I Heart Labels: Sugar & Flour Jar Edition | The Thinking Closet

I am one of those people for whom it is one of life’s big thrills to label things.  Yes, I’m a dork type A, an oldest sibling, a perfectionist…all of those personality traits that point straight to label-loving.  Yes, I totally own a label maker…you know, one of these:

Label Maker
Brother PT-80 P-touch Electronic Labeling System (affiliate link)

Although I’m not into labeling “tax forms” as this photo would suggest, when I taught English, I did label nearly every single thing in my classroom.  Scissors and tape dispensers and boxes of markers are much less likely to “walk off” when boldly labeled with my last name, and even if they do, they often find their way back home.

Now that I have a Silhouette, I’m starting to realize that it’s like one big label maker of its own, full of labeling potential.  I just hadn’t tapped into it yet.  Until now….

I decided that my glass sugar and flour jars needed some label action of their own…one wants to protect against baking blunders at all costs.  (“Is it sugar?  Is it flour?  How do I know?”)  So, I decided to whip up some labels in Silhouette Studio.

Now, when someone says, “whip up,” I know I often roll my eyes and think, “Sure!  If you’re Martha Stewart.  I probably need to block out a whole afternoon for this step….”  But for realz, everyone can access their inner Martha and whip these suckers up in no time flat.  How?  Well, I’m going to share my not-so-secret secret.  I created these labels…using a font!  You heard me correctly: a font.

You can download a free font called KG Flavor & Frames, and with that font, every letter in the alphabet and symbol corresponds to a different frame or shape.  How sweet is that?  The frame I used happened to be a lower-case “b.”  Here’s the font-at-a-glance so you can see all of the inspiring shapes this font boasts:

Doesn’t this make the labeler in you swoon?  If not, then perhaps the mustache-i-fier?  (Try saying that five times fast.)  And guess what?  There are plenty more free Dingbats shape fonts where this one came from….  I may or may not have gone batty for Dingbats.  {Tee hee.}

But back to the project.  So, I created a frame with one keystroke using my new KG Flavor and Frames font.  Then, I added text to my frames using the font Engravers MT already on my computer, used the offset tool to thicken it a bit, and increased the character spacing to 115%.  And that was that.  So like I said…I whipped up some labels.  {Cheeky grin.}

Free Jar Labels Cut File for use with Silhouette Studio | The Thinking Closet

I was really inspired by the frosted kitchen jar labels by Make It & Love It from my Frosted Vinyl Round-Up…so I took out my roll of frosted vinyl and went to work.

Frosted Vinyl | The Thinking Closet

I decided to use the negative space to define the text, so I weeded out the letters and the inner strip of the border.

I’ve been using clear contact paper as a substitute for transfer tape, and it has been working wonderfully.  Be be forewarned: once placing even a small portion of the vinyl on glass, there’s no turning back.  So, I smacked those puppies on there, peeled away my contact paper, and felt that sense of relief that comes with another unlabeled object…labeled.  Sigh.

The Best Part

Oh, and I didn’t even tell you the best part about this project!  I got to put my Silhouette Cameo to work alongside ANOTHER Silhouette Cameo.

I Heart Labels: Sugar & Flour Jar Edition | The Thinking Closet

That’s right.  This creation was a product of a Silhouette party I shared with my bloggy buddy Jen from de Jong Dream House.  She and her family were in Orlando on vacation, and we made it a priority to meet in person for the first time and share some crafty time together.  Here we are making a run to Hobby Lobby last Wednesday to buy (what else?) craft supplies….

Hobby Lobby Run! | The Thinking Closet

And here we are on Thursday at our place doing what we do best: letting our creativity splish, splash, and spill.

Hobby Lobby Run! | The Thinking Closet

I’m really proud of Jen because this was her very first time using her new Cameo, and she created some vinyl toilet lid labels like these, as well as a really cute HTV t-shirt for her darling son.  And yes, he got to wear it during their trip to the Kennedy Space Center.  You can keep your eyes out on her blog for a more detailed tutorial once she gets back home from vacay.

