“Anne of Green Gables” Inspired Birthday Party

How to host an "Anne of Green Gables" or "Anne with an E" themed birthday party with food, decor, activities, and games for the whole family! SO many creative ideas jam-packed in this post. Eek!

This past spring, Mark and I devoured the new Netflix series, “Anne with an E,” in a matter of days. And somewhere between the raspberry cordial incident and those divine puffed sleeves, we were struck with inspiration to host an “Anne” themed birthday party for my sweet sister-in-love Jodi this summer.

Mark estimates that he and his siblings watched the classic “Anne of Green Gables” movie upwards of 100 times while growing up. And we know how very much Jodi appreciates an excuse to bust out tea cups with pinky extended and mutter fancy phrasings like “splendid” and “ever so much.” So, we put a day on the books for her and her family to join us at our home on “The Lake of Shining Waters.” And Mark and I set to work to plan a birthday celebration in Jodi’s honor that our beloved Anne Shirley would approve of!

Fun fact: This is one of those posts I didn’t initially plan to write. But the party was so do-able to plan and ended up being so much fun for all of us–kids and adults alike–I decided it was worth sharing here on the blog!

Also, I have a hunch there may be other “kindred spirits” out there who share our affinities for the L. M. Montgomery books, the 80s films with Megan Follows, the new “Anne with an E” Netflix series, or all of the above. And I hope this strikes you with inspiration as you look forward to your next party or friend gathering. As Anne says,

“Oh Marilla, looking forward to things is half the pleasure of them.”

Invitation

We decided to send Jodi a formal invitation from Anne herself to mount her anticipation the week of the party, as well as set the tone for our Anne-themed affair. Mark and I collaborated on a very simple handmade invitation we whipped up together using this image of Anne sitting on her suitcase and printed out on cardstock paper. Jodi reported that she laughed out loud at the “perfect graveyard of buried hopes” line. Success!

Party Planning

I also whipped up a “Party Time” spread in my bullet journal to help me keep all of the party details in order beforehand, especially since we had two different events we were hosting in the same week. It really helped minimize stress because we were able to work on our preparations ahead of time rather than fall prey to that last-minute scramble I know all too well. I plotted out the following elements:

  • event (the who, what, and when)
  • theme
  • food
  • activities
  • tasks

Perhaps this spread will be useful to you in planning your next big event! D.I.Y. Book Page Mason Jar Candle Holders

“I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”

In Anne’s spirit of simplicity, we decorated with items we already had or could easily D.I.Y.

And considering that Anne is a self-proclaimed “book drunkard,” I created some Book Page Mason Jar Candle Holders to decorate our buffet table and dining table. They are as easy to create as you imagine. All you need:

  • mason jars
  • votives or tea candles
  • old book pages
  • white cotton string or twine

And no worries! No books were harmed in the making of these candle holders that weren’t already damaged when I purchased them. In fact, I used the same vintage book pages from my D.I.Y. Bookmark Wedding Favor project, cutting a few pages down to size for each jar, securing them with white cotton string tied in a bow.

Suffice it say, a few of these gems have weaseled their way into our everyday decor because they’re just so delightful.

Decor

We “shopped the house” to pull together a few other decor elements, adding more romance and fun to the festivity.

You might recognize the Shabby Chic Photo Booth Backdrop that I DIY’d for my for my sister’s wedding hanging above the French doors like Victorian era curtains. The strips of gingham and burlap seemed befitting of Anne’s farm girl attire.

I also busted out my D.I.Y. Animal Place-Card Holders to display some of our food and drink selections, sure to only select animals that might have roamed the farms on Prince Edward Island.

It was also quite fortuitous that “Jodi” and “Juniper” both start with the letter “J.” I was able to dress up the buffet table with the D.I.Y. Flower Monogram Letter “J” that I had created for Juniper’s Blooming First Birthday Bash….

…propping it up against a stack of old books similar to ones Anne might have tucked under her arm.

My great-grandmother’s vintage tea cup also made an appearance!

And we were sure to utilize the vintage chalkboard we have hanging in our hallway, paying homage to that infamous scene where Anne breaks her slate over Gilbert’s head. I penned on it a favorite Anne Shirley quote:

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think.”

And Mark used the chalkboard sign we have on the front porch to welcome our guests to “The Lake of Shining Waters!”

These were just a few personal touches that added up to a whole lotta’ Anne-themed atmosphere.

Music

We had music from the film playing as our guests walked in the door. Though I wish we had purchased the soundtrack in advance rather than use YouTube with those mood-killing ads popping up every few minutes. Sheesh! Perhaps you can learn from the error of our ways.

Lunch

We had fun putting together some simple, scrumptious delights for lunch that felt befitting of an afternoon tea with Anne and her bosom pal, Diana.

A spread of vegetables and dip with Gilbert’s classic, “Hey Carrots!” greeting

…plus some sweet open-faced raisin bread sandwiches with “magical” concoction of cream cheese, cream cheese icing, shredded carrots, and chopped walnuts on top. Thanks to Flour & Fancies for that recipe inspiration!

