Tell Me Your Favorite Christmas Movies! (Pretty please?)

The Top Ten Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time...compiled by The Thinking Closet & Friends!

Alright, friends: I need your help.

I have taken it upon myself to compile a list of the Top 10 Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time.  Because I believe such a list needs created…and I was thoroughly dissatisfied with the Top Ten lists Google led me to.

Now, this is no small feat.  As you well know, there are a lot of really great Christmas movies out there.  But I want the must-sees.  The crème de la crème.  The ones you watch every Christmas without fail.

As some of you may recall, this past February, I sought your help when pulling together a list of the Top Ten Most Romantic Movies of All Time…and you delivered!

Well, I’m asking for your feedback again.  It should only take you a minute or two, since I’ve created a Google Form where you can just checkmark your favorite movies from a list of over 65.

But before you complete the form, if you want to be truly unbiased, take just a few seconds to think of what would appear on your list of favorites.  In fact, let me give you a hypothetical scenario to help prep you.  Close your eyes.  Actually, what am I saying?  Keep your eyes open.  You need to read this!

It’s a few days before Christmas and miraculously, your shopping and gift wrapping are all done!  So are the dishes and the laundry and you even vacuumed up the dust bunnies beneath your bed!  So, with this pocket of free time, you decide to watch one of your favorite Christmas movies!  You pour yourself a cup of cocoa with marshmallows bobbing on the surface, pop in that beloved Christmas movie, and curl up on the couch beneath a cozy blanket.  Now, what movie is playing on the screen?  That one Christmas movie that you wanted to watch more than any other Christmas movie?  That one that just puts you in the holiday spirit and sends you to bed with visions of sugarplums dancing in your head?  Make note of that movie.  And maybe the a few other movies that come close to your number one.  These are the movies I want to know about!

As was the case with my Romantic Movies list, time period and genre are no object, so don’t be afraid to include some oldies but goodies…or some sci-fi Christmas films!  And there’s a spot in the form for write-ins if some of your favorites don’t appear.

I’ve embedded the form below or if it’s not showing up, click HERE.  {Update: the results are in!  Check out The Top Ten Greatest Christmas Movies of All Time.}

Thanks in advance for your help on this, friends.  This is going to be ten million times better with your valued input!

I’ll be back in one week, next Wednesday, December 18th, with the results – – just in time for you to get your Christmas movie queue in order, so that when that miraculous pocket of free time appears, you’ll know exactly what to do with it!

  1. The Grinch! Christmas just isn’t Christmas without it, haha. I think I could check off every one of those movies but I kept it to a minimum 😉
    Great idea, hon!
    Hugs,
    Jamie

    1. This certainly is the season for believing. Thanks for casting your vote, Dad! (You checked them off in the form, right? Want to make sure it’s “offish”!) Love to you Mr. Four-Days-Till-My-Birthday!

    1. Ha ha. No, YOU ROCK, Marilyn! Thanks for your enthusiasm and participation. Can’t wait to reveal the Top Ten….

    1. I sure hope you wrote that one in, Rachel! It’s ringing a bell, but I don’t think I’ve seen it in a very long time. Clearly, I need to rectify that situation! I love a good hard laugh…especially at crazy family moments. Lol. (Love your “Hugs & Hope” signature, by the way. I’ve never seen that before….)

      1. Aww, thanks, Miss Lauren! Yeah, I kinda figure ‘Hugs and Hope’ are two things noone can ever have too much of, and a little extra when someone is feeling down can make a big difference. 😉 I started using it when I opened my little etsy jewelry shop, but now I’m using it all over digi town. I recently came up with ‘Whimsy & Wonderment’, but dang… that’s a lot to type! lol LOVING your blog, btw! Your posts are definitely creative and fun!

        Hugs & Hope,
        rachel of OddModicum

        1. I’m glad you are using it! Yes, we all can use extra hugs and hope! (And I like “Whimsy & Wonderment,” too, mouthful or not. The alliteration gets me every time!)

Thanks for your kind words on the blog. So happy to have you and your fab self along for the ride!

Sweetness & Smiles, (now you’ve got me doing it!)
          Lauren

  2. Of all the ones I chose from your list, The Muppet Christmas Carol is my all-time, #1, absolute favourite. I watch it even when it isn’t Christmas time! Michael Caine was a fantastic Scrooge, and who could possibly play Bob Cratchit any better than Kermit?

    1. Isn’t it fabulous?! We have random video footage of my family and I quoting it as we skied down a hill in Lake Placid one winter. We had seen in the theatre and were obsessed (as well we should be). I haven’t seen it in so long, though. I must “dust it off!” (And I agree 100% with your statement about Kermit. He IS Bob Cratchit!)

  3. Such a great idea! Can’t wait to see the results!

I had to vote for THE one and only best Christmas movie! It should probably be included in the romantic movie category list as well, but I always watch it during the Holiday season. In fact I have already watched it 2 times this month!! I can’t get enough of it:

    The Holiday

Best MOVIE ever! 🙂 In my opinion!

    1. Eek! Jack Black and Kate Winslet are two of my favorite actors of all time…so of course, it’s a favorite for me, as well! (Ha ha, I love that you’ve seen it twice already this month. That’s true passion.) Thanks for casting your vote, Jane!

  4. Love Actually is so fabulous.

But we have a tradition of watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Christmas Eve… and it’s probably the movie that truly makes me feel like it’s Christmastime.

    1. I feel like I didn’t fully appreciate “It’s a Wonderful Life” until adulthood. And now, I feel like it’s a masterpiece with a gripping storyline and superb acting. It’s definitely a must-watch every Christmas!

