20 MORE Punny Halloween Costume Ideas
Last year, Mark and I pulled off Halloween costumes that were both last-minute and punny. {Win-win.}
We dressed up as the Black-Eyed Ps and gave out candy to the 5 kids trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. We even sat out in the street to lure them down our dead-end. Our costume was met with a look of confusion, right before the parent would go, “Ohhhh! I get it.”
Because every good Halloween costume requires some brain power, right?
{Keep tellin’ yourself that, Lauren.}
So, this year, we thought it would be fun to embrace the Punny Halloween Costume theme again, especially since we decided to throw a Costume Party!
So, I scoured my round-up from last year of 20 Punny Halloween Costumes…and boy were there some knee-slappers in the bunch. (I mean, the Cereal Killer? The Firefox? The Farmer in the Dell? Pretty stinkin’ hilarious literal interpretations of the words.)
But I wanted something new, something fresh, something extra clever!
And here’s what we came up with. Can you guess our puns?
That’s right! He’s “When Life Gives You Lemons!”
Now, mine is a bit harder. In fact NO ONE was able to guess mine. So extra credit points for anyone who can figure it out without scrolling down to the answer.
I’m “A Blessing in Disguise!” One probably only my punny Dad can figure out, but I’m okay with that.
The Quick How To:
I used my trusty dusty Silhouette machine to create the designs for the t-shirts. For Mark’s, I used red heat-transfer vinyl {HTV vinyl tutorial HERE} and grabbed an image of the classic LIFE magazine logo for the design. For my shirt, I just used regular ole’ vinyl since I wanted it to be removable {vinyl tutorial HERE}, and I created the design in the negative space of a circle using the font, Apple LiGothic.
The lemons we picked up at our local Publix grocery store {and we fully planned to actually make lemonade at our party, but we got distracted by games instead}, and I borrowed the trench-coat from a friend (*HERE’s a similar one) and picked up the “Disguise” glasses at Party City for $5 (HERE’s a similar pair). Pretty budget friendly costumes if you ask me! *I’ve included Amazon affiliate links for your convenience.
Our initial inspiration? Well, in my extensive internet searching for The-Punny-Halloween-Costumes-to-Rule-Them-All, I came across this picture, which inspired Mark’s costume. And mine actually came from an article on Halloween Costumes on a Budget (without photos). I’ll never be able to use the phrase “blessing in disguise” without a snort-laugh again.

These are sooooo punny. The punniest one I ever saw was a 10 year old with a large leaf stapled to his ball cap. I asked what is was and he told me “A leaf blower”. And he proceeds to blow the leaf… I lost it.
I couldn’t guess yours either. 🙁 I suppose the “pun gene” skipped over me, or it was just too clever for my blood. But I do love your Halloween Punny Costumes! I’ll never do a plan ol’ character costume again…you’ve set the bar high. As it should be! 🙂
I actually did the Black Eyed P’s idea for Pop Day for Homecoming Week this year. No one could figure it out. I got the idea from my teacher a few years ago.
How fun! And so strange that folk couldn’t figure it out. Sigh. People these days…. I think the punny humor is more of my parents’ generation, but I’m glad we’re bringing it back, Catherine!
Hi Lauren:
Thanks for your wonderful and funny costume ideas, I went to a party last night as the black eye peas and won most creative at the party, Everyone love it.
Thanks again
Joyce
You two are darling! I got Mark’s, but I would agree yours was a toughy. Turned out very cute and clever. Also, I find it hard to believe your Silhouette is very dusty as you break that bad boy out so often there’s no time for it to acquire dust. Keep ’em coming!
You would have liked a costume my mom and her sister made many years ago. They created two giant purple stuffed costumes (grapes) and sewed on angry facial expressions…furrowed angry brow, scowling frown, etc. You got it: The Grapes of Wrath.
Ha ha. You are right! “Dusty” is probably not the appropriate word to describe my Cameo…maybe “trusty, Siberian husky” would be more apt for my hard-working machine! (Don’t ask me how long it took me to come up with that rhyme. I’m a dork.)
YES! The Grapes of Wrath costume is in my round-up this year; I thought it was hilarious. And that makes me love you and your punny family all the more to know your Mom and her sister tackled it!)
I love a good groaner- the black-eyed peas are perfect! 🙂
Ha ha. A girl after my own heart! And thanks! We might have to resurrect the Black-Eyed Ps one of these years. It was SO easy, plus, couples costumes are just so much fun.
Ha!!! Super cute ideas. I’d love for you to link up to The DIY’ers link party! http://homecomingmn.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-diyers-35.html
Glad to give you a chuckle, Kayla!