Raspberry Cordial

And of course, what would an Anne party be without “raspberry cordial”?! There are lots of recipes out there if you want to make your own.

We went the simple route and just whipped up some Raspberry Ice Crystal Light in our beverage dispenser. The kids got such a kick out of watching the scene where Diana gets tipsy and sick from the “raspberry cordial”…or rather, the currant wine. We were sure to show them the scene before serving lunch!

Puffed Sleeves

I couldn’t resist dressing Juniper in a smocked dress from my mother’s childhood that had “puffed sleeves” on it! The blue even matched the color of the dress Matthew purchases for Anne in the film. Here are some of my favorite lines from that scene:

MARILLA: “Brown sugar indeed. I knew Matthew was up to some foolishness.”

ANNE: “Marilla, look at the puffs!”

MARILLA: “They’re ridiculous! You’ll have to turn sideways to get through the doors.”

Games & Activities for the Whole Family

We planned several different Anne-themed activities for the party that would be fun for kids and adults alike.

New Names

Soon after our guests arrived, we invited them to sit on the couch and kicked things off with a clip from the film where Anne first meets Matthew at the train station, journeys to Green Gables, and meets Marilla, asking to be called Cordelia–or if not, then “Anne with an E.”

Although Marilla has no patience for the practice of making up names for oneself, we do!

We gave everyone new-and-improved names for the day to help usher us into Anne’s world of drama, flair, and magnificence. We made a point to announce each guest’s new name with lots of gusto and applause as we presented their nametag to them. It was a fun way to invite everyone to join us on an imaginative journey into Anne’s world for the next few hours.

Group Storytelling

As is apparent in that opening scene, Anne has a vivid imagination! She even says:

Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive–it’s such an interesting world. It wouldn’t be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There’d be no scope for imagination then, would there?

To stretch our imaginations, we did a Group Storytelling activity. The story can be about anything your imagination dreams up!

How to play: The first person will start by holding an object to signify it’s their turn to share. And they’ll start the story with a “Once upon a time…”, and after sharing a few details setting up the who and the where, they can pass the object to the person next to them who will continue the story, adding some new details and plot twists. You can always pass the object if you get stuck. Or you can set up the next person by giving them a lead-in like, “and everything was fine and dandy, until…” and they’ll pick up where you left off! The person who started the story gets to end it when they receive the object after it has gone around the whole circle.

We told two different group stories together using Juniper’s hairbrush as our object that we passed. Somehow they both ended up being about rats! {Snicker.}

Old-Fashioned Egg & Spoon Relay Race

The next two activities took us outdoors, so we gave instructions first while we were inside to maximize our time in the cool air-conditioning. #FloridaProblems

The first was an old-fashioned egg relay race, which is something that Anne might have played in her day.

How to play: We broke up the group into two teams. The teams lined up behind the line, each holding a spoon (soup spoons for the kids, teaspoons for adults). The first person in line began with an egg balanced on their spoon, and when we said, “Go!”, he had to race as quickly and carefully as possible to and from a designated spot (for us it was from the log to the swing). When returning to their team, the player had to carefully pass the egg from his spoon to the next person’s spoon, and the race continued on with each person completing the course until all members had raced. If a player dropped the egg at any point, and it didn’t break, you had to scoop it back up on your spoon and continue. If you dropped the egg, and it broke, you had to go back to the starting line to pick up a new egg, and start your turn again.

Thankfully, we had no egg casualties.

The birthday girl got to go twice, and I dare say she won it for her team!

Three-Legged Race

How can we forget the three-legged race at the Barry Family Picnic where Anne and Diana smoked their classmates and crossed the finish line first?!

We tried our hand feet at the game, pairing up each kid with an adult, tying our legs together at the ankle with a strip of cloth, marking the start and finish lines, and shouting, “Go!”

I’m proud to say that though it was a close race, my speedy partner Micah helped drag me across the finish line, so we could claim the victory!

TIP: a streamer makes for a great finish line to break through.

Dares

Tired and hot from our jaunt outdoors, we ventured inside for some more “raspberry cordial” and air-conditioning. Then, “Dares” was the perfect finale to our group activities for the day.

First, we showed a clip of Anne taking a dare to walk the ridge-pole on the roof, resulting in her fateful tumble to the ground and ankle sprain. Yikes!

“Don’t be very frightened, Marilla. I was walking the ridge-pole and I fell off. I suspect I have sprained my ankle. But, Marilla, I might have broken my neck. Let us look on the bright side of things.”

We used some creativity and a little help from the interwebs to come up with our set of dares, most of which were a bit safer than Anne’s. We typed them up in advance, printed them out, and cut them into strips of paper, which we placed in a crown I just had lying around. (Cough…theatre prop…cough.)

How to play: For the first round, each person could pull out two slips of paper and then narrow it down to the one dare they wanted to take. But in round two, everyone agreed that we wanted to up the ante, and each person had to complete the dare they pulled out.

Everyone was a great sport, and we shared lots of laughs!

