3 Creative Onesies for Baby Girl & Heat Press Giveaway!
With the history of my baby onesie obsession, I’m sure most of you had a hunch it was only a matter of time before I started churning out some custom onesies for our baby girl. And in today’s post, I have not one, not two, but three new designs to share with you all. (And I even threw in a fourth oldie-but-goodie for good measure.)
You can bet I’ll be sharing the FREE cut files for each of these designs, so you can make ’em your own. And don’t be thrown off by my post title because each of these can easily be adapted to be gender-neutral or for a baby boy. Hooray for versatility!
Oh, and the best part? Stick with me to the end of this post because you have the chance to enter a giveaway to win a Heat Press so you can make custom onesies and t-shirts all the live-long day. And you’ll also find a slew of other fabric and apparel craft inspiration from my fellow Silhouette Challenge buddies. This will be your one-stop shop for inspiration. Let’s get this party started!
Little Adventurer
Finally, the nesting instinct has kicked in for me, and the past two weeks, I’ve been having fun dreaming and scheming the decor elements for Baby Girl’s nursery. And one thematic element that Mark and I want to include in that space is the theme of travel & adventure. So, think maps, boats, clouds…and of course, arrows!
So, it only seemed fitting to create a onesie “on theme” for our little adventurer!
And I had a blast building this arrow myself using the free font, Arrow Crafter, by the talented Kay from Clever Someday. She has an array of different segments for the arrows you can mix n’ match using alpha and numerical characters. Pretty nifty, eh? Definitely nab that font if you don’t already have it.
Change up the colors of your heat transfer vinyl, and you could gift this gem to anyone you like who is expecting a little one. Because let’s be honest, where babies are, adventure will follow.
Fonts used: *Ariadne Script, Ariadne Sans, Arrow Crafter
HTV used: smooth salmon
Aunt Tribute
I did something a bit unconventional for Christmas last year. When I handed my sister Lisbeth her wrapped gift, I gave this disclaimer:
“This is a gift for you, but it’s one that we’ll keep.”
I felt very Mad-Hatter-esque with my riddling words, but she guessed even before opening up the tissue paper that it was a garment for her niece! Too clever, that one.
So, I give to you, the onesie gift to honor an aunt who happens to be a Zumba instructor and stellar dancer.
{Sidenote: For some mid-flight entertainment and video evidence of Aunt Lisbeth’s dance moves, here’s our Bridesmaids Dance from Lisbeth & Ransom’s wedding last summer. We had way too much fun with that ‘lil number.}
Those of you looking to customize your own onesie for an aunt or uncle (or grandparent or cousin) can use these sentence-starters as a jumping off point:
- I get my awesomeness from my…
- I get my ninja powers from my…
- I get my good looks from my…
- I get my sassiness from my…
Fonts used: Caferus Normal, KG Hard Candy Solid
HTV used: smooth black, smooth dark pink
Step 3. Field Hockey!
Thinking Closet regulars may remember a certain “Step 3. Salsa!” onesie that I made for my friend Gianna’s lil guy once-upon-a-baby-gift.
Well, I later adapted it for my friend Fran’s baby girl, since we played field hockey together in high school. 1998 State Champs! Woot woot!
And now that we have a baby girl of our own on the way, it only seemed fitting to make one for her, too! And if her kicks in the womb are any indication of what’s to come, we have quite the spunky-town athlete on our hands.
You can even swap out the text of “Step 3.” for other physical activities: surfing, four-wheeling, gymnastics…the possibilities are endless. (I wish I could remember where I initially saw this onesie to properly credit it…but there are a slew of similar type ones you can find with a Google search if you’d like some more inspiration.)
Fonts used: Apple LiGothic (Mac font), Academic M54
HTV used: smooth black, smooth neon pink
Free Cut Files
And remember, none of these onesie designs are locked in for girls alone. Definitely use those DIY customization skills of yours to choose colors and fonts and wording that will match the babies in your life! I hope they can serve as a launching pad for all manner of creative projects.
I’m offering all three designs fo’ FREE download to my lovely newsletter subscribers. Just sign up using the form below or by clicking HERE, and you’ll receive access to a folder with all 3 designs. {Fine print: These designs are for personal use and not to be used for commercial purposes.}
One More Onesie!
Oh, and as promised, I have an oldie-but-goodie to share, as well. This was one of the very first H.T.V. onesies I ever created for my friend Laura back in the day. We did theatre together in college, so I dusted off that old cut file and churned out one for our girl.
I suppose I might be putting words in her mouth with this one, but isn’t that what onesies are for? Taking advantage of the non-verbal stage while it lasts, right? {Snicker, snicker.}
Looking forward to lots of drama with our girl…hopefully the good kind!

Tips for Working with HTV
I’ve gone through detailed step by step tutorials for working with heat transfer vinyl (HTV) a few times before (here & here), so I’ll just share some quick tips n’ tricks here:
- Do NOT forget to flip your design horizontally before cutting. It should look like the mirror image. No one wants to waste perfectly good HTV.
- Feed your HTV into the machine (or stick it to the mat) shiny side DOWN. The shiny side is actually a plastic film that will peel away after ironing. You don’t want to cut through that!
- Always-always-always do a test cut before sending your design to your machine. If only I had heeded my own advice in the past, I would have saved myself from ruining some perfectly good HTV. When you run a few test cuts, you can determine if your blade needs to be higher or perhaps lower with a double-cut (in the past, the recommended setting of a 2 is sometimes too sharp with a brand new blade). You don’t want to cut through the entire sheet. But instead, aim for that “kiss cut” that cleanly cuts through the HTV only.
- Use a hook tool to peel away the negative space of your design.
- Pre-warm your pre-washed onesie with a dry iron before placing your HTV pieces on it.
- I like to use a ruler to make sure my design is properly centered.
- Place a thin cotton cloth or piece of parchment paper in between your iron and the onesie.
- Apply good solid PRESSURE when pressing your garment with your iron, approximately 20 seconds per section.
- The plastic film should peel away with ease when the HTV is properly applied. If not, allow it to cool 30 seconds and re-press.
- Be sure to turn your garment inside out and press the back-side, as well.
- Washing instructions: low heat, inside out. And if for some reason your HTV starts to peel up, you can always iron it back down again! However, it should not peel up if you’ve applied good solid pressure in the first place.
Phew! That list was pretty much a tutorial, but I never want to leave y’all in the lurch. Let me know if you have any HTV questions in the comments below. And don’t be too intimidated. It’s a really fun medium to work with…especially when it comes to itty bitty onesies.
