Animal Place-Card Holders at Or So She Says

If you would have told me a few weeks ago that I’d have a gold rhino at my breakfast table, I would have laughed you out of town.

“Well, look who’s laughing now,” chuckles the gold rhino…at my breakfast table.

Animal Place-Card Tutorial via The Thinking Closet

So, remember those sketch pen place cards that I shared yesterday?  Well, they needed a fun way to be displayed, and somehow, my brain landed on the idea of taking plastic toy animals from the Dollar Tree and giving them a makeover using some gold spray paint.  Add a curly-Q of galvanized wire, and ladies and germs, you have yourself a nifty Animal Place-Card Holder.

I’d love for you to be my special guest at the metaphorical breakfast table of blogland today and pay me a visit over at Or So She Says!   That’s where you’ll find my full tutorial, so that you can make your own gold animal place card holders.

And don’t forget that I’ve got a Silhouette Portrait with Designer Edition software to give away!  Click here to join in on the fun and earn up to 11 entries today.  And happy (almost) Fourth of July, everyone!

  1. I have been searching for inexpensive place card holders that are lions for a while! My husband is an alumni adviser for his fraternity and they are having an event that these would be perfect for!! Thanks for much for tip!!

    1. Yes, that wording totally comes from the gold seashells. It lives on! As does the gold! 😉 Thanks for instilling in me a love for making guests feel welcome with place-cards all those years ago.

  2. cute cute cute!
I’ll be shopping the toy aisle at the dollar store before our next big family dinner – no – wait! I have buckets of those toys downstairs already!!! even better!
thanks for the inspiration, once again 🙂 Hope you’re have a blast today!

    1. Yay! I love that you already have some animal toys at the ready for a little spray paint makeover! I’m sure family dinners are your place are already loads of fun…and just imagining some animal place-card holders at the table along with you all makes me smile. It’d be quite the herd, wouldn’t it?! 😉

And thanks for your well-wishes, Linda. My Fourth was loverly! I hope the same was true for you and your family!

    1. You’re so sweet, Abby! Thanks for taking the time to check it out. I kinda love that they’re a creation that could be enjoyed by all ages. The gold sort of makes it okay for us adults to dig ’em, too! (Or at least that’s what I tell myself.) Happy Monday to you!

    1. “Rhino-riffic” is officially my new favorite word. And you bet I’m going to find a way to use it in a sentence tomorrow.

(P.S. I haven’t forgotten about you and your fabulous View Along the Way! I’ll be back to catch up on my reading soon, bestie!)

    1. Thanks, Mom! They’re cute in plastic goldified form…though I would not want to run into most of these suckers in real life. No, I think I’ll look at the real rhino from the safety of the safari jeep, thankyouverymuch. 😉

    1. I remember that post quite well! In fact, I do believe that I had these toy animals in my possession at the time and was brewing up an idea even then of how to use them. I remember your post being VERY inspirational (as all Learner Observer posts are). Ha ha. And I agree – – the rhino is one of my faves…perhaps second only to the elephant. Mark favors the lion and was really glad I chose to put his place-card in that one for my “photo shoot.” #itsthelittlethings

  3. I LOVE these!! Honestly, I think if we had a dollar store here, I’d go crafting insane – we have one Euro stores, I think, but for some odd reason, a Euro always seems worth more to me? Dunno.
What I DO know is that I am going to keep this idea in mind for when (if ever haha) I move out from my parents’ again! You’re so creative!

    1. Crafting-insane in the best sense, of course! And yes, a Euro is definitely more than a dollar right now (sad story), so I can understand feeling less excited about that. What sort of things do they carry at Euro stores? Any potential craftiness?

Happy to know you’re storing this one away for future use. And hey, you never know. You could totally rock your parents’ minds if you surprised them one dinner with animal place-card holders atop their plates. 😉 I dare ya!

  4. I love it…..”Ladies and Germs”….so very funny! My side hurts from laughing so hard.

I adore your place card holders…I want to make some to use for reminder notes to my “Germ”….they would be so cute by the door or wherever a “To Do” or a “Don’t Do” note needs to be placed.
Thanks again for your wonderful craftiness!!!

    1. Ha ha. I’m glad you picked up on the “Ladies and Germs” reference. That’s a favorite of mine. My Dad used to say it, and if my memory serves me correctly, I believe it was a regular greeting on a popular TV variety show. The Google could probably tell us!

And what a great idea to use the place-card holders for reminder notes! I just left my “germ” a TO DO note this morning, kindly requesting the removal of a dead insect in our kitchen. (Ah, the joys of Floridian life!) I might have to use a rhino to deliver the word next time. He really does mean business. 😉

Thanks for your ever-uplifting comments, Kristine!

  5. Lauren, these are awesome! I am already thinking of all of these great theme parties to use them with! Gold paint for more adult parties… multiple colors for a children’s circus/carnival theme…. either baby blue or light pink (or both) for a baby shower.
    Kenley

    1. A sign of a hostess extraordinaire: always thinking of parties and ways to make guests feel welcome! That’s you to a T, Kenley! And I love the idea of doing baby blue or light pink on the animals for a baby shower. They could then double as gifts to send home with the expectant mother for nursery decor! (You could spell out the child’s name on pieces of paper displayed in the curled wire.) Thanks for opening my mind to so many potential uses for these guys!

  6. Lauren these look so pretty in gold and as I told you, my son has them so I might just have to steal them from him 🙂 ha!ha! I read your tutorial and I might have to steal your idea too! whoa! I’m all about stealing today! 🙂
wish you a happy July 4th Lauren and a great week too!

    1. Steal away, my friend! It would be a true honor to have THE Ingrid from Now At Home Mom try one of my projects or ideas. 😉 Hope you had a happy Canada Day! Thought of you and all of my Canadian bloggy buddies that day! (Love how blogging connects us to so many people around the world.)