After our first two rounds had ended, the kids were stuffing the slips of paper back into the crown to keep playing. I’d call this one a big win. Anne would most definitely agree.

“Life is worth living as long as there’s a laugh in it!”

Here were some of our dares:

  • Lick your elbow (or crelbow) while singing the alphabet.
  • Eat 1 teaspoon of mustard.
  • Wear a pair of socks on your hands for the rest of the game.
  • Fill your mouth with water and try singing a song.
  • Imitate a monkey as best you can for 15 seconds.
  • Draw a mustache on your face and keep it on until the end of the game.
  • Draw a picture with a crayon using your toes.
  • Smell everybody’s feet and find “the winner.”
  • Allow the group to wrap you up in toilet paper, and then snap a photograph.
  • Do a model runway walk across the room.
  • Jump on one leg for 20 seconds with both hands on your head.
  • Dance around the room, singing “Happy birthday!”
  • Play “This Little Piggy Went to Market” on someone’s toes.
  • Go outside and shout, “[insert family pet name here], I love you!” on the top of your lungs.
  • Allow us to wrap you up like a birthday present.
  • Pretend you are underwater for the next three turns.
  • Do your best ballet dance.
  • Spin around 10 times and try to walk in a straight line.
  • Keep a straight face while everyone tries to make you laugh for 1 minute.
  • Hold an ice cube in your hand until it melts.
  • Act like a cat for the next round.

Supplies to set aside:

  • a pair of socks
  • eyeliner
  • crayon and paper
  • a roll of toilet paper
  • wrapping paper, tape, and a straw

“Kindred Spirit” Scones

After we finished all of our fun activities, it was time for dessert!

In lieu of birthday cake, I baked up a batch of Better-Than-Starbucks Cranberry Orange Scones using a recipe from my friend Kalyn Brooke. I’ve never tried my hand at scones before, but these turned out great. What I love about them is how soft they are. Easy for poking a birthday candle through!

I dubbed them “Kindred Spirit Scones” to fit in with our Anne-theme.

We also served up some sliced peaches with homemade whipped cream.

A Parting Gift

Jodi got to take the DVD home as a birthday gift, and she shared that she watched it on a sick day she had recently! Leave it to Anne to possess the imaginative power to whisk us away to another world.

My very own Diana Barry

Jodi is a true kindred spirit. I felt that connection with her from the moment we first met while I was visiting Wheaton College as a high school senior. Jodi was a Wheaton freshman at the time and made me laugh to tears with her hilarious sense of humor. I remember thinking, “If gals like Jodi Lanker are at Wheaton, well, then that’s the school for me.”

I did end up going to Wheaton. And Jodi and I “happened” to end up on the same dorm floor my freshman year, her sophomore year. And I “happened” to up in a Romantic Literature class with her brother, Mark Lanker. And I “happened” to act in a theatre ensemble with their brother Todd Lanker.

And now, all these years later, I “happen” to be a Lanker, too. All this “happenstance” has sealed our sisterhood for life.

What a delight to get to plan this special party in honor of my very own Diana Barry.

More Anne-spiration

I hope this post has stretched your “scope for imagination” when it comes to planning your next family party! L. M. Montgomery really created such a dynamic, lovable character in Anne. She helps us all celebrate life to the full!

In fact, I was so Anne-spired after our party, I decided to incorporate an Anne of Green Gables theme on the pages of my bullet journal for the month of October! After all, Anne possessed a special kind of appreciation for this time of year:

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

  1. I never watched the show or the movie, but I somehow got sucked into watching the series on Netflix. LOL I binge watched it over a few days while my hubby was out of town. The season finale left me a little uneasy. I don’t want anything to happen to her and her new family! :/ And I so loved the budding romance between her and that kid, so if it’s coming back for another season, I’m hoping more will come of that. Love the book-page wrapped mason jars. That’s a fabbity-fab idea for home décor. Especially if you love books.

  2. Thanks Lauren! I loved this post! Jodi told me a bit about the party so it was so fun to see pictures and hear all about it. That was perfect for Jodi -I’m glad you could plan such a special party for such a sweet amazing girl:) Thanks for sharing!

  3. So beautiful! 🙂 I think it was a good call to share this. Maybe someday I’ll have another Anne party. 🙂 Lol, I always liked to call myself Diana of the Lake of Shining Waters as a kid!

  4. So fun to relive the details of that beautiful celebration. I felt so loved and celebrated, and what a gift for my kiddos to be included in the festivities! You and mark have an incredible way of making others feel so seen and valued and celebrated! So thankful to be the recipient of your extravagant love. I feel like we should be standing on the green gables bridge at sunset with the wind blowing our hair and the theme song playing as I say ‘of all the gifts in the world, being friends with one’s family is among the greatest!’ Love you!

  5. What a lovely party! You Lankers certainly know how to throw a bash that is not only fun to attend, but also makes your guests feel extremely loved. Jodi is such a lucky gal!

P.S. I’m thrilled the scones came out well for you!
