If there’s anything I love more than a punny Halloween costume, it’s a punny Halloween costume that involves the whole family.  And if those costumes can inspire you to bust out into song?  Well, then, all the better!

This was our fifth year dressing up in pun-inspired costumes where we embraced literal interpretations of the word or phrase.  Visual irony at its finest!  But this was our first year as a family of three, so naturally, we had to get baby Juniper in on the pun.  Develop that knee-slappin’ sense of humor while they’re young, I say.

Well, after scouring the interwebs for inspiration and narrowing it down to my favorite 20 Punny Halloween Costume Ideas for Kids, we landed on the winner.  Are you ready for the big reveal?

I give to you, our punny Halloween costumes for 2016.  Need a hint?  Read it aloud, and it should be made clear to you.  We also have some props with song lyrics to help ya out!

That’s right.  We are “Ice Ice Baby,” the 1991 hit rap number released by Vanilla Ice.  Here’s that “dope melody,” as the song goes, if you need a refresher….

Update: And before I go any further, if you’re keen on punny costumes for a family of three, here’s our latest and greatest! Introducing the Eggo-lovin’ Eleven and her “Stranger Things!” Fans of the Netflix series are going to get a lot of knee-slappin’ pun out of this one. Click HERE for the full photo shoot and blog post.

Our Punspiration

Alright, back to our “Ice Ice Baby” costume. I’ve gotta’ give credit where credit is due. This punny Halloween costume idea was not original to us. This awesome couple was our inspiration. It was so “Nice Nice Baby,” we had to try it for ourselves.

So, I busted out my *new Cameo 3 machine to help achieve a professional look to our costumes.  And I decided to incorporate a few elements that would play homage to Vanilla Ice and his classic 90s beats.

Hence the shades:

And our reference to the oh-so-memorable lyrics, “Stop, collaborate, and listen!”

I snapped photos of the entire process of transforming clear trash bags into snowflake-decorated bags of ICE.  And I’d love to share the step by step tutorial in case there are any other cheesy families of three out there lookin’ to get a good groan from their pals this Halloween.

Or if you’re just lookin’ for a  smile, you can skip to the bottom for more photos from our backyard photo shoot a.k.a. Juniper’s meltdown.  Outtakes included!

Tutorial

Step 1.  Gather your supplies.

Here’s what I used to create our “Ice Ice Baby” costume pieces:

Step 2.  Prep your bags.

The best way to figure out where to cut the arm holes and how wide to cut the base is simply to have a person wear the bag while the other makes cuts (carefully) using a pair of scissors.  I didn’t want to cut the bottom edge completely off since I wanted the bags to be cinched at the bottom, so we went as tight as we could go while it was still comfortable to wear.

Then, at Mark’s suggestion, I cut tiny slits on the right side seam by the front and the left side seam by the back that allowed us to pull the red tie-string from the sides instead of in the middle of the neck.

Step 3.  Create your ICE designs.

I knew I wanted to use my new Silhouette Cameo 3 machine to create some professional looking bags o’ ice for our costumes.  In my research, most ICE bags featured the snow-capped letter look, which was really easy to re-create using a photo image and the trace function in my Silhouette Studio software.  I simply broke down the traced image into two parts (the blue letters and the white snow-caps) and sized them to be about 5″ x 11″.

In the screenshot below, you can see the original traced ICE logo on top, then it separated out into the letters (blue) and the snow-caps (white).  I also incorporated into my design two sizes of snowflakes from a stock image I found in my Silhouette Studio library.

TIP: If you don’t have a digital craft-cutter at home, you could easily print out some ICE logos on paper and adhere them with double-side tape or glue.

I also created text for some fun “accessories” for us that would play on the rap lyrics, “Stop, collaborate, and listen.”  I used the font TrashHand along with some comic-style bubbles I created in PicMonkey to design three little signs for us.  I made sure the measurements of the first two would work well with a paint-stirrer handle, and that the third piece of text would fit on one of Juniper’s onesies.  She’s getting so much better at gripping lately, but we figured it’d be a safer bet to have her signage be wearable.  Tee hee.

Step 4.  Prepare to cut your vinyl.