3-2-1 Blast-Off! by Jen from de Jong Dream House

As her Silhouette 101 instructor, I gave her an A++, not only for achivement, but for attitude.  I don’t think a smile ever left her face, even when we had a minor craft fail with some black HTV from Hobby Lobby.  Oh no.  It takes much more than that to snuff out Jen’s crafting fire!

  1. I just recently purchased an Epson label maker but I think this post has officially convinced me that I ALSO need to invest in a Silhouette Cameo. I’m a little intimidated by terminology that I’ve never heard before, like “contact paper” and “transfer tape” but I’m hoping I’ll figure these out over time 🙂 My question for you is, how difficult is it/would it be to remove Silhouette-printed vinyl labels off of glass? I’m specifically thinking that there will be times when I will want to permanently change up a jar to say something different without throwing that jar away. Also, I haven’t even opened the label maker yet. Should I return it if I get the Silhouette or do they serve different enough purposes to justify keeping both? Thanks in advance!

    1. The cut file I provided in the post is only for use with Silhouette Studio, however, if you download the fonts I mention in my tutorial, you can totally create your own version in a Word Processing program to print out. And if you wanted to turn your print-out into a vinyl creation using an x-acto knife, here’s a tutorial you can follow by my friend Kristy. Just start at step 3! Good luck, Anum.

    1. She was indeed! One of those gals you meet and feel like you’ve known your whole life. And it was so wonderful having you in our home TWICE this spring. Highlights of the year for us, for sure!

    1. Thanks, Laura Jane! I know you are a connoisseur of cute jar labels, so this means a lot coming from you. And I haven’t had any trouble at all using contact paper as transfer tape…just be sure to have a credit card on hand to help you along, and you’re good to go!

  2. I love these labels! Thanks for posting this great project. I tried to download the fonts, but for some reason it says that they can’t be downloaded. I’m a registered user at dafont, so not sure if it’s my computer or what. Boo! I wanted to do this project.

    1. Really? That’s a bummer! I tried it again, Linda, and it downloaded for me, no problem. So don’t give up! Maybe it’s a glitch with your browser. Can you try with another browser or from another computer? I’m using Google Chrome if that makes any difference. Also, you might check around to see if the font is offered on other free font sites; it very well might be!

  3. I love them, they look pretty and they look much better than the ones with chalkboard like mine, they erase every time I picked them up! 🙂 So fun to have met another blogger and to buy craft supplies with her; so fun! well if one day you visit Montreal, I hope I will get to see you too and craft or spray paint something ha!ha! 🙂

    1. I would love to spend a day in Montreal spray painting and crafting with THE Ingrid! Someday…. And I know your frustration with the chalk on chalkboard labels rubbing off! That’s why I’ve taken to using a permanent white paint marker…defeats the purpose of the chalkboard, but I love the look nonetheless! 😉

    1. Thanks, Kelly! A Silhouette for your birthday would be lovely, wouldn’t it? Or maybe it can be your reward after you successfully migrate to self-hosted WordPress…. 😉

  4. Love your sugar and flour labels! Label dorks, I mean…Label Aficionados…unite!!
And as a side note…I like the glass containers for your flour and sugar. How much do they each hold?
    Kenley

      1. Thanks for the link! They are really fun jars — alas they are too small for what I’m looking for. Need something to hold 25 lbs. for when I start ordering spelt flour. Of course for something that size I pry will not be finding anything “pretty”….lol

        1. I’m intrigued by these massive quantities of flour that you need! What about getting one of those vintage lemonade jars that has a spigot? And you could just turn the spigot to the back, so it looks like one big glass jar? Here’s a collection of them.

          1. That might work. Thanks!
Hoping in the next six months to start to order spelt flour in bulk. Most economical (because of shipping cost) to order in larger quantities so I don’t have to re-order every couple weeks. I’m making the transition to having all of our bread type products (sandwich bread, rolls, baguettes, etc.) be from scratch.

          2. Wow! What an exciting endeavor. Looking forward to staying in the loop on all of your bread making adventures on Green Door Hospitality!