What is perfect about these are that many of them are so easy, too! Even without a silhouette machine! Although that does seem to make it look better, easier! 🙂
Yeah – – last year, I managed the Ps on our Black Eyed P costumes without a Silhouette; I just bought a sheet of duct tape and traced the Ps from a print-out using an x-acto knife. So, it’s do-able, but the Silhouette made it 10x easier. And now, Mark’s plain white tee has a fun logo on it…that reminds him of our party night!
Big hugs Lauren! Thanks again! You are awesome! And I love the costume ideas. These are my type of costumes for sure!
Of course! So delighted to join in on your linky party fun! Glad you’re a fan of the punny costumes, too.
I LOVE your costume! So creative! I definitely didn’t guess it, but that makes it even better. Nice work! 🙂
Aw, thanks, Lindze! And thanks for the vote of confidence even though NO ONE (not even my punny Dad) has been able to guess my costume. Your comment makes me feel like that’s a-okay!
I LOVE the blessing in disguise idea. My teenager and I had fun looking at the other ideas too.
Love the idea of you and your teen checking out these ideas together; (puns are always funnier with a buddy, I do declare). Happy (almost) Halloween!
You’re hilarious!! So clever. And yep, you got me on that blessing in disguise! Do you stay up all night thinking of these or do they just come to you? You rock!
Hugs,
Jamie @ somuchbetterwithage.com
Ha ha. So glad you enjoyed them, Jamie! And no, I can’t take complete credit for these ideas (though I’m tempted next year to not search the internet AT ALL when brainstorming my costume and just trust that the brain God gave me can come up with something punny…we shall see!). Hugs back atcha!
These ideas are hilarious, Lauren! I’ll have to pin this because I have such a hard time thinking of “punny” costume ideas. I’m stopping by from Inspire Me Please blog hop & so glad I did!
Yay! I’m delighted to know that this post made you laugh and perhaps gave you some punny Halloween costume inspiration! DO let me know if you end up taking on a punny costume this year. I’d LOVE to see it!
These are my FAVORITE Halloween costumes!! Halloween always pisses me off because I feel like all girls use it as an excuse to wear something slutty and get away with it. That’s why I try to do the complete opposite of that punny costumes are the way to go! Thanks for sharing- I need to figure out what I’m going to be!
I know the girls you speak of, and they need to get with the program and recognize the value of clever, punny costumes and not default to the brainless “sexy nurse” option. We’re smarter than that! Can’t WAIT to see what you end up being this year, Steph. Will you let me know if you post pics? I’m bracing myself for that full-bellied chuckle I’m going to have over it!
Yeah I definitely did not guess your costume! But come on… what a brilliant idea!!! Loving all the puns and creativity!!! The photo booth also looks amazing and I am sure it was a major hit at your party!!! Orlando needs to be closer to Toronto. Stat!
Affirmative on the geography shift of Orlando and Toronto. Who do we need to make our proposal to about remedying that situation? The government? The U.N? God? And thanks for noting the photo booth! Will have a tutorial on the blog next for how I made it (twas SUPER cheap and SUPER easy…one of my favorite combinations). Have a happy weekend, my Fri 5 friend!
ha!ha! love your costumes Lauren
I got your hubby’s right away but yours it took me more than a minute to get it ha!ha! 🙂
you are both funny! 🙂
Thanks, Ingrid! Always glad to give you a laugh. And my costume was tough; seriously, no one has been able to guess it so far…not sure if that means it was a success or a failure…but I sure had fun! Ha ha.
I love a clever costume! And no, i couldn’t guess yours 🙂
It’s a tricksy one! Don’t feel too badly, Steph. I have yet to meet someone who CAN guess it. My Father might be up to the task…I’ll keep ya posted.
Love your costumes! Thanx for sharing them at THT.
Aw, thanks, Pamela! And thanks for hosting such a fab party. Was excited to be early for once! Ha ha.
HeeHee! Love your ideas! Talk about lateral thinking! My guess of your costume (blessing in disguise which is brilliant btw) was “The Gesundheit Institute.” shows my medical background/ focus. 🙂
Patch Adams is a hero of mine and I had the privilege of attending a lecture by him when he visited Australia.
Wow, I love the way your brain works. Gesundheit Institute is super clever! You’re a smart cookie, Sharon, ya know that? And how neat that you got to attend a lecture by the real live Patch Adams. I’m sure my husband (also in medicine) would do anything to hear him! (Especially in a land as lovely as Australia.) We hope to get there someday!
Haha, these are great! Thanks for the laugh. I wore a punny costume last year (I was a fork in the road) and it was a big disappointment. Dunno if I’m ready to try another one this year—-apparently I work with a quite literal bunch!
Oh no! I’m so disappointed to hear that your “fork in the road” wasn’t met with greater fanfare (which it well deserved). Don’t lose faith the punny costumes, Jennifer. Stand strong and exercise that verbal wit of yours at your work costume party! Second time’s the charm, right?