You’ll note in the screenshot below that I used the standard custom cut settings for vinyl this time because I have a brand new blade.  But I always run a test-cut just to confirm that I have achieved that perfect “kiss cut” that you strive for with vinyl.  That way, I save myself from ruining perfectly good media.

"Ice Ice Baby" Punny Halloween Costume for a Family of 3! DIY Tutorial - Here's how I used my Silhouette machine to create some professional looking bags of ice!

I also set up my Silhouette machine with my roll-feeder to help keep my rolls of vinyl from getting groovy to the beats and dancing all over the place!  This was my first time using it with my Cameo 3, but it nested in the Cameo-labeled slots just perfectly.

Roll-Feeder: slots for nesting the front feet of your Cameo or Portrait machine.

I also needed to adjust the rollers on my machine since I was loading the vinyl directly instead of on a mat.  The right roller on the new Cameo 3 has an easy-to-use lock and unlock setting on the roller itself.  So after raising the lever to release the bar, I unlocked the roller, moved it left one notch, re-locked it, and then re-secured the bar.  I was ready to load my vinyl and get to cutting!

Step 5.  Cut your vinyl.

With a deep breath, I hit the “Send to Silhouette” button on my screen and then watched my Cameo 3 do her magic.  Everything cut like a dream, and I had zero wasted pieces, thankfully.

I repeated this process with the white vinyl, cutting out the snow-caps and snowflakes.

Step 6.  Apply your vinyl to the bags.

Typically, one might use transfer tape with vinyl, but because of how thin and flimsy the bags were, I knew transfer tape would work against us and not for us.  So, I simply peeled off the vinyl pieces by hand, and using a measuring tape and a bit of old fashioned “eyeing it,” I applied the ICE letters…

…followed by the snow-caps…

…then I marked out where the snowflakes would go using tape…

…so I could easily apply the snowflakes to the bag.  And voila!

I couldn’t stop smiling over how legit this ICE bag looked.  It had me salivating for “a goblet of something cool and refreshing.”  (Name that comedian.)

Step 7.  Create the faux “ice” for inside the bags.

We found that bundled up clear trash bags tucked inside the main outer bag really helped create the “bag of ice” look, so I simply cut off both ends of the top trim of the bag to release the red tie and removed both strips so the bag would be without any color.

I found that it took 8-10 of these bundled up bags to really fill out the front of one of our main outer bags.  When it came time to stuff them, we helped each other out, and then cinched the bottom of our bag tight with a twist and then tucked it in our pants to secure it (though this did not prove to be a really permanent solution, so I’m going to try to figure out an alternative for Halloween night).

Step 8.  Complete the sign accessories.

Remember the designs for “Stop, collaborate, and listen,” that I created in step 3?  Well, I went ahead and cut the first two words on blue vinyl, which I then applied to white cardstock (careful to transfer over by hand the tiny pieces for the interiors of letters like “o” and “a”).  I used hot glue to attach paint-stirrers to the backs of the signs so we could pop ’em in our back pockets and easily whip them out when offering up a hint to a perplexing stare.

The third phrase, “and listen,” was for Junie’s onesie, so I cut it on white vinyl and then simply placed it atop some blue vinyl on her onesie to help cover up the original logo.  We figured for the most part it would be covered by one of her bibs, but we could flip up the bib for dramatic impact when revealing her “sign.”  Fun, right?

And that was it for the DIY-ing!  All that was left was to grab a pair of shades for each of us to complete our 90s hip hop look!  And to the backyard we went for a family photo shoot.

Juniper was a bit upset she’s too leetle to enjoy any actual candy this Halloween…

…that and she was feeling the effects of a nap strike that afternoon, poor dear.  Thought I’d include some outtakes from her meltdown because…well, it’s “Real Life Life Baby.”  Plus, she was totally pulling off a hip-hop-style grimace.

  2. This cracks me up so much! Almost made me forget that I am not a Halloween fan haha whenever I see that video, I’m always so thankful that I was only 2 when it came out, because if I had been a teenager, I think I would’ve been reeeaally into Vanilla Ice, and well.. that is more than a little embarassing! 😀