  5. I would so be labeling if I had a silhouette. I love the frosted vinyl on glass. Using the negative space for the letters turned out FABULOUS! 🙂 Of course, I am jealous that some wonderful bloggy friend got to spend some crafternoon with you. She is one lucky duck. Her shirt turned out really cute! {I sooooo need a silhouette… is Christmas here yet?}

    1. Thanks for the positive comment on the negative space (sorry, cheesy, I know…but I know you don’t judge!). Aw, and Christmas will be here before we know it, Bethany…especially at the rate that this spring has been flying by. And we shall get our crafternoon together one day, Bethany. I have faith!

  6. These are adorable! I also love the jars you are using – very pretty! And also thank you (!!) for alerting me to that dingbat (how cute is that word?) font! It is now downloaded and on my computer. Yay! On the contrary, I am quite angry that you included a link to all of Da Font’s dingbat fonts. How could you do this, Lauren? Now I have been sifting through pages of awesome fonts and there is no end in sight.
Your bloggy meetup is so cute and Jen is adorable – love her smile! This post also made me smile as usual!

I have one random comment for you – I noticed your Bloglovin’ link (under your picture) takes you to your Bloglovin’ feed instead of your profile page where users can follow you. If you take the “feed” part out of the URL, it should redirect to your Bloglovin’ profile page. 🙂

    1. Lol. Melyssa, I did exactly the same as you, and looked through EVERY SINGLE dingbat and downloaded a bunch more to play with. I suppose I wanted to take you all down with me! Mwah ha ha. 😉

Isn’t her smile the greatest? It never left her face. Jen was such a lovely person to spend a day with.

And I appreciate the heads-up about my Bloglovin’ page. Not sure why I had it going to the feed, but I’ll go on in and make the change. Thanks for lookin’ out, friend! 🙂

  7. Support group for label-lovers? I’m smiling at the way you think, Lauren!! These came out really well and I so enjoyed seeing how you had a craft-partay with Jen! As Mom L said, can’t wait to see these (and YOU) in person soon!! xxoo

    1. Ha ha. Glad you appreciate my silly sense of humor! Heck, you in part gave it to me! 🙂

And the anticipation is mounting. T minus 27 hours….

    1. Thanks ever so much, Tanya! So glad that you dropped by and left a comment, so that I could stop by Twelve-O-Eight and gawk at your amazing creations. That yellow chair? To die for!

    1. Hopefully, one day, that will be us, Jennifer! 😉 You can teach me how to tackle a big DIY art piece!

  8. Your labels turned out super cute! I love to label things too and have created a lot of labels with my Silhouette. I have never seen that font – that’s perfect for label making. Thanks for posting the link to it!

    1. Sure thing! I hope the font proves useful for you in the future, Coley. I’m already dreaming and scheming how I can use it for more label projects around the house. 🙂

  9. Oh! They turned out so well! And I just realized that I didn’t rummage through your pantry! 🙂 Thank you again for such a fun day, excellent mentoring, and a delicious lunch!

Midsommarflicka, we’ll be in your neck of the woods in a few weeks!

    1. Ha ha. You’re too funny, wanting to rummage through my pantry; maybe you could have helped me re-organize it! Lol. I’m so glad that we got to spend such quality time together during your visit, Jen. I had a blast! And it really was a highlight to see you and your new Cameo bond! (I’m still in awe of how great that t-shirt turned out.) Enjoy the rest of your trip!

    2. Oh, how cool!
      So, welcome in Europe! 🙂

I will hopefully be on the other side of the border = Netherlands, as well in a few weeks. It was such a long time since I was there. I’m there a few times the year, because it’s really close to where my family lives (1,5 hours from my parents, just a few minutes from my grandma!) and it’s so great to go shopping there. Although there a just few kilometers between us it’s so different – and I love it!

Oh, and if you ever cross the border and come to Germany, let me know! Maybe you’re somewhere near me!

(“neck of the wood” …… this blogging and commenting is my new English class!)

