather, “The project that shall not be named.” Although you know you could write a thoroughly entertaining post about said t-shirt fail. In fact, that’s a post I really want to read…can I put in a special request for it?

  39. Great gift Lauren!! Love it!
You should have your dad (and you) come down to Austin next May for our annual O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships. Anyone can participate — or just watch. (O. Henry actually lived here in Austin for a period of his life). More info: http://www.punpunpun.com/
    Kenley

    1. Oh my goodness. There is such a thing as a “Pun-Off”? And it’s an annual event? And it’s a world championship competition? How cool is that?! We seriously need to consider a family trip. Off to check out that website. Thanks for once again rocking my world with another amazing suggestion.

    1. So many fans of the “lime and teal” combo…love it! And Carol, way to make me blush with your comment. Not sure if I’m charming or just cheezy, but my Dad is definitely as charming as they come! (Though I may be a bit biased.) 😉

    1. That exclamation point exudes eagerness! And red is such a bright n’ bold color. I painted my bedroom walls bright red after graduating college; it was strangely liberating.

    1. Aw. Thanks, Kara! My Dad really is a kid at heart (he loves Disney more than anyone I know!), and I feel so blessed to have him in my life.

  40. I would go crazy with the pinks!!! I have 3 daughters, but the pink is for me! They don’t love it much 🙁

    1. I’m all about the pink, too, Lori, so you’re not alone! I’ve declared pink and red as my favorite colors…clash though they may! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Katherine! It’s always nice to come across projects that are quick and easy like this one. It’s a great reminder that you don’t have to spend half of the day on a project for it to be meaningful.