Love it! I appreciate a good pun all day long, especially one in costume 🙂 My husband and I don’t really do Halloween, but a few years ago we were going to party and decided last-minute we should probably put a small amount of effort into a costume. So, the Hubs wore a letter “e”, and I wore a giant paperclip necklace fashioned out of cardboard and aluminum foil, and we were…. (wait for it)… an E-Mail Attachment! bwaahahahahahaa
Oh my goodness – – you two are my favorite people EVER with that couple’s costume! That is so clever! Did you think of it yourselves? Did your fellow party-goers appreciate it for all its punny worth? Bah ha ha ha…I’m chucking here on the couch just thinking about it. And I love the simplicity of the costumes themselves. Those are the best ones!
You both guys are the best couple ever! LOL. I enjoyed so much this post! I gotta try to have some pics like those next year perhaps! Thanks so much for sharing so much joy!
XOXO
Cami
You’re too sweet, Camila. That’s high praise! And I think you did just fine with your costume photos for this year; the photo session with the Mama and Daughter Owl seriously had my eyebrows raised in upside-down checkmarks the whole time, in the, “They’re so cute, it hurts!” kind of way. So thank YOU for sharing that joy with me, too! (It’s a wonderful cycle, isn’t it?)
You know I’m a fan of home-made, clever costumes. Pinning this post for future, fun parties. I think you are right, your dad just may figure out your costume…but I had to sneak a peak.
I do know that – – you helped me put together my Angels in the Outfield costume and made my 50s girl poodle skirt and my felt Peter Pan costume and so many more, I can’t even count them all. Clearly, the apple doesn’t fall far…though our “handmade” costumes are a whole lot less intricate that yours were!
Really curious to see if Dad can guess my costume. If he can, he’ll be the first one!
He was close but no cigar! “Grouch-choo” he said. I probably have all of those hand-made costumes somewhere…will have to find them again one of these days!
Very very clever nonetheless. I’m so impressed by the hidden puns in this costume between Dad’s guess and Christine’s “chaplin” and Sharon’s “Gesundheit Institute.” And yes, it’d be fun to dig up some of those handmade costumes from days of old. We could start by looking in that pink dress-up trunk!
You guys are the best! And I love that your hubby gets in on the action, too! Funnest couple ever! Hope you’re having a great week, friend!
~Abby =)
Aw, thanks, Abby! Yes, he was a trooper. I ran a few ideas by him that I thought he’d like, and he was all over the Lemons one. I also think his love of parties and having people over supersedes any insecurities about dressing up in a silly costume. So punny costumes for the win! {And I have not forgotten that you grew up with a punny Dad, too, so you share an appreciation for verbal irony such as this. Yet another thing we share in common.} Happy week to you, too, friend.
I love how your mind works – you crack me up! I tell everyone about the Black-eyed P’s – too funny, I mean punny!
Ha ha. Glad to entertain you, Jeanie! Especially with the Black-Eyed Ps costumes. They may need to be resurrected at a future Halloween; especially considering they really only were seen by 5 kids and a few parents…though their audience on blogland has been a bit wider, so there’s that! P.S. How was your long ride?
Lauren, I LOVE these! 😀 You are so clever!
Ha ha. Wish I could take credit for coming up with these ideas in the first place, but they were fun to interpret in our own way!
Too cute Lauren!
Thanks, Tori! We had a lot of fun with these. Is it strange I’m already plotting for next year…and it’s not even officially Halloween yet?
You make me laugh, Lauren! Love them all! 🙂
Thank for the support and love, Katherine! If I can make you chuckle, then I call that a good day!
You are too too punny!!! You make me laugh so hard!!! And yes, Lauren, you are indeed a blessing in disguise! I couldn’t think of a more fitting costume for you, m’dear!! Such a creative soul!! I love it and I love your punny hubby for playing along!! Ya’ll are the best!!!
Aw, thanks for your enthusiastic response, Candace! You sure know how to make a girl (and guy) feel swell. I’m seriously beaming from ear to ear right now. And any creativity in the punny department comes from my punny Father; he’s to blame.
Hooray for couples who aren’t afraid to dress up and make themselves look silly for the sake of a good costume. And of course, I’m thinking of you and your Papa Smurf hubby! (If we lived closer, we’d totally need to go on a double date…in costume! How fun would that be?)
Love your punny costumes from this year! So great! And oh my goodness — swine flu is awesome!!
Kenley
Ha ha. Glad you appreciated them, Kenley, especially the oh so cheesy Swine Flu one (who am I kidding, they’re all cheesy!). Do you have any occasion to dress up in costume for this Halloween? If so, I think you know what you need to dress as…. 😉