      Love, Midsommarflicka

  10. If I had a label maker, or a silhouette (gah!!!! want one!!!!), I would. label. everything. I love these labels!! Super cute, and gotta love that frosted vinyl!! And I agree–labeling school supplies as a teacher is critical if you ever want to see any of your stuff again! lol

    1. Gabby I totally knew you were a labeler! There are just some things you can tell about a person…and who knows, maybe it was our labeling tendencies that in part helped forge our friendship! Ha ha. But seriously, I’m delighted to know that you share in that idiosyncrasy…something about it just makes me an even bigger fan of you (if that was even possible).

  11. Your glass jars are just lovely my friend… But I love that you have a label maker… so awesome. I’ve always wanted one of those – unfortunately I am to disorganized to justify it. Also, I just downloaded that font… I need more dingbats in my life. Don’t take that phrase out of context.. geesh. 🙂

    1. Glad my label-loving confession didn’t scare you off completely, Laura! Or the fact that I own a label-maker. That’s not something you just declare to the world wide web everyday. 😉 And I lol’d at your comment about needing more dingbats in your life. You and me both, sister! Ha ha. Glad you snagged the free download, too.

  12. thats so cute, she got an A+ for attitude! love it- that is cool y’all got to collaborate. Also those are great labels – I too love labeling everything- I would label my kids if they wouldn’t peel the stickies off!

    1. Okay, just imagining your two precious kids with labels across their foreheads is almost too much to bear. Ha ha. You’re so right, though; I can’t imagine that the stickies would last for more than a few seconds with all of the energy they’ve got!

  13. These labels would even dress up my old plastic rubbermaid-type containers, wouldn’t they? And now you have me thinking about how cute my spice jars would be all dressed up like that. Ahhhh, if only I had a cameo. One day maybe! Until then, I’ll store away all your inspirations for the future. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Oooo, I’m loving the spice jars idea. In fact, it’s on my to do list to get our spices out of the plastic containers they come in into some matching glass jars. Thanks for the re-inspiration with that project! And I’ll keep sharing ideas and you can let the inspiration ruminate until it overflows into creation…whether it be with a Cameo, an x-acto knife, or something completely different.

  14. How fun to get to meet up and do some fun crafts together! I love the font you used for the label frames on your jars…very cool. I hadn’t seen those before. And I really do need to get some of that frosted vinyl, I’ve liked it on everything I’ve seen it on so far. The t-shirt Jen made is too cute! And yes, I’m a label-lover too. 🙂 Have a great week!

    Debbie

    1. Our craft day was great…it has gotten me thinking about all of the other bloggers with whom I’d love to share a craft day (and YES you’re one of them…oh the things you could teach me where sewing is concerned…or paper crafts!…or diy art…the list goes on!). And I’m delighted to hear that you’re a fan of the frosted vinyl, too. It has definitely become my latest obsession. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but the vinyl is partially transparent and almost has a shimmer to it…it’s really quite lovely. And isn’t Jen’s t-shirt awesome? I love the contrast of the two colors! Hope your week is off to a great start, Debbie.

  15. Oh, Lauren! First it was the chipboard and now the frosted vinyl…you’re killing me and my pocket book. 😀 Lovely project, as usual!

    1. Lol. I know, Vanessa. I’m having a hard time exhibiting restraint myself when it comes to craft supplies myself. You know, while it’s tough to come up with a viable substitute to Silhouette’s frosted vinyl, Beth from Whole New Leaf used a pizza box in lieu of chipboard for the project she shared today…and it came out great! So that’s a resourceful strategy. I imagine cereal boxes would work well, too. Anyway, thanks for the sweet words!

  16. Cute – ‘simple’ – project! (Hahhhh! Easy for You to say!!) ;-} Thanks for the Font info – there are several reasons I see that it will be useful for – like I need another Font!! Thanks also for the Tutorial info! I’ll try it sometime – ;-}

    1. I know…my font collection is ever-growing, too. It’s hard to exhibit restraint when there are so many amazing freebies out there! Glad you enjoyed this project, Lynden. You’re so supportive!

