Glitter House Number Pumpkin: Fall-ify Florida Part II

First things first: To my friends and family in the north east, know that I’m praying hardcore for all impacted by Hurricane Sandy – – for peace and restoration, especially for Ocean Grove, N.J.

With just one more day until Halloween, I thought I’d glam up our pumpkin with some metallic spray paint and a glitter house number.  This is the chilliest it has been in Florida since we moved this July; it actually feels like fall!

Bling bling action with metallic spray paint and glitter.

This was really quite easy, and I was able to use supplies I already had – – always a plus!  Here’s a quick tutorial on how to glam up your own pumpkin.

SUPPLIES:

  • A pumpkin!  I used a real one, but a decorative one would be great to be able to re-use year after year.
  • Metallic spray paint.  I used Krylon satin metallic paint in nickel.
  • Glitter in your color of choice!  Gold was what I had, but orange would be really nice, too!
  • X-acto knife.
  • Elmer’s Glue.
  • Dry paint brush.

Step 1: Spray paint your pumpkin!

2.  Print out an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with your house number, word, monogram, symbol…whatevs!  I decided to put our house number on the pumpkin.  I created our mock-up in Microsoft Word using a free font I had found a while back, Dobkin Script.

What sold me on the font was the swoosh in the 3!

3.  Trace your text onto the pumpkin.  I secured the paper to the pumpkin using a rubber-band, centering the sheet where I wanted it.  Then, I used an x-acto knife to trace the numbers, which transferred a faint outline onto the pumpkin.  If you’re using a real pumpkin, some of the juices might ooze out (ew!).  [This is the closest I have ever gotten or ever want to get to doing surgery.]

4.  Use Elmer’s Glue to fill in between the lines.  This was the most tedious part; I found that having a paper-towel on hand to clean up any glue outside the lines really helped.

5.  Sprinkle your glitter onto the glue.  I recommend doing this after you finish each number so the glue doesn’t dry; also, glitter gets EVERYWHERE so doing it outside is best.  I used a dry paintbrush to remove any excess glitter.

And you’re done!  Your glitz n’ glam pumpkin is ready to wow passersby from your front porch, back deck, dining room table…wherever it finds a home!

To close, here’s a favorite Tolkein quote I recalled while working with glitter.  It strikes me somewhere deep.

  2. Beautiful, glittery pumpkin and loved the clear tutorial, and of course the Tolkien quote.
We still have two pumpkins (uncarved) from Halloween that I could decorate!!

    1. That spray paint was purchased for another project that I never completed, so it was what I had on hand – – but I liked working in metallics.

And I know…that Tolkein with his killer writing…gets me every time.

    1. Hmmm…that’s a good question! In retrospect, I probably should have used a decorative pumpkin…but Mark brought this one home and it was just begging for some glam. 😉 We’ll see how long it lasts!

  3. very very pretty! One year, after Halloween was over, my pumpkins were still in very good shape so I spray painted them gold and kept them in the front garden through out Christmas….drove my husband crazy! 🙂 Happy Halloween
