Color-Blocked Bobby Pins at “Or So She Says”

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  We enjoyed a game night with our small group, a birthday party for my niece Clara, and a breezy bike ride around Orlando.  The rains finally gave way to some gorgeous weather, which meant I got to rock some brightly-colored spring clothes and my newest d.i.y. creation, color-blocked bobby pins!

Color-Blocked Bobby Pin Tutorial | The Thinking Closet

My bobby pins went from plain-and-simple to bright-n-bold…just the way I like it…and all in the matter of a few short steps.  In fact, I think this may be the easiest tutorial I’ve ever shared!

I’d love it for you to pop on by Or So She Says to check out the full tutorial.  Hey, you might even get some ideas for birthday gifts or Mother’s Day gifts….

  1. I just popped over from Or So She Says… to tell you that I LOVE these! So cute and simple, and it makes a great statement in your hair! Love the idea to use it as a gift too! Thanks so much for sharing your brilliance, Lauren! Have a great week!

    ~Abby =)

    1. Aw, thanks dear Abby! I so appreciate you coming by here to let me know you enjoyed it. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure how it would go over…if people would think me crazy to devoting a whole tutorial to bobby pins I painted with nail polish. It almost seems too simple! But I really fell in love with them myself, and I’m delighted to hear that you did, too. Thanks for your kindness and support, Abby.

  2. too fun Lauren! I’m passing this onto my daughter, she’s always doing something funky with her hair and her boring black bobby pins! 🙂

    1. I’m glad this might be of use to your daughter, Maria! Thanks for passing it along! And for hosting just a fabulous party week after week.

  3. What an adorable tutorial! (Guys, I made a rhyme!!!) Anyways, so cute! And, I great gift idea indeed.

Ooo, a bike ride. That sounds adventurous and fun. I think I will go on a bike ride, or more likely a lonboard ride. You’ve inspiered me, per the usual. 🙂

    – Dusty.

    1. You’re a poet and you didn’t even realize it! (Lol.)

You have a longboard? And you know how to ride it without falling off and dying? Dusty, you just keep getting cooler and cooler.

    1. Happy to hear you’ve had such beautiful weather lately…you earned it after that long, cold winter! I remember how different life was when we were living up north in Ohio…and you’re even MORE north of that. I know this spring was a long time coming. Soak it up!

  4. Super cute idea! Might have to give these a shot – maybe I won’t lose them as easily! I did something similar to my keys so I could tell them apart from one another!

    1. Ah yes, I’ve seen the color-coded key idea on Pinterest before…not sure why I haven’t done it yet! Thanks for the reminder, Audra!

    1. I try to have the maximum amount of fun allowable by law…especially where crafting is concerned! 😉 And I know you have fun whipping up all of those yummy dishes you create. I can just tell from the passionate way you write about them!

    1. YAY! I know you’ll rock the socks off of these hair accessories, Jay, as you are a Fashion Queen in my book. Sooooo wonderful to catch up with you tonight, friend. Exciting things ahead….

    1. Oh, yes, I feel like Cyndi Lauper circa 1987 would have rocked these bobbys with pride. I suppose it’s inevitable that being a child of the 80s would have an influence on my crafting! 😉

    1. I’ve always been a bright color gal myself! After I graduated from college, I painted my bedroom in my parents’ house bright red. (I was inspired by the movie Amelie.) Love it when splashes of color show up in unexpected places, too…like in locks of hair! Thanks for stopping by, Brianna, and for your sweet comment.

  5. Lauren, it sounds like a wonderful weekend! Glad you got some fun and relaxing time with loved ones. Your bobby pins are adorable! I’ve always been smitten with cute hair accessories; however, I lack the necessary skills to arrange them in my hair in a way that is presentable and befitting a 30-something woman. Perhaps your next tutorial could be on appropriate use of cute accessories!

Thanks for sharing your bit of spring cheer with us in your hair. I’ll be popping over to see the full post.

    1. Yay! Glad that you’re keen on these lil bobby pins and cute hair accessories in general (as am I). You know, Jessica, I’d totally be game to take on your tutorial suggestion except for the fact that the two photos of the bobby pins in my hair are about as “fancy” as I get with styling. Lol. But maybe that will be a good challenge for me! I have wanted to do a round-up of hair styling ideas for women with thick hair of which I am one…and so often, I feel at a loss for how to style my heavy locks. (I probably had 100 bobby pins holding together my up-do on my wedding day.) And I have sometimes felt like hair clips and bobby pins are more youthful and perhaps less typical of a 30-year-old woman, but then again, that might not be such a bad thing! 😉

  6. How fun is that!? The possibilities are endless. You are a genius! I am so going to bedazzle all my bobby pins! (Maybe that will also make them easier to find 😉

    1. Oooo! Now I’m wishing I had named this project “Bedazzled Bobby Pin Tutorial!” I suppose I’ll just email you next time I need a clever title, Robyn. 😉 The fact that you of all people approve of this project makes me oh so happy; and you’re so right about painting them making it easier to find them. Bobby pins do seem to be experts at the disappearing act!

    1. You did?! How fun. The metal ones or the plastic ones? I remember oh so many cute hair accessories from my youth…and now, the cuteness extends into my adulthood. That’s the way it should be, right?