  17. Hi Lauren,
I am also the eldest and a perfectionist too so I know where you are coming from.
I want to address the fact that you mentioned once you place the label on the glass it is there to stick forever. Well, I have a little trick I learned that I want to share with you, having been in the sign business and working with these types of materials If you mist both the back of the label (sticky side) and also the media to which you are attaching the label to, then slide it around to position it where you want it to be and then squeegee the label, wipe off the excess water with a towel and it will dry where you have placed it. Also, if you add a little liquid dish soap to the water in the misting bottle, it helps it slide a little easier too. It may take a little practice but it does work.
    Thanks for the download too!!
    Karen

    1. You and your vinyl knowledge never ceases to amaze me. How crazy cool is that you can mist it with water (and soap!) to help with placement? Question: when you say “squeegee the label, is that once it has been applied? And how does the water not break down the adhesive on the back of the vinyl? I’m so intrigued…and very tempted to find some glass that I can test this out on. This makes it gem #256 shared by Karen Lewis, ladies and gentlemen. (Thank you!)

    1. I know, Darcel. “The possibilities are endless” really couldn’t be more true. I try not to get overwhelmed by the wealth of ideas I have swimming around in my head for what to do next with my Cameo and just take it one project at a time! Ha ha, and I like that: “picmonkey for the crafter.” Great simile!

  18. My mom had these glass jars one with whole weat flour in it and the other with pancake mix. I was baking cookies, yep, exactly what you are thinking happened; I mixed the two up. What is worse is it made a GIANT mess of the oven! …if only she has these super adorable labels on them! Personally, I love to label things/ I mean who doesn’t, right? Labeling is right up there with making calenders and lists. Ah, what fun.
    – Dusty.

    1. Oh no! So you ended up with pancake cookies? Don’t worry; I know I would have been lost in that same situation. And you’re so right about labeling being second cousins with calendars and lists. They all bring some semblance of method to the madness that swims around in our brains! 🙂

  19. I reallllllly want a Silhouette! I have an old Cricut that has seen better days and I feel like it’s the equivalent of VHS in the world of Blue Ray! I am so adding this to my Christmas wishlist! lol

    1. Lol. Your comparison is too funny; I haven’t worked with a Cricut before, but I’ve heard similar rumblings from others that there’s just no comparison, especially since with a Silhouette, you don’t have expensive cartridges to deal with. I hope that your Christmas wish comes true, Mish! (It’s never too early to start wishing, I say.)

  20. Oh, hello Jen! 😉
I’m following her bog already since a few months, how funny to see you both together now!

And for all the things with you Silhouette… I don’t need to say a thing anymore, or?
    Envy!
But, hey! I am planning to buy one of this little label makers. One that can make this retro labels, like you used in your graphic, this black & white, kinda 3D-labels… love those!

    Love, Midsommarflicka

    1. How fun that you’re already following Jen! I have to say, I love leaving comments on other blogs and seeing your sweet words a few comments above mine. It makes this big bloggy world feel a little more intimate. And how delightful that you’re keen on the retro label makers! As you saw from my graphic, I just love the look of the font…. Out of curiosity, where do you think you’ll be able to find one? eBay?

      1. Oh yes, it’s great if you meet the same persons on different blogs. Then it’s a small nice world and not this scary world wide web! 🙂

You can find those label makers en etsy! Or even on amazon…
Just look for “OH MY Motex”. Like here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/OHMYBUY – They have some different, with different fonts and a lot of tapes, even in neon 🙂

        1. Wow…I’m just loving those neon tapes…great, now there’s another crafty tool I desperately NEED. Lol.

  21. I love these Lauren! And I think I must have some of that Label fever too coz these just make me want to label everything! I have always loved the Martha Stewart ideas for organization … not usually able to pull it off, but it is inspiring! Thanks for sharing, can’t wait to see them in real life!

    1. “Label fever”…ha ha. I love it! I probably was subconsciously influenced by your pantry jars, which are so gorgeously labeled (with black vinyl I do believe?). And Mom, you’ve always impressed me with your labeling skills! I smile to see your lovely handwriting labeling some of Mark’s old files…. Thank you for that!

