Lil Journal Project: Week 2

Week 2 in the Lil Journal Project was a walk down memory lane.  Here are my first three entries to share for inspiration and with my link-up friends at Lil Blue Boo.

Day 6 started off with creating a map of my childhood neighborhood.  (This was the home where I grew up until age seven – – the home of the original thinking closet.)  I used my memory for the layout, googlemaps for the surrounding street names, and my parents to fill in the blanks on our neighbors in the apartment building across the street.  I even drew my sister and I on bicycles, since that’s the means by which I most remember exploring our neighborhood.  We always had bounds set like, “You can ride to white car,” or “You can ride to the end of the short block.”  And then there was that one epic time before we moved when I was allowed to ride around the whole block by myself.  It might as well have been around the whole world, I felt so free.

Map of my childhood neighborhood; four blocks that made up my world.
The four blocks that made up my world.

Day 7 involved a chart of “my life in cars.”  My first car holds the most memories!  Same for you?

Chart of the cars that make up my life; 1983 Ford Crown Victoria.
My first car was a boat named Vicky. We shared the same birth year.

Day 8, I took a journey into the land of paints.  Since my paints are one of the few items still M.I.A. from the move, I used a new set of acrylics to mix up all sorts of colors and give them names, just for the heck of it.  Some of my favorite invented paint names: flower girl, Spanish moss, lake bottom, Hello Kitty pink, flashlight tag.

Original color palette with new names just for fun.
It was fun to get a taste for what the job of a paint namer is like! Pretty sweet gig, if you ask me.

It’s not too late to join in on the Lil Journal Project if you haven’t already!  Ashley’s daily prompts never fail to get my pen moving and my mind reeling with ideas.  I haven’t gotten “lost” in journaling like this for a long time.  The key has been that it’s not just writing, but a lot of drawing, doodling, mapping, painting….

Mixin’ it up is good for the brain, I’ve decided.

  1. I’m sad that I lack a lot of details from 100 Inwood. I do remember days of hanging outside in the yard with Lauren. Also, I have a distinct memory of running from Mom in the kitchen because I didn’t want her to brush my tangled hair. And I remember where Dad kept the “Raisinets” in the hoosier, and that he would give us some as a little treat. It’s fun to dust off the ol’ cobwebs, though, and hear what you all remember! 🙂

  2. Lauren, this brought back SO many memories! Thanks for participating in this project and blessing your whole family as a result. Oh, the smells from Cassone’s bakery…and the adventures of riding into independence!! I do love the names of your paint colors and all your drawings!

    1. Thanks, Mama. Thanks for filling in some of the blanks for me. It’s fun to remember together! Sometime, I’d love to see YOUR version of the Inwood Avenue neighborhood map. I’m sure you’d remember different things!

      1. Do you remember the grape vine in the back yard, Laur? And we had a huge pear tree, too, that I would climb to get the pears, though I think it just up and died in the middle of one fruit-bearing season. Had to chop it down and plant a new baby pear tree. I don’t think we had an Accord. We had a huge green Buick (a precursor to our Crown Vics) though.

        Your Dad

        1. I do remember a pear tree! Was that in the front yard or back? That must be why you planted one at our house on Melbourne. The Accord is Mark’s current car. I don’t remember the Buick, but a big brown car?

          1. Pear tree was in back yard even with the back door stoop kinda close to the hedge and sidewalk.
Grape vine was between outdoor fireplace and back door.
Do you remember that around the house and in the front yard were 4 or 5 dogwood trees?

          2. I love all of the flora you recall. I mostly remember the raspberry and mint bushes that Mom would send us out to pick with that little tin bucket. I do remember Easter photos in front of the dogwoods, though. Thanks for dusting off that part of my brain, Dad.

  3. Love that you mixed up your own colors for the Palette page and made up creative names. I found you on Lil Blue Boo link. I’m having a great time seeing everyone’s journal pages. Please come over and check out mine, I usually post them on Journal Tuesdays. Suzy

  4. I love your journal pages! It is so much fun to see everyone’s different styles. I had a big smile on my face as I read about your bike riding boundaries. My sister and I had to follow the same kinds of rules! And, yes, I remember that first trip ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BLOCK. Total bliss…

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Janice! I agree about the fun of seeing so many different results from one prompt. Beauty in diversity! Glad to hear I wasn’t alone in my bike riding boundaries. 🙂