  5. Love this survey! I’m a mixed bag on the movies. Our single kids come over Christmas Eve and we all watch movies together and eat all the wrong food – the junk food graze. We stay up until the wee hours of the morning watching movies and then they spend the night. We pick out several to watch, but Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is ALWAYS included as is Ralphie and the Christmas Story. “No BB gun – you might shoot your eye out!” lol lol

    1. “The junk food graze….” Ha ha. I love it! (And know it well.) Your family movie watching traditions sounds like a blast, Camille! Can I crash the party this year? Lol.

    2. Yes, “you will shoot your eye out!” is a classic line Camille! Of course, you can’t watch old movies without junk food. That is a requirement!

  6. I love movies hence I love Xmas movies! Great post Lauren. My favorites depend on my mood – for a classic it is White Christmas hands down, I saw it at Leu Gardens a few years ago and it was awesome. If I’m feeling the need for a romantic comedy, (you know the need to grab a box of kleenex and chocolates?) then it’s Love Actually and if I want to laugh my head silly, then it is National Lampoon Christmas. Every time we put up Christmas lights I have to tell my boyfriend “We can’t compete with the Griswolds!” so, I am surprised that you didn’t include all the many holiday classics from the Hallmark Channel. Ok I couldn’t say that with a straight face. Anyways, I can’t wait to see your final list. I’m sure it will be great! Happy Holidays!

    1. I still have yet to check out the outdoor movies at Leu Gardens…must change that! And I loved hearing all the movies you enjoy when different moods strike. It seems that without fail, I can enjoy White Christmas, whatever the mood. It was a movie my sister and I enjoyed as wee ones…so it’s practically part of our DNA. (Yep, the “Sisters” song was one we sang together many a time. Lol.)

Can’t wait to share the results next week! Eek!

      1. You must put Leu Gardens movie night on your list of things to do! You can bring your chairs and blankets, pack a picnic and bring a bottle of wine (or two) and spend a great fun evening with friends or a romantic evening with your husband. It’s especially nice when we have a nice cool night. Check out their website, it is the first Friday of the month, the next one is February 7th. I hope you get to try it out. Can’t wait to see the final list!

        1. I’m going to mark our calendar, so we make sure it happens! Thanks for the skinny! Sounds right up our alley.

  7. This was such fun to do and a reminder that I have lots more movies to watch before Christmas.

Hallmark movies are becoming a favorite thing to do even though they are somewhat formulaic. They’re easy to watch while doing other things.

I had forgotten about Claymation Christmas! How could I? I smile just thinking about Carol of the Bells played by and ON the bells and I am still chuckling over National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation that we watched together last Friday night. I would love to listen to Emily@Two Purple Couches and her family work quotes from it into their daily conversation. Looking forward to the list next wednesday! xxoo

    1. I still have such sweet memories of you laughing to tears while ironing my hubby’s scrubs. What a sweet, joy-filled Mama you are! Miss having you nearby. But looking forward to later in the month when we can enjoy some more of these Christmas classics together in person!

      1. Can’t wait to watch some more with you and your hubby! Dad and I both submitted our favorites. Is there a way for you to tell we successfully submitted them?

        1. That was a special memory of watching It’s A Wonderful Life with all my children during your visit after Christmas!

  8. The unofficial “rite of passage” into my husband’s family is to be able to quote all of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. And we take every opportunity, year-round, to work quotes into our daily conversation. We’re absolutely nuts. But it’s awesome.

    1. Ha ha ha ha! I think I’d enjoy hanging out with you and your husband’s family very much! Nuts is right up my alley. 😉

  9. Ha! I love this idea! And this will be just in time, too: Josh and I are spending Christmas in Boston just the two of us, so I’m coming up with lists of extra special christmasy activities we can do together to keep it merry even though we’ll be away from family. You bet we will be watching movies on this list! 🙂

    1. You and me both, Pam. I grew up on the vintage classics…and Christmas just doesn’t feel like Christmas if we don’t watch them. Yes, I cannot wait to see the results! Thanks so much for voting and for sharing with your followers on Google+ and Pinterest! I appreciate it, friend.

    1. I haven’t seen The Family Man! Is that with Nicolas Cage? I’ll have to add it to my “must watch” list. And I hope you enjoy the romantic movie round-up, Emily. So many of them are year-round classics!

    1. I had to include it since it was included in so many “Top 50” and “Top 100” lists! Though I’m ashamed to say I haven’t yet seen it myself. Adding it to the Netflix queue for sure! (And hey, thanks for the bloglovin’ follow, Brynne!)

  10. Love this idea! Admittedly, I generally loathe romantic comedies, so the last one was a little bit useless for me, but hey! Not everyone can love mindless blockbusters like myself 😉
We always watch Love Actually (the version without the nudity, because that’s awkward with the ‘rents), and I personally LOVE Fred Clause.. it’s like Bad Santa, except a little less raunchy and with Vince Vaughn in rare form, so I’m a happy camper.
    Can’t wait for the results!

    1. Ha ha. Yes, you are so right about the awkward nudity parts in Love Actually. In fact, I’m perking up to know there’s a more parent-friendly version! Might need to bring that to New York this December when we visit. And I also need to add Fred Clause to my must-see list! Vince Vaughn is always a guaranteed laugh. Thanks for casting your vote, friend!

  11. what a wonderful idea! love this! Christmas movies are the best. my family always has them playing in the background while decorating or a family get togethers. the claymaion series are by far our favorites. I just love them!

    1. Yeah! I couldn’t agree more about the Claymation series. Have you seen “A Claymation Christmas”? It came out during the 80s or early 90s, so it might have been a bit before your time, but we have it captured on VHS and it is a family treasure. It is hilarious at times, poignant at times, and beautifully executed! Two dinosaurs host it (to jog your memory), and the carol of the bells bit always has my family in stitches. Now you’ve inspired me to dig up that old tape and watch it this year!