  22. Love the labels! We labeled our cookie jar with “my stache”, complete with a mustache using frosted glass spray paint! Although, it looks like the process with the Silhouette is much easier!

Crafting is 10000x better when you have someone to work alongside, looks like you two had a blast! 🙂

    1. Lol! “My stache.” That is awesome! And I’ve never used frosted glass spraypaint before, but I’m sure it looks just stache-tastic. And yes, Jen and I did have fun! In a way, you have a crafting buddy at all times now…in your sweet pup! I’m sure he’s a great companion.

    1. Aw, I don’t know about perfect, but I’m glad you approve of them, Tori! And yes, we did really enjoy ourselves…lots of smiles were had!

  23. I’m officially drooling, Lauren. As if I didn’t already want a Silhouette enough, you have now spoken my language of love…labels. Ahhh. These labels are beautiful! I also look forward to seeing what gets mustache-ified in your home. And don’t be knocking people who label their tax forms. You should see my file cabinet, not a handwritten note in sight; just a plethora of perfect labels. (Ok, reading that back makes me sound a little sick, but a girl’s gotta be organized somewhere!). I’m with you on avoiding the cooking mishaps through labeling too. I once grabbed the peppermint extract bottle which closely resembled my vanilla and added it to our pancakes. Didn’t even realize until I smelled way too much mint on the griddle. The kids still talk about how great those mint pancakes were (gag).

Glad you got to spend time creating with a fellow crafter and blogger. Looks like it was a blast! Hopefully that will be me one day!

    1. Okay, first of all, I don’t know how you do it, but I LITERALLY laugh out loud every time I read your comments…and this one was no exception. Maybe because I’ve heard your voice on the phone, I just hear your inflection and expression in your written word all the more, and dang girl, you are FUNNY. “The kids still talk about how great those mint pancakes were (gag).” Still makes me laugh just to re-type it! Ah me….

Second, I need you to come and help me with my file cabinet because it is a hodge podge of labeled files and handwritten files, manila and colored folders, and needs a major purge-fest. We did tackle one drawer, however, and you’ll see why on my post next Monday…but the other two are out of control. Teach me your ways!

And Jessica, you can bet your bottom dollar that we’re going to have a craft day of our own someday. I know it! I just know it!

      1. I am oh so happy I could make you laugh, my friend. For you make me laugh every single time I read your posts and comments and chat with you. What a joy to have a friend with the same quirky sense of humor.

I would gladly help you with your file cabinet. Mine looks good now except for the huge box of documents left to shred. I’ve been thinking about just handing it over to the kids. They could probably destroy it faster than I could shred each page!

Ooo, you have me intrigued. I look forward to next Monday!

        1. Quirky is the right word for it, that’s for sure! 🙂 So glad to have found a friend who appreciates my quirks…and can dish ’em out, too! And I’m lol’ing to imagine your kids shredding up a storm with that stack of paper you have. I’ve got a “to burn” pile (kindling for our firepit). They’d be welcome to have a go at that, too, if they wanted! Though, maybe it’d be best to avoid the pyrotechnics for now. 🙂

    1. Kimberly, thanks for sharing your amazing creation with us all! It was so much fun to be fiddling around in dafonts and to discover your amazing handiwork. You definitely made this project 10x easier…. And I’m sure there will be many more Kimberly-Geswein-inspired projects to come!

  24. I love those labels! It makes me want to go out and buy some glass jars for my flour and sugar…so I can label them! 🙂 And how fun that you got to have some craft time with a friend!!! I did some of that myself this weekend as well. Although, it turned into more of a social time than craft time, but we did get in a trip to Hobby Lobby.

    1. Ha ha! Glad that you love them! Those glass jars were from our Crate & Barrel wedding registry…but I’m sure you could find them elsewhere for even cheaper. And I know what you mean about turning craft time into social time. We definitely did our fair share of talking and kept having to refocus ourselves so that we would have something to show for our time! 😉 Btw, I’m still thinking about your amazing hoop art. And I didn’t mention this on your blog, but I’ve been hoarding hoops from thrift stores like it’s my job…so, it’s high time I put them to use! Thanks so much for the inspiration.
